Inspired of sorts by the Reilly interview thread, I figured it would be neat? fun?  interesting? to detail the fibs the Boys have officially accumulated over the years.  The purpose is neither to condemn nor exonerate either Jack or the band.  It's just to look back at the things we told by the band and found proof later that proved otherwise; be they exaggerations, white lies, fibs, or out right whoppers.

- "I burned the tapes."
- Al left to go to dentistry school
- Al rejoined to replace David
- "Never Learn Not To Love" (words & music by Dennis Wilson)
- "Smile was nothing more than a bunch of little fragments."
- "Smile will be out this year."
- "Warmth Of The Sun"/JFK connection

I'm sure I'll think of more later, just as I'm sure there are some doozies I'm forgetting.  And please stay on topic.  Just post the ones you remember or comment on those listed.  Let's not turn this into a debate over moralities, etc.

What's the lie about Warmth Of The Sun? I've heard the story that it was written the night after JFK's assassination. That's not true?

Yeah, I don't think that one's a lie.

BB urban legend held it that it was written the night before. Fed Vail for one begs to differ.

Also, there's a subtle difference between flat out lies - "I burned the "Fire" tapes" or "NLNTL" was written entirely by Dennis - and BBUL ("Sloop" was included on Pet Sounds at Capitol's insistence, or Alan left to go to dentistry school).

True but I thought the dentistry thing was in the Murry approved (or penned?) bios that started the whole "Dave replaced Al who replaced Dave" thing.  Not so?

Fair point. The truly amusing thing is that it took close on 40 years for someone to think of doing the screamingly obvious thing - contacting Ferris U. to ask them about Alan's dates there.  Grin

As for the JFK thing, like I said, your can draw your own conclusions but personally, I think it's just a little too romantic of a story with too many discrepancies.  I mean none of the guys who most claim it to be true agree where it happened.  Vail's story is obviously the most possible (considering that's where the band was at the time!) but regardless of their whereabouts, there's still only his word that Brian and Mike wrote it in the hotel room.

Why Fred would lie?  For the same reason as Brian and Mike:  It makes a really nice story! Cheesy

Brian: Smile will NEVER come out! (of course he probably meant it at the time)

Dennis: Brian is the Beach Boys, we are his f**King messangers. (Didn't he say this in 68 or 69? By then the whole band was involved and Brian did hardly anything on 20/20.)

Murray: I helped you boys because you asked for it. You said help us dad! Make us famous! (oh wait that was just a bio movie)

I don't think it's really lying when a person truly believes what they're saying.  They could be absolutely wrong but that doesn't have anything to do with honesty.

A fresh one: in the Jack Reilly interview (see recent thread) he claims the 71 Surfs Up tag is Brian, Carl Dennis and himself.  Now it might just be me but I hear Al and Mike all over that …

Except that Fred wouldn't lie. He's like Boyd - his integrity is unquestionable.
