Here's a game. Go to your record/CD shelf, or your iTunes library, etc. Organize everything in alphabetical order if it's not already.

I'll start it off. I'm going to pick at random, one artist. The game then is for everyone to reply with the next 5 artists that sit on their shelf after that artist. Physical shelves tend to be alphabetized by last name, whereas iTunes uses first name (unless you manually change the "sort artist"); for the purpose of this game, who cares, either way is fine. The only rule is you can't lie.

For example, say someone had picked the Byrds. I would reply with:

Cale Parks
Califone
The Call
Camera Obscura
Can

What the rules are after that I don't know. Maybe we could say after 10 people reply, then the next person is allowed to pick another artist at random and "reboot" the game? Let's see how it goes, and how many replies we actually get.

So yeah, I'm kicking it off - the artist is The Byrds.

Next to Gandalf:
Gang Gang Dance
Gang of Four (a favorite)
Gary B & The Notions (fantastic local Bawlmer band that I know)
Gary Glitter (because I don't go to American sports stadiums often enough so I need my fix)
Gary Numan (I see I share this with someone else - I need to get more!)

Next to Muse:
Music Go Music (forgot this existed, but was a nice disco-y stomper along the lines of the MGMT/Friendly Fires clones of 3-4 years ago)
The Muslims (now known as The Soft Pack - check out Soft Pack's cover of Spacemen 3's Walking With Jesus - raw, driving, journal entry for one of those life-happening moments that you glad you entered in your journal cos you don't think it ever happened)
My Bloody Valentine (one of my top 5 favorites in my whole collection!!!! Saw the 14-minute sonic boom jet plane suicide assault of "You Made Me Realise" twice back in 1991))
My Dear Disco (small Michigan-based outfit I met when opening for a friend's band who are amazing electro-glam-funk whatever you would call it, monstrous dance energy blast!)
My Morning Jacket (I often say to myself I should listen to these guys more)

Oh, and I have another request for this game, not a rule, but a request:
I encourage anyone: if you list an artist that may not be widely known or easily Wikipediable, just provide a little comment like I did above. Or any type of editorial comment you may want to make - would be fun to read!

So I see the Gaslight Anthem sits on multiple shelves. I've heard that name here there and everywhere... looked them up... they say they're heavily influenced by The Replacements... hmmm...

George Jones: my favorite voice of all time. Jimmie Dale Gilmore #2.

My Chemical Romance ('Desolation Row' from Bob Dylan's recent cover comp - LOVE this version)
Nada Surf (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7rGr5lWv6DQ - 'nuff said.)
Nancy Sinatra (Boots)
Narkotiki (Have NO idea where this came from. First time listening to it was just now trying to figure out what it was...it's like Indian electronic stuff, doesn't sound too good).
Nat King Cole (Christmas music - listening to it now....and now I'm depressed because I miss the holiday season)

My Bloody Valentine
The Naked and Famous
The National
Negative Approach
Neil Finn

BTW, I definitely recommend checking out The Gaslight Anthem.  They're more of the Replacements meet Bruce Springsteen.  There new release "Handwritten" is absolutely amazing.
