as far as album cover art goes..It's such a hard one to choose..I love the  Smile Millenium Edition it blends the two....well f*** it I'll go with Smile Shop..has to be one of the best covers ever produced plus I've seen so many different versions of it which is very interesting...which album art do you prefer Smile or Smiley Smile?

The Smile artwork is my all time favourite album cover. It so brilliantly complements the music. In its use of primary colours it reminds me of the most effective toy packaging - Playmobil, Lego, Mario, and it evokes a similar childlike excitement and joy in me every time I see it.

Smile is Brian trying to create the most wonderful escapist, Disneyland, toy music as far as I can tell and the artwork and music is inextricably linked in my own mind.

The Smiley artwork is great but ultimately a Rousseau rip off and not nearly as bold, unique and inspired as Holmes' illustration.

Both are great covers in their own right - SMiLE is brilliant in its use of colours and general playful/happiness. Smiley Smile's cover is straight-on funky/psychedelic. And green is my favourite colour, anyway.  Smiley

@Newguy: maybe slightly alter the thread title to indicate that this is about the album cover art, not the music itself. We already have plenty of "SMiLE vs. Smiley Smile" threads.  Smiley

wow you took the words from my thoughts..because i always felt like it has a cartoonish feel to it sorta like playdough/lego Smiley the cover art is absolutely iconic in so many ways..
ok what do you prefer the 1967 version of the cover art or 2011? i prefer 2011 :D the wood in the smile shop looks so fine ..the coloring really makes it look like wood..every room inside of that store is a track from smile isn't that magical?

SMiLE for me. I love the cheerful 60s vibe. The font is cool and I like the storefront scenario. Smiley Smile as a cover excellently portrays what's inside - a dark, stoned half hour of....well, something. I guess maybe the music colours my influence too, because I dig SMiLE much more than Smiley Smile.

Tough call. But I'd say Smiley Smile. It's a pleasant cover to look at and perfectly captures the 'soul' of the music within. And like I said - I have this thing about green.  3D

The creator of the Smiley Smile art is unknown (to me). I tried to look him/her up, but didn't find anything. Some art department employee of Capitol Records, I suppose. Frank Holmes didn't have anything to do with this one, as far as I know.

By the way: another thread on the SS cover art.

see there are many different smile covers lol...it's hard for me to choose..smiley smile doesn't look dark but very mysterious like you want to find out what's in the busy jungle and that small house deep in it..
smile makes you feel welcomed and smiley makes you feel like you are prohibited to step inside lol

I like both cover arts but if you insist I shall go with Smile, because it has positivity, it's bright (btw, my fave colors are orange & yellow), also there's something whimsical, maybe due to those smiling teeth used as some ornaments. I'm fond of the kiddie style of drawing, shop assistants are cute.
Yes they look extra friendly I'd walk into their store and purchase a nice pair of dentures as a souvenir lol jk
Yes it has a warm welcoming feeling to it..even if it does have scary songs on it like "Fire"..

That was very humorous, about dentures as a souvenir.
And what's so scary about Fire track? I don't see it. I find this instrumental jolly entertaining, every time I hear this I want to smile (pun intended). Definitely one of my favorites on the record. That's it.
idk why but that song always scared me :/don't get me wrong i absolutely love that and every song on smile but the only song that i find scarier than that "Fall Breaks and Back to Winter"..it has a dark feel to it but it's one of the greatest compositions brian has even created..it's amazing that he created this in his mind and brought it to real life...it's magical seriously
check these out..i had a problem with the songs without the vocals so i had to have these replace the originials on my smile on my ipod

I've never cared for the Smiley cover.  It reminds me that I need to go out and work in my yard! And not in a fun way!  We're talking pretty overgrown here.  Weeds, tall grass, blackberry bushes taking over.

The SMiLE cover is very bright and welcoming.  It makes me think, hey I wonder what kind of novelty items they got in there?  I love novelty shops.  My kids and I always browse thru the one at our local mall and laugh our @sses off!

Smiley Smile - great cover! Along with Holland, it's there best non-group photo album cover (the best group photo album cover being Stack O'Tracks).

Smile because it has such a happy vibe to the cover. I can imagine if it had been released and people feeling very thrown off by it  LOL

Agree on the cover art, but the title?  Not a lot of creativity there.  "Where are we?"  "Holland."  "Ok, well there's the album title....."  Roll Eyes

While I like Holland's cover, the best for me is All Summer Long's photos. The worst is either Surf's Up or KTSA, never understood what's so cool about these 2 album covers. The former is boring and the latter has a very bad drawing of The BBs imo. As for the best title the winner is "Surfin' USA".

I love the name Holland too. But it's definitely not my most favorite European country name. My fave is Denmark, sounds groovy. But overall, I adore the name "United States of America"!
I like Surf's Up cover because it's very dark and evil looking but it doesn't go with the beach boys at all imo..I never liked that album and never seen the big deal with it..I don't think I ever will and I accept that..
ALL SUMMER LONG has a cool ass cover it looks like they are having fun and it sums up the beach boys for me...so does today and summer days and summer nights..Denmark does sound cool but also sound like a jock's name lol
Netherlands and Amsterdam sounds cool to me Smiley

Amsterdam not only sounds cool, it is cool. Fantastic place to visit! (although as all the things that are great about it - dark, mysterious, slightly druggy, open-minded, adventerous, bit cheesy - are also all the things that are great about the Surf's Up album - and as you don't like the Surf's Up album - maybe it's for the best you don't visit there after all...  Smiley)

My favorite BB cover art is Keepin' The Summer Alive. There, I said it. Whew.
I'll agree with you on Surf's Up, though.

There are some pretty great covers:

Surfin' USA
Little Deuce Coupe
All Summer Long
SMiLE
Wild Honey
Friends
Sunflower
Surf's Up
Holland
POB
BW 88

However, the only ones I really can't stand are KTSA, GIOMH and LBWL - oh, and Knebworth...
