Finally !!
The first performer to sell out the Madison Square Garden 4 shows in a row.

The original '72 album (evening of June 10th) and the afternoon show released in '97 will be remixed by Michael Brauer and a DVD is included, including the historic MSG press conference, plus, for the first time ever, live performance material from the show

To sum it up, they blew it, they blew it consistently, they continue to blow it, it is tragic and this pathological problem caused The Beach Boys' greatest music to be so underrated by the general public.

Oh wow...this looks f***ING AMAZING!

It does !

Rumour has it that Jonas Mekas' 16mm recordings might be the footage used for the DVD. Here's a pic:

On the other hand, maybe they'll use NBC's footage that was filmed (see the link in my post above)

Michael Brauer tweeted this:

The last weeks have been very great for Elvis fans. The Sun Records box "A boy from Tupelo" was announced to be released on August 16th and then all of a sudden a previously unreleased live recording from '55 of Elvis singing "I forgot to remember to forget" - of which no live recording was available before - turned up in a collector's posession. It was performed on the Lousiana Hayride and has great quality. Someone made a wire recording of it back in '55 and that's what you hear. Too bad it won't be on "A boy from Tupelo"

Unfortunately I couldn't find it in better quality:

The tracklist for the "A boy from Tupelo"-Sun Records-Boxset has been revealed. Should I start another thread or change the title of this one and keep it all in here?

Keep it all in here.  Smiley

For somebody who has the Complete 50's Masters - is there any worthwhile new stuff on the new Tupelo set?

YES !
"Elvis at Sun" from a few years ago set new standards for these recordings. Kevan Budd's remastering of the masters is unbelievable and made them sound like they came directly from newly pressed original Sun record. You mostly can't compare the older CDs to this. And the boxset will feature those plus lots of outtakes, etc. Unfortunately - like I mentioned in an earlier post - not the newly discovered live version of "I forgot to remember to forget" which wasn't known to exist until a few weeks ago. But a song never heard sung by Elvis before will be featured in a live setting "Little mama".
The main focus of the boxset though is the book which should feature all the information that can be found for this periode. it took Ernst Jorgensen years to finish it. You can find more information if you click on the link from my second post in this thread.
Here's the tracklisting :

Wow... okay, thanks for the info. I only ever heard a few tracks off At Sun. Maybe I should get it..

Regarding biographical facts - the 2-volume Guralnick biography is my bible concerning all things Elvis. Even if there's some new stuff in the Tupelo book I don't know if it's worth it..

What's the price tag on Boy from Tupelo, anyway?

Don't know yet. But since it's on FTD I guess it's not that cheap  Sad

Information about the Sun years is quite sparse. In terms of that era it should be a revelation.

This is all great stuff, but for me not a single subsequent reissue has surpassed THE SUN COLLECTION (1975 U.K) or THE SUN SESSIONS (1976 U.S. version). Both comps provided the essence of it all with 16 tracks. The 2 disc SUNRISE (1999) is highly worthwhile as well.  The 1987 version had weird sound and way too many alternate takes of "I'm Left, You're Right, She's Gone."

For me, the later SUN comps are to the '76 edition what the 1990 Robert Johnson box is to the original KING OF THE DELTA BLUES SINGERS albums: More academic detail latter day but the original configurations were somehow more essential - and better listens.

Nothing comes close to the sound of "Elvis at Sun". That one is really astonishing.
"Sunrise" is cool because of the bonus tracks (Elvis At Sun only uses the masters plus "When it rains it pours") and the nice artwork. And I agree about "The Sun Sessions" being a very cohesive collection. I guess many may find them more essential because it was the first time this stuff was collected together. But "A boy from Tupelo" certainly will be the ultimative word for Elvis' time on Sun Records. I don't know if it will be a better listen in terms of the sequence. As you see they use everything they have and we'll get sessions for "Blue moon" for example which probably is nothing one would want to listen to just for fun but for historical reasons. But the sound, as shown with Elvis At Sun, will be better than what was out before

Now if there only would be a way they could include that live version of "I forgot to remember to forget"

I'm looking forward to the MSG reissue. The title, btw, came from a contemporary review of the concert, not the album.  Many reviewers of the day felt the impact of the concerts did not quite translate to the record. I have always enjoyed the live half of MEMPHIS TO VEGAS and ALOHA FROM HAWAII a tad more than the MADISON SQUARE GARDEN album. But again, the shows were highly celebrated and well received in 1972. The album sold well (#11 Billboard) but was hastily edited and rushed.  This reissue gives us a welcome opportunity to revisit that era.

1972 was a good year for the King, professionally anyway. 1971 had seen some relatively soft record sales compared to 1968-70, but 72 brought "Burning Love" (#2 Billboard), the MSG album, and the Grammy winning gospel album HE TOUCHED ME. And to boot, the ALOHA/satellite extravaganza was in the works by that fall.

Judging from the photos, Elvis was still in very good shape. A tad heavier than in 1970 perhaps but hey I have gained 15 pounds in two years time on occasion as well.

Nice to see some love for the King here on the board.  This will surely be an EPIC release.  First time listeners to these recordings will be pleasantly surprised by the amount of kick that these shows have.  Good, good stuff.  I'm buying both editions.  October can't come soon enough for me!

PRO SHOT BEACH BOYS CONCERTS - LIST

To sum it up, they blew it, they blew it consistently, they continue to blow it, it is tragic and this pathological problem caused The Beach Boys' greatest music to be so underrated by the general public.

We all like pictures, don't we ?

I heard a first report of someone who got the "A boy from Tupelo"-set and he says it's fantastic. The sound on "Little Mama" is quite good he says
I believe elvismatters sells it for 99, $ or € I don't know...

a diseased bunch of mo'fos if there ever was one… their beauty is so awesome that listening to them at their best is like being in some vast dream cathedral decorated with a thousand gleaming American pop culture icons.

Yep, Little Mama is incredible. The greatest Elvis find since My Happiness, in my opinion.

Hadn't seen this before. From the Wrecking Crew movie, Billy Strange talking about "A little less conversation". Looove the beginning with Hal playing:

This user posted a video of him unwrapping the "A boy from Tupelo" set and it looks like Sony found a way to include the live "I forgot to remember to forget" after all:

That has nothing to do with Sony, it is just something offered by The Elvis Shop.

Sh!t. I think that would've been a cool thing for Sony to do.
Thanks for clearing up
