I'm sorry for the blurry phone picture, but it's all I have right now.  So last November when TSS was coming out, my local independent record store put out this large 3 feet by 3 feet display of the SMiLE album cover.  It's a styrofoam like square with the album cover on paper on the front of it.  I flipped out over it and asked if they had any plans for it after they were finished displaying it.  They said that if the store didn't want to keep it, that they would sell it to the first person on the list of interested customers.  I just so happened to be the first of what turned out to be 10 people that asked about it.  I had kind of lost hope that I'd get it considering the fact that it's been around 8 months since I first asked about it, but the record store called me on Friday and told me I could pick it up!  As you can see and VERY unfortunately, the display has a crease in the middle of it now.  I was very bummed about that, but I still wasn't about to pass on it.  They sold it to me with a very good discount because of the crease.  I haven't seen another one of these out there, though I'm sure there are some floating around.

I've drawn up some plans to make a frame to go around it and I'll be hanging it up in my music room (my one tiny room in the house that my wife allows me to decorate!) to go along with some Beatles memorabilia.  It's going to get it's own wall since as you can see in the picture, this thing is pretty big.  It's taller than my kitchen table!  I'm cery excited to have scored this thing, even with the crease in it.

Really nice man! Sucks that it's creased, but hell it's still awesome!

That'd look great in any room, let alone your music room.  Nice. Smiley I had a few Star Wars display pieces which I acquired in a similar fashion.  Azn

That's awesome, I don't recall seeing any similar displays around here. Great find! It reminds me of the guy's story in LLVS who did a similar thing at his local record store back in '67 when they had a shop display for the original Smile release.

Put something on top of it to protect it and leave some heavy objects on it (bricks, etc) for a few days to see if it might help reduce the crease a little.  I doubt it can be eliminated, but it could be improved a little before you hang it up.

Great minds think alike!  I am doing that as we speak.  It's going to be a few days before I can start on my frame, so I'm hoping that that process will help.

It's killing me as well, but there isn't anything I can do about it and I'd rather have it in that condition than not have it at all.  I hate it, but it was to cool an item to pass up, especially for $10.

Blimey, those must be hard to come by, especially when you consider how few record stores are left these days!  Very sweet find, I hope you solve the crease! Like you say, better creased than not at all!

One of the local stores I frequent has a bunch of those filling up their storefront windows...they've had the Smile one up since last November.  I've been thinking about asking them what they're going to do with it and if I could buy it.  Then, I'd have to convince my wife to let me put it up somewhere

Yeah, the store I got this at does the same thing.  They always have them out for the recent releases.  I think they always sell them, I've just never been all that interested until the SMiLE cover was put up.  You don't live in east Tennessee, do you?  If so, I may have taken care of that dilemma for you!

LOL!  That's the one!  I live in Clinton just about 15 min. or so north.  Crazy!!  I didn't know that there was anyone else on here even from the state, let alone the same general location.  My Dad and Stepmom live in Powell.

I was actually in the store the day they put the display up and had them put my name on it immediately.  There were several people on the list after me, but the store held there end of the deal up and called me first.

Cool.  I grew up here in Powell and moved back here a couple of years ago.  I know Clinton pretty well, too.  I'm at Disc Exchange a lot, as well as Lost and Found Records, Wild Honey Records (named after the BBs album and they always have cool BBs stuff) and McKays all the time...maybe our paths will cross someday.

Sounds like we hang out in a lot of the same places!  McKays is where I found my very cheap copy of Summer in Paradise a few years ago.  Very cool stuff, man.  I'm not aware of Wild Honey Records though.  Can you PM me their address?  I'd love to check it out sometime.

I figured I'd bump this thread up to show you all the finished product.  I tried to get the crease out of the piece, but didn't have much success.  You can't really see it in this picture or from afar, so I can't complain to much.  I built the frame and stained it.  It isn't anything terribly difficult or flashy, but I think it turned out well.  I'm now proudly displaying it on the wall of my small music room.  I still haven't seen another piece like this one.  Take a look and I'm sorry about the large glare in the top right corner:

Congrats to you, Cosmic! A terrific artifact, even with the crease...which is not all that noticeable in your most recent photo. Way to go!

very nice

I picked up the full size free standing cardboard surfboard from the twofers release some years ago at borders.  same deal.  I asked.  In a few weeks the store manager called me to pick it up.....up until recently I had it in my music room with the little cardboard shelves full of BB cd's.  Removed the shelves and now have it hanging from my garage ceiling.

got the American Band movie poster from a video store many years ago in the same manner..asked and received....

so it never hurts to ask Smiley
