A familiar name just doesn't seem to be too happy about them (see comments at foot of reviews)!

Wasn't the rumor about Mike blocking a bunch of sh*t, particularly Brian Wilson songs, from being released on Made In California basically debunked and said not to be true? As I said elsewhere, who the f*** is gonna be the main songwriter on a Beach Boys box set if not Brian? Makes no sense.

It wasn't really debunked per se, but I did point out that the poster who started this rumor was a guy on the Hoff board named "fifthbeatle" or something. You know, the poster formerly known as "VintageMusic", so I wouldn't put too much credence into what that goofball says. I find it pretty hard to believe that he would be trusted with any confidential information.

There we are, that's what I was thinking of. So yeah, it came from a non-credible source and I'm just restating what you said and have nothing worthwhile to add and only wanted to say I stand semi-corrected and you're all looking at me really funny right now I had this same problem in Indiana with a guy he just wouldn't stop fucking with meiaigj3gjq9-4hw4hawr8gh4h098grhj08QEGh)*a*)

I've been getting deep into Smiley Smile since the new edition came out and just have to say, this is a work of freakin' genius!

The writing.  The singing.  The playing.  The VERY strange weirdness of it all!

I really "get" Smiley Smile now and with all respect to Carl Wilson, this album IS a home run!  Or maybe a bases clearing double!

It really is the first "alternative pop" record.

I am finally starting to understand its internal logic.

It's "alt music" before its time.

No, it's not SMiLe, but...... WOW

It's not just great; it's insanely great!

Lovely and Scary!!!

My Two Cents.

Couldn't agree more. It's a work of art. Done purely on the instincts of the moment, and in pretty bad circumstances, I guess. That made it what it is: great. And your remark on it being alt.music before the term was invented is spot on.

Thanks Don.  I am totally honored that you agree with me.

I have to say that, amazingly, the Smiley Smile album finally FINALLY clicked for me, just a couple of days ago.  Something fell out of the sky and landed on my head.  Honestly, I never had the time of day for this album before.  Now, I'd rank it with Abbey Road, in its own way.  A work of genius.  And just listen to how The Boys sing.  My God!  The vocals work perfectly with the sparse arrangements!

It really makes sense as a total suite of music.
I love how the first half leads to GV, and then we unwind from GV.

And the compositional techniques.  The little percussion effects.  Blowing my freaking mind!

I was not enamored with Smiley Smile when I first heard it with the original mono mix. In fact the mono Smiley version of Windchimes really creeped me out. Then I got a hold of the Sorta Stereo edition and it sounded like a whole other (and better) album to me. The new official stereo version takes things to the next level, I now freakin' love Smiley Smile, weird version of Windchimes and all.

if you wondered about 'Sorta Stereo' its just his way of describing what I think is the unofficial stereo Smiley Smile. Windchimes version on that has hardly any organ and 2-3 different versions of 'whisperin winds' at the end. That stereo Smiley was pretty good, a lot of buried stuff was on it, which is still buried on the new stereo mix.

So hey, "Amusement Parks USA" give anyone else a massive headache? Literally, it gave me a headache with one listen. What's going on with that? Kinda surprised this one turned out like it did, as this feller did a pretty decent job on "Good Vibrations" and "I Get Around".

Some folks think The Beach Boys' music shouldn't be creepy. What is funny about it is that they are then likely to turn around and denounce Mike Love for supposedly "limiting" the band's artistic quotient.

APUSA isn't an extraction mix, if I read my notes right. That's all Marky Mark, man.

Oh yeah, I had gotten mixed up.

Given the strangeness of the mix, I'm guessing the resources for that one are very limited. I'm still not sure what's going on with it, though. Literally headache inducing. The '03 "Shut Down" mix has a very similar problem, but only from the beginning up until Mike's lead on the verse comes in.

Also, Marky Mark's "takes-himself-way-too-seriously" peeved reactions when people call him Marky Mark is lame as hades. Lighten up, toots. Laugh with us.

... I'm talking about Mark Linnett, of course. I called him Marky Mark at a fan convention and he took me aside and said if I ever did that again, I'd swim with the fishes.

... he was referring to a trip to Seaworld, so I called him that one more time and we went to Seaworld and it was cool as f***.

... then he tied my feet to a cinder block and he and all the other engineers and producers of Beach Boys albums threw me into the ocean and I died. Sad

I feel like I've said it way too many times on this board, Amusement Parks stereo remix is hardly stereo. It's all distorted, and the backing track is pretty much locked in mono. The only wide stereo components are the spoken word bits in the middle, and they're buried. I was surprised when a few people had commented they could hear so much more that they couldn't hear in the mono mix.

Well, after purchasing ASL, Today and Smiley Smile last week, I've just gone and bought SDSN, Surfs Up and Little Deuce Coupe. After having my ears totally opened to Smiley Smile and seeing it in a completely different light, I can't wait to hear these three

I was just curious, why did you pick All Summer Long as one of the first 3 purchases? Was it purely for the new stereo mixes of All Summer Long and I Get Around, or are there other improvements on the previous (two-fer) release that I haven't heard about? Really I'm just trying to find reasons to justify my inevitable purchase of it!

I have Party!, Today & Smiley Smile (for the stereo mixes) and I've been really impressed, so Summer Days and Sunflower are on their way (bought Sunflower because I can hear a big improvement in sound quality even on the spotify version)

Oddly enough, the first three I picked up were Smiley Smile, Today!, and All Summer Long, too. I probably would've gotten Summer Days instead of the latter, but they didn't have it in stock. All Summer Long's a great album though, and the stereo extraction mix of "I Get Around" is pretty darn good, surprisingly. It's not the revelation a true stereo mix brings, but it's still a good listening experience. They need to get this kid in on stuff like the alternate "Heroes", "The Little Girl I Once Knew", etc.

Well, my local HMV had all of them at £10ea so went for ASL partly due to IGA but mostly because I just love that album, esp We'll Run Away. There's still the left/right channel splits in Wendy, Little Honda and We'll Run Away which are cool when listening at home but I find a bit weird on the ears when walking!
Today is just my favourite album-I play it more than Pet Sounds -Please Let Me Wonder is mindblowing.
Now, I went for Smiley Smile because of all the fuss made of it on here. There's so many bits I've never heard before and have now just fallen in love with that album.

I was a bit torn between Surfs Up and Sunflower yesterday but LDC and SDSN were no brainers.

Oh, I also have Surfer Girl to open up at Xmas due to a very generous but confused girlfriend as to why I would want 4 copies of the same album on CD and vinyl. They just don't understand!

Definitely get Sunflower. The tape generation is lower than that of any previous release sans the 2009 vinyl (which uses the same source) and the difference is noticeable.

OK, that's enough to persuade me to go back there at lunch! A little OT but I'm going to get the ELO remastered Best Of too

Aegir-I completely agree-as I said, Smiley Smile is a complete revelation. Oh, and the guitar in Do You Wanna Dance? is great
