God, you know what I wish they would release?
The "fast version" WMT found on the Secret Smile boot, I freakin' LOVE it but it is in such horrible, horrible, horrible quality.

Ok.
When my Dad gets back from Japan this Friday, I will be ripping the CDs as FLACs.
I like to share stuff.
I will be your best friend if you actually follow through with it. Which CD's did he pick up?

As said before, if exclusive releases by The Who, a much higher CD-selling classic rock act than The Beach Boys, have appeared in Japan, there is no reason to think these issues will see the light of day here, at least in a physical format.
What was the nature of the releases, though? Was it like this - first time stereo mixes of some of their albums?
The Who Japanese CD's were audiophile products(SHM-CD) including elaborately designed limited edition box sets for the group's first 2 albums("My Generation" & "A Quick One"), plus unique expanded editions of the "Who's Missing" & "Two's Missing" compilations, and a different edition of "Odds & Sods"(it reverts to the original 1974 mix of the album, plus adds bonus tracks, some of them in different mixes to those heard on the 1998 expanded/remixed CD). Some unique mixes appeared on these 2010-2011 Japan CD's & CD box sets, including the unreleased original 1960's mono mixes of the Shel Talmy-produced tracks "Motoring", "Leaving Here","Lubie(Come Back Home)", "Heatwave"(version 1) (all of which had previously been heard only via 1980's or 21st century stereo mixes), plus a previously unreleased instrumental version of "Batman".
Also, for previously unreleased 1968 recordings which debuted in the "30 Years of Maximum R&B" box set(which had the songs in 1990's mixes), the recent Japanese SHM-CD product debuted the original 1968 stereo mixes("Melancholia", "Fortune Teller"). The 1970 version of "I Don't Even Know Myself" and the early mix of "Postcard"(both bootleg favorites from their appearance on a 1970's vinyl bootleg "Radio London") both get their first official release via the Japanese discs. And the live B-side "Baby Don't You Do It" appears at its full uncut length(2 minutes longer than the edit heard on the B-side of "Join Together"). The CD of "Who Are You" used a previously unreleased alternate take of one of the bonus tracks. This may not be a complete cataloging of the material exclusive to 2010-2011 Japanese WHO CD's, but I'm giving you a general idea. These were variations of interest only to hardcore fans.

Not at all entirely true, considering how roundly hated the US discs of My Generation and A Quick One are (those JPN discs would sell well if released here), but even if your pronouncement was true, it would also be true of the Beach Boys discs, if not more so. Hawthorne CA was 2 discs full of alternate mixes and unreleased tracks, and was a big sales disappointment. These new discs are much closer to a Hawthorne situation than The Smile Sessions. That sales lightning won't strike twice. The market can only hold so much BB product coming between the Smile box and a new career-spanning box. I'd much rather have the latter, if it includes unreleased material, released here than the mono-stereo discs.
These discs are quintessential Japan-only product. Get 'em while you can.

You can download the FLACs and easily convert to MP3 yourself if he doesn't offer both. I'd rather see him only upload the former than only upload the latter.
sryz if that sounds assholish, just stating that I'd rather have the option.

Ian, I totally agree with you that I'd MUCH rather have a box set that included previously unreleased stuff than album reissues if I could only choose one or the other. I just hope we get news on the this box set soon. I don't care if we gotta wait a bit longer, but I'd like to know where it stands (gosh, I'm sounding like Phil!)
However, I think it sucks that the group can't have all of their studio albums available in US editions on their own, and not as two-fers. There are so many other bands MUCH less historically important than The Beach Boys, yet their catalogs get treated with much more respect. It's a shame.
Also, there is something else that I feel should be mentioned.
Hawthorne, CA
probably woulda sold quite a bit more if it actually contained more previously unreleased songs. As far as *new* titles, what did we get? "A Time To Live In Dreams" and "Lonely Days" I think is it. And as far as truly different alternate versions, there was "Time To Get Alone", "You're With Me Tonight", and "Break Away". That is not much. And Brother and Capitol knew that had much more to work with, as they had a Brother rarities set apparently planned. And they used exactly zero unreleased Brother cuts on the album. So while the album is worthwhile to me and many other fans with those few truly new things and some cool, revelatory stereo mixes, there was just no way that thing was gonna sell in huge numbers. It kinda reeked of barrel-scraping despite the fact that there is full barrels to pick from.

I keep getting into the same situation and have realised that the time has come for some external storage – oner for pics and one for tunes. That way my Mac might speed up a lot too… it'll cost but the advantages should be worth it.
And I can't get the idea of shiny new mixes and remasters being condensed to MP3 format - what's the point? Most of the benefits will be lost. Like skimmed milk powder instead of cream… three-bar electric instead of open fire… Skoda instead of Roller…

You can get a gig or 2 free at most of the cloud vendors.
And I know we're all really poor as a result of the 50th year, but external hard drives and 8 gig memory sticks are pretty cheap and a good investment if you've got a lot of shi* to store

I have some shocking news for you: we may be getting U.S.A. editions after all, on September 25th, though the pricing implies that this will be Capitol importing the Japanese discs. Check Amazon.com

Not shocking to me - certainly shocking to you.
$20 is a reasonable price - doesn't imply anything.
I love it. Enjoy the crow!

A U.S.A.-manufactured 1-CD album would not be priced that high. If either the U.S.A. release of the 12 discs or the release of "Greatest Hits" is actually correct, I would expect Capitol to break the "Wall of Secrecy" no later than early September. Let's see if they do!

Looks to me the whole bunch is coming. The price is probably just preliminary.

These are listed at the UK site also, aloing with this:
Greatest Hits: 50 Big Ones [Import]
Beach Boys (Artist) | Format: Audio CD
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Greatest-Hits-50-Big-Ones/dp/B008U6QAA0/
So, 50 Big Ones it is! No further details given as yet.
CORRECTION: other than the Sept 25 release date, same as the imported remasters.
Imported to the UK, that is: the US and Japanese ASIN numbers appear to differ on the different Amazon sites. This might be US discs after all, Phil; that price might well fall.

That's what I'm thinking. Since 50 Big Ones comes out the same day I'm highly doubting that's the set price....Obviously this is part of a big campaign for Capitol - I think we'll see a price reduction in the near future.
Definitely ordering Smiley Smile, All Summer Long, and Today though!
