All the Adult/Child songs are great in their own way, just like all the Love You songs. SIDOI is the greatest song. It was included For A/C but the label rejected it for not being commerical enough I think. Then Mike took them to MIU, something Carl and Dennis didn't want to and the result was utter disaster. I think A/C would have enjoyed more success than MIU for its artistry alone. At least it  was something to be proud of and not 'an embarrassment of my life' - Dennis

The album is pretty enjoyable and the song is easily in the top 10 70's songs by the boys..it's hauntingly beautiful...I wondered what inspired Brian to do a song like that..
Even the title of that album adult child is awesome it defines Brian perfectly..

I love the song.  In some ways I prefer Brian's demo version from the "I Just Wasn't Made For These Times" soundtrack.  His rough voice definitely compliments the sadness of the lyrics, you can really feel his pain.  It's too bad it was thrown away after Adult/Child was abandoned (that is until the Good Vibrations box set came out), it would have fit perfectly on the Love You album, same with "It's Over Now."  Both those tracks deserve better than being buried on an out of print box set.

I think it's an emotional masterpiece and one of the saddest and most heart-breaking moments in The Beach Boys catalog. My favourite part is the bridge (when I was younger...).

It's a classic song. Brian did a beautiful job w/ it in terms of the melody and arrangement (on the A/C version), and the demo version on IJWMFTT is well worth hearing, too.  Smiley

Interestingly, Brian was not enthusiastic about re-working on it with Gary Usher in 1987. He just went along.

The song indeed is beautiful (notably - middle eight), but all the same it's not my 1st choice of Adult Child. I rank Life is For the Living & It's Over Now higher.
SIDOI has quite a Sinatra vibe in it that is the only letdown to me. Though Brian's voice is much better than Sinatra's imo.
I'd say both your preferred songs ("LIFTL" and "ION") have an even stronger Sinatra vibe to them----and not to their discredit either.

Usher's new lyrics for it really sucked. IMO.

I half-agree with you, It's Over Now sounds indeed like a Sinatra staple (though not certain about "stronger"). On the other hand, LIFTL, with all those jazzy arrangements & cheerful melody, could've been more suitable for singers like Liza Minnelli or Cilla Black. Frank has rather downbeat voice for jazz, I reckon. Then again, I know nothing about Sinatra's career, heard only 4 or 5 songs of his entire catalog. So maybe I'm missing the point of the argument here.

Only Newguy's threads or in general? If the former, what you have against him? Just asking genuine question.

Great song. Fun to play those chords on the piano. But i had never heard that Usher and him worked on it! Even though I can imagine it being pretty bad, I can also see how it might be pretty cool...

You really don't want to know.  Usher was a terrific producer but his "attempt" at lyrics to this song was worse than horrible.

Think, wretched schlock.

Here ya go Runners, Usher's new lyrics to Still I Dream Of It:

Looking back in time,
We did so many things together,
They're still with me now
Like an aging wine
Your memories seem to get better
With time somehow
Still I dream of you
And the magic days when we first fell in love
Still I dream of you
'cause in my heart I know we're still linked by the stars above

Young and beautiful
Your face is still as fresh as if we had just met today
That was long ago
But the moments that we shared at night are here to stay

Still I dream of you
And the magic days when we first fell in love
Still I dream of you
'cause in my heart I know we're still linked by the stars above

Now I've had other girls
But when I'd look in their eyes I'd image you
I'll do anything to get you back and end this solitude
But until then
I'll be content to dream of you

Still I dream of you
And the magic days when we first fell in love
Still I dream of you
'cause in my heart I know we're still linked by the stars above

Still I dream of you
Still I dream of you
Still I dream of you
Still I dream of you

Usher, like Melcher, was way past his sell-by date when he hooked up with our boys at the point in his career. Remember him for the great stuff from the 60s.

I wonder why he felt compelled to rewrite the original lyrics.

The original lyrics, I think, are great and they really have a certain feeling to them.

I don't mind the first verse as words themselves, but as lyrics for this song, no - they ain't got sh*t on Brian's original lyrics. As Mr.Waves just stated, it's totally puzzling as to why anyone felt they needed to be re-written to begin with. Those lyrics sum up a certain side of Brian and his music so well. They should've never been touched and Jesus mother fucking Christ, if the band weren't on board with Adult Child, they should have at least had the common sense to have this one close what became MIU album. I just cannot wrap my head around "Winds Of Change" being considered a great closer and this one not.

The story posted over at the Smile shop of the fan asking Brian to sign the sheet music to this song at some point in the 80s is perfect and the fan telling Brian it's "great" and "a Pet Sounds song" is spot on.

Thanks fer posting, Paulos. ^_^

I'd second that.  As a closer to MIU, this would have worked really well!  And then "My Diane" wouldn't have stuck out quite so much, as the one melancholy track on the whole album...

Cheers,
