thanx i'm totally gonna ask me mom's friend and this clip saddens me :/ poor brian ..his voice now is a better then back then!

I think his voice was better then. He just hadn't figured out how to use it yet - yet meaning after he scorched it on cocaine.

Also, the mix for that TV concert was a disgrace.

1981-82 was easily the worst era for the band in concert. Seriously. Firing on absolutely no cylinders, totally phoning it in, the only one who seems to be a good sport about it is Bruce.

Help Me Rhonda from the Long Beach concert is even creepier just to hear Dennis scream "I LOVE SHAWN" during the song.

Yeah, this era was a trainwreck. Not even Mike and Bruce in 1998 or Brian in 2003 were this bad.

Hmm, Really?  Haven't listened to this in a long time. BUt I liked this comment from the video:  >>this version is fucking awesome. he at least gives his falsetto the old college try, and then switches to a lower register. he ends up singing a killer harmony part and basically nails it. not an easy song to sing my friends. love it<<

Funny, I was thinking along those lines right before I read his.  Different strokes...

Of course that period (without Carl) was not one the group's finest hours; I can't defend it. But, specifically, as far as Brian is concerned - vocally - it wasn't as bad as you might think - IMO.

I saw a concert during that time, and, maybe because I was so excited to hear Brian doing so many lead vocals, I thought he did OK. It had been five years since he was "back", and a lot of the "deer in the headlights" look was gone, he was more relaxed (maybe he was stoned, I don't know, probably was), he wasn't croaking out his vocals, and, it appeared that he was trying to sing the songs instead of rushing them. I mean, there was even some phrasing and ad libbing. His voice was strong and he was projecting. Yeah, he wasn't hitting the high notes, but I don't think he was trying to hit them. Or, maybe more specifically, I don't think he had his damaged voice figured out yet, like he finally does now in 2012.

I know now that he was regressing. I didn't know it then. He was getting heavy again (in 1981), but in some interviews he appeared relaxed and normal. I was still optimistic for his future. Of course, that was all shot to hell a year later when Landy got a hold of him, and his voice was never the same again.

There is another 1981 Long Beach video floating around where Brian sings "God Only Knows". If you can catch that video, it might explain what I'm getting at. Or not.

And people wonder why I feel the way I do about the egotesticle myke luhv. Shocked
What would you do if you met Mike Love?
Been there, done that several times-was not impressed-stand-off-ish would be the word.

Well, no Sh#t!

Looking at it from Myke's shoes, it can't be comfortable meeting (several times) a guy who is absolutely seething with red-hot insane hatred for you. What was Myke supposed to do: see the barley restrained violence in your eyes and give you a hug?

BTW, why the hell would you bother meeting a guy whom you hate with all your might several times??
Only because he was there with Brian, Carl, Al, Dennis and Brewcee. With the exception of the P/S and Smile episodes, Myke hadn't pulled alot of his sh*t yet.

What was wrong with Brian's 2003 shows?

My question exactly. Wasn't that the year they added the Wonderful/Cabin Essence medley into the set? I saw this show in NYC (The Beacon Theatre, right?) and I thought it was great. It was coming on the heels of the Pet Sounds tour, and things were getting more interesting by the minute.

The Wonderful/Cabin Essence medley was played as early as 2002 during Brian's second tour of the British Empire; it was also played during the late summer mini-tour of the United States and also during the Australian winter tour.

Compared to 2002 and 2004, Brian's 2003 period is a clear low point. He just didn't seem into it, in my opinion. Of course, Darian being missing for most of the shows didn't help (listen to bootlegs of gigs where Darian is not present and you can hear the difference).

Oh and almost forgot this, man it really killed a part inside of me when i first watched it :

Last summer, I was driving down a highway in Virginia when I saw a dude in a white cadillac, on an adjacent lane, drive right over the carcass of a dead deer.  The deer exploded and its innards sprayed out all over the place...including on the front of my car.  I could have turned away at the last second, but I was afraid that if I did, I might not be able to avoid any new obstacles created by the impact.   Even today, I still wished I could get that image out of my head.

Thankfully, now I have something even more horrifying with which to replace it.

Eeek.
The only thing worse than that is Bruce's "Big Dog" shirt.

It's the John Stamos version of Forever.

Honestly, you can't say that it's not a respectful cover. Sure, the video is absolute sh*t. The man is a true fan; as much as that statement will irk the uber-fans on here, it's the truth. He respects the source material and he's not trying to one-up Dennis.

On a related note, David also sang Forever during Michael and Bruce's 2008 UK tour. He also does it very well.

You could do a lot worse than Bruce Johnston's thighs and shins.

To me a low point was indeed the Stamos "Forever". It wouldn't have mattered half as much (IMO) had they not included it on "Summer in Paradise". Coming from someone who enjoys SiP I find the inclusion of "Forever" (and also "Summer of Love") to be a big low point.

Gee, wait. That wasn't the Beach Boys, that was "Jesse & the Rippers"
Some of the members of the  BBs just sang backing vocals.

Stamos and his appreciation and performance of "Forever" drew thousands of new fans to The Beach Boys, so it couldn't be all bad.
