The album naturally went to #3. Incredible accomplishment for a legendary band with 50 years in the biz.
And as someone pointed out: if they were really desperate for a number 1, the band/label could've easily bought another 10K copies without us having a clue. I've seen that kind of thing done recently for an unknown band.
Still psyched for BW and the crew. I'm thinking it's gonna inspire Brian & Mike to write a bunch of new tunes together.

Here's a chilling scenario: Realising were outsold by Alan Jackson the band decides to release a country-pop album in an attempt to move more units, picking up where they left off in 1996.
I jest, but anyway, #3 is amazing!

Highest chart peak for a new Beach Boys album since 1965. Awesome news! I hope B Dub is pumped.
Exactly. How can anyone find that disappointing?
I know, I know, but for the last few days we all got sucked in to the thought we could have a number 1, admit it
Speak for yourself, but not for me, please.
Fair enough. I got sucked into thinking it could go number 1. I admit it. 3 weeks ago I also never dreamed it would go top 10.

I don't think there is any actual blame to be had for the album's peformance. #3 is great.
However, I don't think it's an uninteresting point that many people (not anybody here on this board) probably did pay over $100 for a ticket to the BB reunion show yet didn't buy the new album. I think that's an interesting thing to ponder. This is true of most acts. When I saw McCartney in 2002, I'm sure many if not most of the 15,000 in the arena had no intention of ever buying "Driving Rain."

New album looks it's dropping to about #16 in week 2. Yikes! For comparison, Alan Jackson is holding at #4.

Wrong..
Beach Boys numbers come in really late, the chart is at 40% at the moment..
I know that's hard to understand but it will increase a lot when the chart reaches 100%

Were the QVC numbers included in the first week? That would explain it. It also had the boost of Target and Amazon selling the CD for $7.99 the first week. I'd expect it to drop quite a bit when people who wanted it knew they had to get it that first week to get it that cheap.

Why would sales for the Beach Boys be reported any slower than anybody else?

No idea but that was the case with the first week sales..
It might be because they are selling the albums at concerts etc, or it might just be the label

I think it got this high mainly because of all the fans (including the common fan) that got the album as soon as it was released. I don't know how much of the non fans, regular music buyers get the album. But I don't think it will last very long up there (hope to be wrong though)

#17 on Billboard for the second week of release on sales of 22,922 (64% drop from week 1). Good, bad, or about what you expected? Personally I had my fingers crossed for at least a second week in the top 10.

The album isn't distinguishable enough to stay very high in the charts. People bought it because it was the Beach Boys and it was a good album, not excellent.

This is the way the charts work today - everything is loaded up on the front end, ensuring an inevitable drop in week #2. It happened to Madonna, Springsteen, Jack White...and now The Beach Boys.

Well 22,000 sales ain't half bad, I'm not too upset. I think he album might hover around that area in the charts for a while so long as they keep selling it at the shows.

I'm not quite convinced of the link between album sales and excellence of product...I wouldn't attribute that level of discernment to the public, at least as far as the hordes of stupid lunkheads here in the U.S.

I think it was a hit because it was a special record. Reunion - Anniversary - Brian's back, etc. If they do another one I'm sure it won't chart as high as TWGMTR no matter how good it will be. The promotion won't be as heavy as this time and I also doubt that a tour as big as the current will happen. It's all about the celebration outside of us fans
