You kinda answer your first question don't you?  I'm curious why it didn't make it.  Maybe they just didn't think much of it.

The song was recorded October 28th and 31st 1967 (as per Andrew's site), as you said, for the Wild Honey album.

As for why it didn't make the album, it was never finished, thus why it's so short on the Hawthorne album.

While this thread is here, I wanted to ask if it's since come to light who wrote this one since the Hawthorne compilation was released? That's gotta be a Brian Wilson melody, but I'm sure the lyrics were the questionable part.

While I'd never want to have left the title track in the vaults, "Lonely Days" is indeed pretty great, even in incomplete form.

I also enjoy the version where it sounds like Dennis is struggling to get the drumming down, with Brian shouting, "We can't cut the song without a fuckin' rhythm section!" or something at the end. Poor Dennis

I absolutely LOVE 'Lonely Days'. Just the perfect Beach Boys sound. That Bass! I've always thought it sounded more like Bruce's work than Brian's...that said, it would have been Bruce's best work if it was!

I've always thought it was Carl protesting that he needed a little more time to get the drumming down. 

Yes, this song is a gem.  With a second verse of lyrics, it could have been releasable.

I'd prefer to keep the title track on WH , but the gorgeous "Lonely Days" would have sounded really nice at the end of the album. "Mama Says" has always felt like a bonus track to me on WH -- I've always liked it much better as part of "Vege-Tables."

I recall suggesting that Carl and Dennis played dual drums on "I Can Hear Music" based on video and audio evidence, but I don't know if we ever agreed on that.  Isn't that him on "Long Promised Road" as well?

I haven't listened to it in a long time.  Because the drumming sounded amateurish to me (on "Can't Wait Too Long" also) I assumed it wasn't Dennis and that it was Carl's voice.  I could be wrong.

I was only thinking of this song the other day and how it could have been a nice tune. This extended version is good! There are so many unfinished BB gems out there - such a shame they didn't complete them/release them.

Come to think of it, it is pretty amazing that they excluded Cool Water, The Letter, Cant' Wait Too Long and Lonely Days while choosing to keep Mama Says and How She Boogalooed It.

And why on Earth did Brian do this one in mono? I fail to see the reason when mono was made essentially for it to sound better from radios and loud speakers. But everyone knew Wild Honey was never gonna get radio airplay or be  a huge commerical success. + by 1967 hardly any artists did stuff in mono. This album needs a stereo remix!

I doubt they ever approached anything now or then with the attitude of "This will never sell." The guys were artistically driven for sure, but it doesn't mean they weren't commercially driven at least some of the time.

That's hardly anywhere near the truth.  Stereo didn't really mature until 16 tracks and up were the norm, i.e., after 1969.

Not strictly true. Wild Honey was the last LP released by the band to be mixed in mono.

I've noticed many artists had stereo albums with mono single mixes, so I guess there was a middle way. Rolling Stones are good example.
After Smiley Smile failed I cannot imagine why they would think WH would do any better. In many way's it was as radical as SS given that it was a white band doing a soul album including a Stevie Wonder cover. One cannot even begin to attach this album to their surf image

Yeah, iirc Carl played every instrument on LPR and "Feel flows" except the trumpet/horn/whatever it was (I'd have to listen again to get it back to mind)
