Here's an attempt at reconstructing the original verse melody of "Do You Like Worms" using the 2004 BWPS vocals and the clip of Brian singing in the talkback from '66. I used an alternate take for the bridge instrumental, which is slightly slower and has the piano mixed louder. Just for fun.

It needs to come in on the second bar, in the same place as the 2004 melody comes in, i.e La La La La Once up-on-the-sand-wich-isle. Try it. It works, You'll never go back.

Very nice and interesting work indeed, but I've yet to hear an interpretation of this line that feels right to me. It's certainly more interesting than the more droning style of BWPS, but the flow just isn't there. "..isles the social structure steamed" always ends up coming off as a big sloppy slur of saliva and sibilance.

I think it works better without any lead at all, personally. I was just listening to the BWPS version the other day and I'm like "why's this jerk singing when I'm trying to listen to this great song?"

And production aside, I’d so much rather hear a 14 year old David Marks shred some guitar on Chug-a-lug than hear a 51 year old Mike Love sing about bangin some chick in a swimming pool.-rab2591

You know, I did mess with that idea in my head. For some reason at the time I couldn't compute how I'd be able to fit all the words in the rhythm allotted.
I might try that. I'll probably come up with a few different configurations, and see what works.

Thanks. I agree, it doesn't sound particularly great. The time stretch remnants and the robotic melody in the harmonies works against it. But, food for thought nevertheless.

First, let me say all your work is stellar. This is just a suggestion. Maybe try it from where I said, and don't bother linking it to the BWPS melody. Just let it trail off as it is. I think you'll find it is perfect. It fits the backing vocals beautifully.

The guy who did 'The Complete Smile' version with Boundless Love(Tune X) had a nice interpretation, bit more forceful and not as lagging as BWPS.

Indeed! I would love to see this.

No. I hear it sung over the second 'rock rock and roll ply....' line.
'Once upon the sandwich Isles etc' is sung to the descending bass line!?

Was the "verse" melody even conceived of back in 1966?
