Original, non-Beach Boys compositions played live?
«
on:
March 01, 2012, 02:38:05 PM »
I was wondering if anyone has a list of songs the Beach Boys played live which were written by band members but not released under the Beach Boys name. For instance, I recently saw the video of the band performing "Country Pie" from Mike's Celebration band album, and I've heard that they played Carl's "Heaven" in concert after Dennis passed. Just curious if there are any more instances of this.
Thanks!

"Country Pie" wasn't written by any of the BB. Google it.

Whoops, I probably should've phrased my question better. The song may have not been a BB song, but it was written for another project which happened to feature a Beach Boy.

OK so i think what you are getting at is you want a list of songs created for Beach Boys side projects that were performed live by the Beach Boys. Off the top of my head that sounds like a blurry line. But in a sense you could say things like Barbara, I've Got A Friend, even River Song which were all proposed Dennis solo tracks, but were performed live by the BB's...but then you could say hey but River Song started as a BB's track...but i think Country Pie was tossed around as a potential BB's track too..so yeah blurry. I think Cuddle Up started as a DW solo track...ended up being a BB's track, was performed live by the BB's...yada yada. Blurry.

And Brian performed Love and Mercy and a couple of other solo-type tracks during Beach Boys shows -- but he performed them during a solo section without the rest of the band. So not exactly pertinent either ...

"I Write The Songs" for one.
That's blurry too...he wrote it, and it was recorded by David Cassidy...later Barry Manilow had the hit, then later Bruce put it on his solo LP. After all of that he finally played it live with the BB's, but not really WITH the BB's. Chronology suggests it was not created for a BB's side project and played live by the BB's. But maybe this thread's criteria is mutating.

So I Write The Songs is completely suitable? Not a recorded BB's song, rrather Bruce's own, yet played during their sets

Yep, this is exactly what I mean. Good list so far. Any others?

Depends on whether you see the Wilson project (also known as the Usher sessions) as preparatory work for a BW solo project or a BBs one. Given that Mike sings on at least one of the tracks, it's clear there was some thought given to the latter possibility.

Yes, that would definitely count. I wasn't aware the BBs had ever played it live.

Are there any recordings of the Boys playing River Song live? (i'm sure there are, but i've never come across one)

Hunt down the Hartford 1973 show, they play it on there with Blondie singing lead. It's also a great show.

Make Love Not War and Pisces Brothers have also been performed.
Well, I can't 100% confirm Pisces Brothers, but there was an interview with Mike before a show where he said they were
going to
to play it that night. who knows if they really did?

Brian, I guess - performed live once, at one of the 1967 Hawaii shows.

Thanks. I ask because I once read on a BB website that this was actually a Dion, Desi & Billy-song, but couldn't find any confirmation elsewhere.
