Why would the average Brian interview have ever heard of Sweet Insanity enough for them to mishear Brian saying something else as Sweet Insanity? also, GIOMH could arguably be referred to, off the cuff, by a mentally ill old man, as a rerecording of Sweet Insanity.

I don't see how this is possible. Most of the best(?) material was already re-done on Gettin' In Over My Head.

I feel like no one even read the interview. Read this: "I couldn't believe the standing ovation I received when I re-recorded Smile and Sweet Insanity and played at London's Royal Festival Hall for the first time." Obviously he was referring to Gettin' in Over My Head when he said that.

Maybe he realised how bad his singing on GIOMH is, and he decided to do it right, with his backing band?  Grin

Even the most hardcore Beatles fan will admit that at least The Beach Boys' group harmonies were better than The Beatles'.

I know several who wouldn't. Hardcore Beatles fans are like hardcore religious nuts IMO. They are incredulous that the whole world doesn't think as they do, and get very threatened / defensive when challenged. I know of no other fan base with that attitude.

Ha ! Ever talked with hardcore Presley-fans ? I guess it's the same with most artists.

Interesting point. Most of the time I think that we're somehow a unique bunch, with all our total devotion and our obsessions. But when I contemplate this a bit deeper, I come to the conclusion that any major artist has a hardcore following like us, with those debates about mixes, remixes, mono vs. stereo, lost treasures, boots, and the endless bickering about lost nanoseconds in the coda/fade-out of a song.

Must be genetically determined. And it is a psychiatric disorder predominantly linked to the male gender.

Now the reunion news is out of the bag, he has to make up more barefaced lies to tell journalists?  LOL

http://bahighlife.com/News-And-Blogs/Notes-From-A-Traveller/Notes-from-a-traveller-Brian-Wilson.html

It's clear that these are not direct quotes. They're probably distilled from what Brian said. For example: "One day I may go back there and play again for the older hippie crowd, as it's set in a beautiful part of Surrey."  That construction "as it's set" is a British thing more than an American thing. A few Americans use it, but it doesn't sound like Brian.
Maybe Brian said something about "Smile and Gettin' In Over My Head" but the interviewer didn't hear the second one, so he went home and looked up (relatively) recent BW albums and took a guess that Brian had said "Sweet Insanity."

I like Sweet Insanity. The sequence of songs Do You Have Any Regrets, Thank You (yeah, I know, the lyrics ...), Hotter, Spirit of Rock & Roll, Rainbow Eyes and Love Ya kicks ass (granting of course that much of the remainder is beyond horrible). Back me up, somebody.

Just listened to Sweet Insanity all the way through, still in shock about how bad this album is. Thud

There's nothing wrong with the songs themselves, but the album is seriously let down by its horrible production /instrument choices. No BW 88 is synthy too, but it's quirky and has Brian's stamp all over it. Sweet Insanity sounds so horribly late 80's as to render it nearly unlistenable to me.

If you can, check out Darian's '65 style version of Do You Have Any Regrets. I don't have it, so don't ask, but you'll hear what a great song it is when given better production. Classic BW.

Do You Have Any Regrets is on youtube, and it is Darian saving that song, turning it into another BW classic.

There's some great songwriting on Sweet Insanity. "Do you have any regrets" is a favorite of mine and the ballads "Rainbow eyes" and "Don't let her know she's an angel" are phenomenal. Unfortunately Brian totally destroyed the former on GIOMH while doing a good job on the latter one.

To sum it up, they blew it, they blew it consistently, they continue to blow it, it is tragic and this pathological problem caused The Beach Boys' greatest music to be so underrated by the general public.

Read this: "I couldn't believe the standing ovation I received when I re-recorded Smile and Sweet Insanity and played at London's Royal Festival Hall for the first time." Obviously he was referring to Gettin' in Over My Head when he said that.

But they never performed SWEET INSANITY at Royal Festival Hall, nor anywhere else.  It's not obvious to me that he meant GIOMH; I'd be surprised if he remembered the SI title — and I wouldn't assume he'd draw a connection to GIOMH — the track-lists aren't terribly similar to each other.

I love the production/arrangement of "Rainbow Eyes" on GIOMH, a big improvement over the synthetic sterility of the original...however, Brian's vocals are quite bad. I know folks don't care for the drums on the "Don't Let Her Know She's An Angel" remake, but I think it's a decent job all around.

Are you serious? He says he has zero memory of doing lots of major things.

I don't know the man personally, thus have never spoken to him 1 on 1 but I've always assumed what Brian Wilson remembers and what Brian Wilson says he remembers are two very different things.

For example, he was recently asked if he remembered making GV, and any parts of SMILE, and his answer was no.  Why would he lie about that?

I'm not saying he's lying as such, but I'll give an example relating to me, in real life (outside of the WWW) I've learned to play dumb with certain things, if one person knows that I know something, suddenly everyone knows and I constantly get asked the same questions regarding it, thus I deny knowing that specific thing, now put that over the course of 40 years in the context of a mentally ill man who has a lot of pain tied up in certain memories, the last thing he is going to want to do is answer the same questions about something like that over and over again, it's easier to deny knowing about it.

He lies to interviewers all the time if he doesn't want to answer a question. Seriously. He has total recall on all things musical and mathematical (same thing). He can remember every note of music he's ever written. He can remember any phone number. Some of the stories about his memory are uncanny.

That's ^ intriguing.  Do you have any links to examples?  He apparently also has synesthesia, which might be connected(?)

One example would be in 2003, where he decides to call Van Dyke.... and whips his phone number out of thin air.

Synthesisa is probably a stretch, because if Brian isn't just chatting **** in the one interview this is mentioned, he has a 'palette' of about 4 colours. Most keys are red.  LOL
