Multitracked concerts

Guys, I need a little assistance.  Seems there's a guy who thinks no one recorded more shows from say 1969-1980 to mulitrack than the Dead.  He listed (though not with a detailed amount of shows per listing): 1969 for Live Dead, 1971 for Skull f***, Europe 1972 (not sure if Venture was a multi-track), Winterland 1974, 1975 Great American Music Hall show, Cow Palace NYE 1976, Winterland 1977, Egypt 1978, Nassau Coliseum, Radio City and Warfield 1980.

How do the BB stack up to that from 69-80?  You could even include the 64-68 era if you want here.  Just off the top of my head, I felt the BB would come close in that era.  Does anyone have a true count or can come close?

I'm no expert on this but have a considerable dead collection as well as beachboy recordings of various sources.  I would wager that the dead have every other major act beat in every area of live recording, hands down.

Since the dead openly allow their fans to record and bootleg their live shows, pretty sure no band comes close to that volume.

According to Eric's setlist archive, Surf's Up was performed on 8.15.73 in Chicago so it's possible there is a multi-track of it somewhere.

There is a bootleg of them doing a few songs on a radio (?) session in Amsterdam, 1972, on something called Grand Gala Du Disc. Heroes & Villains, Sloop, Surf's Up and Student Demonstration Time (well, three out of four ain't bad). Qualities a little fuzzy but still pretty great and I can assume it's a soundboard. Can't remember where I found it though, so, well, you know what to do.

I think we're getting away from OP's original intent, which was MULTITRACK recordings -- not audience tapes, cassette dubs from the soundboard or house feed, etc.  So we would be looking at concerts recorded by The Beach Boys, their record company, or possibly a video production house.

Very interesting question -- and I wish I knew the answer...

The Gran Gala Du Disque concert/interview program, from Radio Luxemboug (not Amsterdam) was not recorded on multi-track.

The bbs recorded some shows on the nov 67 tour and on the July 68 tour. The 1970 big sur show was taped but the bbs don't own the masters. In 1972 they taped a New York and New Jersey show for a live album and than taped many summer 1973 shows for the in concert lp. A few 1975 beachago shows we're taped and I think the bbs now have the masters . Also leaving out the two shows recorded in dec 1968 for live in London.

The beachago masters were with guercio until recently. I think they were returned recently but no one could find the tapes of the encores. Not sure if they turned up . Maybe cman knows. There is a tv documentary of the tour and clips used to be on YouTube.

I have a bad recording from April of 72 I did , the first time I saw the BB, GA Tech, what memories, Ricky and Blondie , I didn't know who they were! You never know what you are seeing! Same year I saw Elvis!

Used to have that in stereo from, I suppose, the radio feed. A rumor arose that this "SU" was a 1972 re-recording as there was essentially no audience noise. The quality, back in them days of cassette being the dogs bollocks, was about A-. For comparison the 1970 audience tape with Brian subbing for Mike would be about E+/D-, that is all but unlistenable.

The Gran Gala Du Disque concert/interview program, from Radio Luxemboug (not Amsterdam) was not recorded on multi-track.

Grand Gala Du Disque Populaire was a TV broadcast, the one in 1972 being held on Feb. 25th. GGDD actually was yearly TV show in which Dutch music prizes (Edison awards) were awarded. Can't remember that it was broadcasted on Radio Luxemburg. It shouldn't be mixed with the Radio Luxemburg concert; that was May 72.

Songs played by the BB were Heroes And Villains, Sloop John B., Surf's Up, and Student Demonstration Time. Several recordings of the show, unfortunately only audio, do the rounds. The TV broadcast hasn't surfaced... picture can be found though.

AGD I wonder if you had a bad source for that 1970 Brian show-I have heard a much better quality version than the one you are describing. Perfectly listenable and to my ears quite enjoyable!

Thanks for some of the feedback.  Of course the Dead would have the most recordings, but we're only talking multi-tracked shows, and it's possible the BB might be right there with them.
