Fixing Mr. Desper's Problem

Hey Buddy, We're all very sorry about the problems you've been having while posting here.
I have several ideas, not all include changing browsers.
1. COMPATIBILITY VIEW
If you click the button shown in the image below, Internet Explorer will try to re-format the support the site you're currently viewing.
This helps with forums, because most were created in older versions of IE.
2. UPDATING IE
I'm also using Windows 7 (64-bit) and I tried Internet Explorer and it worked fine...
Are you using the newest version of Internet Explorer?
Try updating here:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/internet-explorer/products/ie/home
3. USING A DIFFERENT BROWSER
I know changing browsers sounds like a hassle for one website, but honestly, I think using either Firefox from Mozilla, or Google Chrome will drastically improve
your experience with any website, please at least consider changing
Chrome:

Firefox:

I had the exact same problem as Steve is experiencing. You reach a certain point of typing in the message window and it stops scrolling down automatically to enable you to see what you're typing. There's a text limit; all of a sudden you can't see what you're typing anymore and it keeps bouncing back to the last line typed. The problem is Windows 7, Explorer 8, and this board. Chuckie advised me to upgrade to Explore 9 but I was unwilling. I suggested that he update the board software to be compatible with ALL browsers, and fix the bug. Chuck will not provide support with the board's technical issues - just collect money for it. This board works fine with Windows XP (and SP3) and Vista, but not Windows 7 and Exploder 8. Steve says he doesn't want to upgrade from Explorer 8 to Explorer 9 because his other apps won't work correctly, but I really think they should with Explorer 9. It's been thoroughly tested with Windows 7 and determined to be tried and true.
Mozilla Firefox is another excellent option. Works great for me with Win 7 on my other two computers. If you want to install Google Chrome, you're dancin'.
We'd sure like you to fix those issues and have you keep posting here, Steve!

I, I bet I know what she’s like, and I can feel how right she’d be for me. It’s weird how she comes in so strong, and I wonder what she’s picking up from me. The compatibility view is apparently the only keep-the-same-browser-user-side solution there is.
Apparently, the only website-side solution is mentioned here:
http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=309186.100
- which forces the browser to use compatibility mode instead of letting the user choose. Looks like lots of forum software has the same problem with those versions of IE.

Also, if he avoids quoting he could save space... maybe just using @noname or whatever to indicate where his answer is directed.. or not.

COMMENT TO ALL:
Thank you for your response and all the ideas. I will try your suggestions later tonight, time pending. I did not mean to get so mad on line, but typing without seeing what you are doing can really get to you.
I miss the photo thing because in answering many of the engineering questions, it use to be easy to get a photo from some Internet source and copy/paste it with one button. But now to do a simple thing like that involves so many steps that I just don't have the time. So making a point with an illustration becomes a big time-involved project. Take for example showing how tape is stored on a reel versus a hub. Yes, you can discribe it in so many words, but with two photos, cut and pasted from another place within the Internet, is so much easier and gives a much better explaination. You think all that photo button is used for is to post photos of BB people to the fans, but I used it as an educational tool. Now I can't. Look back at my past postings. I used photos to show microphones, equipment, rooms, etc. If this is still possible to do, please let me know. I wonder if transposing from WORD using photos and script would make the copy and paste over with the photos? Guess I could try that. Otherwise, I just not going to use a third-party website for photos and illustrations. This was copied from WORD.

The other thing Steve could do is type his answer in a text document, then cut and paste - that should work, shouldn't it ?

Hey Stephen, I used
Imageshack.us
All you have to do is get a direct link to a photo (EX.
http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n295/guitarfool2002/stoogesphone.jpg
)
and put [img and [/img
(unclosed brackets so you can read them, just add
]
)
around the link.
Hope you figure it out, if you have any questions just ask

I uploaded that photo to Photobucket, which is the free host, then on Photobucket you can click on a tab "direct link" under the photo which copies the link location. Then access the image icon above the posting area, put that copied link location in between the "img" brackets, and the photo posts automatically. The key is first getting the photos uploaded to a free host, and Photobucket has never caused any issues for me.

COMMENT:
Thanks again everyone for the help. The deal with me is that Chrome is in beta and has lots of documented security issuers. For issues with Firefox I refer you to this link [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Firefox_:_Issues], which you may need to copy and paste. Many I have experienced by way of MAC. I did consider using Firefox only for The Smiley Smile Dot Net Message Board, and I might try that app
But this from FatherOfTheMan looked more friendly since it enables photos to be captured in WORD that will transfer to Smiley Smile along with WORD copy and paste’s. I hope I understood that right.
“….Hey Stephen, I used Imageshack.us

Working in WORD is OK, but you then need to type in all the codes for italics, bold, or font color, but it’s not so bad.
BUT THEN THIS IS NOT THE REAL ISSUE. HERE IS THE CORE OF THE PROBLEM.
This algorithm, this program, is a product. I assume you buy it and then use it to construct a Q&A, blog, discussion group, etc. to your requirements. I say this because I have seen this same format, this same “look” used on other discussion pages. Those users or subscribers must experience the same compatibility issues with Internet Exployer 8 and this program as some of us do.
There are 1.093 BILLION users of Internet Explorer. 66% of the market
There are .443 BILLION users of Firefox. 27% of the market
There are .110 BILLION users of Chrome. 7% of the market
There are .427 BILLION users of Internet Explorer 8. Twice as many as Firefox.
There are .203 BILLION users of Firefox 3.6. Half as many as Iternet Explorer.
Internet Exployer 8 alone has almost as many users as all Firefox versions combined.
Reference >>>
http://royal.pingdom.com/2010/04/16/does-internet-explorer-have-more-than-a-billion-users/
Here is a quote from the above reference. I respectfully suggest that the WebMaster for Smiley Smile open the link and study the statistics.
QUOTE:
Web developers, whether they like to admit it or not, often focus most of their attention on their favorite browsers, usually Firefox and WebKit-based browsers like Safari and Chrome.
This study, however, shows how massively important it is for web developers to make sure that their sites work well in Internet Explorer. Seeing the enormous numbers that hide behind those market share percentages does put things in perspective. Even the dwindling IE 6 still has a huge user base (anywhere between 200 to more than 300 million users). Some services can probably get away from supporting IE 6 depending on what kind of audience they have, but at least make sure that IE 7 and up work, and work well.
It also shows that it pays to make sure that websites work in less common browsers like Opera. In spite of having a very small market share (“hey, it’s less than three percent!”), tens of millions of users hide behind that number. Do you want to pass that up? And why force those people to use another browser just for your site?
END OF QUOTE
It is my opinion that whomever (or is it whoever?) wrote the basic program now used by the Smiley Smile Board should support Internet Explorer 8 for the reasons cited above. As a user of IE8 I do not feel it asking too much for the designer of this program to make it compatible with the most used web browser. After all, half-a-million potential users is not a number to dismiss!

PS: nOW i'M TYPING BLIND AGAIN. i'M THE type of person who likes things done correctly. I make a recording or apost that may be read by hundreds of people, I want to be represented with a good image. When I try to make what I post look good, and the probram screws it up (like it is foing riht now) I'm not really interested in using the thread unless I am assured professional and functional representation of what I type. so far, this is not what we have here. Sorry, but this thread is NOT AT THE POINT OF DEMONSTRATION, leave alone publication. Please try to get your program supplier to get their act together!
This post took over an hour to put up here in some readable form. don't have the time to do this very often. If you want me to continue posting here please take the points made in this post to heart, and try to make the program work with IE8 ASAP. Thanks for listening.

Stephen: In the time it took you to write the post, you could have installed Firefox or Chrome and posted a half-dozen times. The browsers are simple and easy to use. My workplace has Firefox, and our security guys feel good about it. I understand it is frustrating, but your comments are so appreciated that I think it would be worth your while to try, if only one time.
Thanks, and all the best.

Hi Mr. Desper, have you tried to use the Compatibility View button in IE 8 that was mentioned in the first post? I just opened a reply with IE 8 to see if I would have the same problem and sure enough I did. I couldn't see anything I was typing (I can see how frustrating that must be). But I switched to compatibility view and everything was back to normal and working correctly. I suspect it will work for you as well. Give it a try and let us know if it does the trick.

Stephen, sorry to hear of your troubles with the board, hopefully you find a solution as the information you provide is invaluable!
Posting pictures can be tricky as it took me a while to perfect it too. As others have mentioned, Photobucket is a great site that gets the job done and it's free. In fact, I've reached maximum capacity on my first account and had to open a second one to continue uploading my pictures (concert photography is a hobby). They have made Photobucket really easy (and fast!) too. It literally took me 3 seconds to upload 3 images. And what is great is that Photobucket automatically provides you several links for you to post your photo depending on which format you need it in. The
IMG
code is the one you need for posting your images on this board. So once you've uploaded your image, you go over and click the
IMG
code, a quick left click should automatically copy the code for you and you go to your message here on the board and simply paste it in. No need to type in the brackets or the codes...Photobucket does it for you.
If you need any help with posting pictures or help setting up or navigating through Photobucket, please do ask!

Stephen, the button is at the top of your browser directly to the right of the address bar. Hopefully my screen shot can help:
Unfortunately, it seems the board has a limit for the size of the images we upload...apologies for the small picture. Hopefully you can still make it out...There are three icons: the first one is the Compatability function that we're suggestion you click (looks like a piece of paper being broken in half).

Just download Firefox!
http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/
It'll take you about 3 minutes to download, install and copy all your bookmarks over from Internet Explorer. It works great with the whole of the web. Download it!
Internet Explorer will have less than 50% of the market share by March:

There is that broken page icon in the right side your web address display window at the top of your browser window or you can access "Compatibility View" option and "Compatibility View Settings" in the "Tools" menu on EI8 browser. That will only take about 5 seconds and it worked for me when I was using EI8 and had the same issues.

COMMENT: There is more to a computer and it's files than "Quit using Internet Explorer." Consider this: First, I gave you a link that relates all the outstanding issures with Firefox. Second, I own a substantial block of Microsoft stock -- which pays dividends. Firefox is a compeditor of MS, so I have a vested interest to continue using IE8. Firefox is a open source browser managed by Mozilla. Mozilla is not a publicly traded company. It is a private company. You may like Firefox, but when and if you become a shareholder of Google or Microsoft, or even Mozilla (if it should go public) you will find it puts a different spin on which products you support when you own a piece of them or the company that makes them
