While talking with Bruce McCandless II (the astronaut who is in the well-known photo floating in space untethered to the shuttle in the MMU EVA gear) I discovered that the Beach Boys song, Kokomo was played up to his second mission when they launched the Hubble Telescope. I decided to research the matter further and came up with this list of tracks which have been beamed up to spacecraft:

STS-51-F July 29-August 6, 1985
8/31/85 ―I Get Around‖ by Beach Boys
CAPCOM: James D. Wetherbee

STS-26 September 29-October 3, 1988
10/1/88 Parody of Beach Boys ―I Get Around‖ with lyrics ―We orbit ‗round‖ was provided by radio disc jockey Mike Cahill.
10/3/88 ―Fun, Fun, Fun... Beach Boys parody with original lyrics.

STS-31 April 24-29, 1990
4/27/90 Kokomo by Beach Boys
CAPCOM: Kathryn Thornton

STS-49 May 7-16, 1992
5/12/92 ―Kokomo by The Beach Boys.

STS-51 September 12-22, 1993
9/21/93 ―Surfin‘ Safari by The Beach Boys

STS-60 February 3-11, 1994
2/10/94 ―I Get Around by The Beach Boys.

STS-62 March 4-18, 1994
3/9/94 ―Wake the World by The Beach Boys
3/13/94 Crew with ½ day off beat MCC to wakeup call. They sent down ―Surfin‘ USA by The Beach Boys. MCC responded with ―I Get Around by The Beach Boys.

STS-64 September 9-20, 1994
The high number of Max Q songs was in honor of mission specialist Susan Helms, a keyboardist for the all-astronaut band. PC
9/10/94 Parody of The Beach Boys song ―Fun, Fun, Fun called ―We‘ll Have Fun, Fun, Fun on the Shuttle, sung by Max Q (from Mach 25 tape).
9/13/94 Parody of The Beach Boys song ―I Get Around called ―We Orbit Around‖ by Max Q (from Mach 25 tape).

STS-82 February 11-21, 1997
2/21/97 ―Sloop John B. by The Beach Boys (down linked by crew)
CAPCOM: Chris Hadfield

STS-85 August 7-19, 1997
8/13/97 ―Good Vibrations by The Beach Boys

STS-107 January 16—February 1, 2003
The crew worked two shifts around the clock but Mission Control sent wakeup calls anyway.
1/28/2003 Blue Team - I Get Around by The Beach Boys. Dedicated to Dave Brown. PC

STS-116 December 9 –22, 2006
12/18/2006 ―Good Vibrations, performed by the Beach Boys for the entire crew in honor of the vibrations the spacewalkers may create today to attempt to free the balky solar panels.

MARS SPIRIT AND OPPORTUNITY (Music used as wake-up calls to the Mission Control staff on earth)
Spirit
Sol 11: I Get Around, by the Beach Boys;

Opportunity
Sol 13: Little Honda (aka First Gear), by the Beach Boys (Jaunt away from lander.)

Thanks for finding this stuff! Love to hear that The Beach Boys have been heard multiple times in space.

The Beach Boys are timeless and will always be played no matter where we travel to in the universe...I just pray that future human beings will be intelligent enough to destroy all known copies of every Justin Bieber album.

Ever want to hear some Beach Boys songs mashed up together like The Beatles' 'LOVE' album? Check out my mix!

All roads lead to Kokomo. Exhaustive research in time travel has conclusively proven that there is no alternate universe WITHOUT Kokomo. It would've happened regardless.

And production aside, I’d so much rather hear a 14 year old David Marks shred some guitar on Chug-a-lug than hear a 51 year old Mike Love sing about bangin some chick in a swimming pool.-rab2591

Doesn't it worry anyone that the same people who find Kokomo entertaining are in charge of huge lumps of metal orbiting our plant, which could tumble to Earth at any time?

LOL

Indeed! I've been fascinated by spaceflight since I watched 'Apollo 13' as a child. I was fortunate enough to have lived near Kennedy Space Center a decade ago - I got to see a fair number of launches from the coast. It's a shame they canned the Constellation program - but I guess science takes a backseat to our empirical wars Undecided

LOL You have a point there!
