So, in that clip of VDP talking outside of Tower Records, when he was discussing [/i]Smile[/i], he quoted "ding woodie pearl hang ten" as some lyrics he wrote for Smile in the same breath as "Over and over the crow cries..."

Thing is, I never saw/heard any other mention of these alleged lyrics!

Has he ever elaborated on that, or was he just perhaps making something up off the top of his head to give an idea of the bizarreness of some of the lyrics he contributed???

No, I think he's using that as a reference to the type of things the group sang about pre-Pet Sounds. They weren't his lyrics.

Is this one of the videos on the Smile Sessions promo DVD?

That interview is so seventies it's unreal.  The attire, the Wings promo in the background and then the guy on the cycle shows up.  I love it.

I wonder where that sun hat is now. Probably in Durrie Parks's garage. Someone should ask her.

Exactly. He was saying the lyrics changed from surfing topics to an 'American Gothic trip' for SMILE. "Hang Ten" is a surfing maneuver.

Capital should've made a replica of the hat the lights-up.

I KNOW it's a surf term -- it means literally hanging your ten toes over the board, right?

Anyhoo, I guess I just didn't realize the full context...what did he say? (can't watch YouTube where I am) Something like "The lyrics went from 'ding woodie pearl hang ten' to 'columnated ruins domino'" -- kinda made me conclude that those were actually unused Smile lyrics...

Yeah, he says: "It went from ding woodie pearl. Hang ten - I mean I didn't know that language - to columnated ruins domino."

So it about what they were doing before vs. what they were doing with Parks. He is saying that he wasn't familiar with the kind of lifestyle that produced the old lyrics and vice versa.

That's exactly what I got from his statement too.

VDP didn't know much about surfing culture, but he knew a lot about riding Datsuns while he was tripping: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7UvwaB6Bx60&feature=related

He didn't know "ding woodie pearl, hang ten" but "columnated ruins domino" was much easier to understand.  Brow Brow

My box is on its way from Amazon, going to pick up the 2-CD at Best Buy in another hour and a half when they open, but I swear if the Barnyard Billy lyrics aren't to be found anywhere I will go all Howard Dean scream and claim this is the worst box set of all time! Yeaaaah!

But seriously how awesome would it be if someone could take that line from the IJWMFTT doc and insert it into "Barnyard"   :-)

I heard someone do it once, years ago before BWPS. It wasn't very well done and I don't think it could be.

Yeah I know, I seem to recall hearing it as well.

Just trying to be like some of these bitchers and find something to complain about. Apparently the sarcasm didn't quite shine through like I intended.   :-)
