I know, I know. This time, the CDs have been manufactured, everything is ready to roll. They couldn't pull this release now even if they wanted to. But just indulge me for a moment and imagine...

...that we all heard the radio doc on the BBC last night, with the tantalising glimpse of Surf's Up 67... and then SMiLE was shelved again!

There would be a few lucky people who'd reviewed or heard it, and everyone else would be left wondering.

It must have been a bit like that in 1966-7. If you were lucky enough to have been Chuck Britz, the band, or one of the Vosse Posse, you'd have heard stuff. A few music journalists too. The general public might have caught 'Inside Pop' and a glimpse of Surf's Up there. But that was all.

So imagine that on Monday, it was announced that the release was shelved...

People would archive the Youtube video showing Brian demonstrating the light-up box version, in the same way that we listened longingly to the Capitol Sales Promo, savouring the bittersweet knowledge that at one point, SMiLE was sure to sell a million units the following January. We'd endlessly squabble about which boot fragments belonged to which title on the Amazon tracklist. People would make Frankenmixes patching together the bits of Surf's Up 67 we heard on the radio with the December 66 take off the GV box set, trying, reaching to make it complete in our heads. The debate would roll on endlessly about who had pulled the plug at the last minute. Was it Brian and his 'management'? The record company? The other Beach Boys? And so on and so on...

So I think of all that, and then I think...

...thank f**k that isn't going to happen this time!

And I wouldn't have to pay £100 for it

I know, I know. OK then, imagine it got to where it was pre-mastering, say 35-50 days ago... and THEN it had been cancelled. Before it was 'out there' like it is now. Imagine that.

I'm down with this idea. The disc 1 sequence would be mythologised and we'd all be running through those leila posts for eternity trying to piece together are own Smile with all the fly ins etc!

I'm going to weep like a girl in HMV, whilst nodding sagely and grinning manically. All three simultaneously.

Would say the same if Mike would be bashing Smile right now in every interview....

PRO SHOT BEACH BOYS CONCERTS - LIST

To sum it up, they blew it, they blew it consistently, they continue to blow it, it is tragic and this pathological problem caused The Beach Boys' greatest music to be so underrated by the general public.

"Hey Mike, so Capitol are releasing the SMiLE Sessions this year..."

"Yeah, I'm going to stop you there. I have no idea why they're releasing that pile of ass, to be quite honest with you. I mean, a song called 'Surf's Up' and it's about fucking buildings falling over? It's not what we're known for. I said to Brian, "Hey, we need some of that Good Vibrations 'girl/boy' stuff, you know? Don't f*ck with the formula.", and you know what he did? He threw his copy of the Subud at me and recorded his tears for some song called 'Water' or something. He then tried to set each of the guys, and most of the wrecking crew, on fire to see which made the best sound for some track he was doing at Western. I mean, he's my cousin. But the guy's an asshole. Next question"

All roads lead to Kokomo. Exhaustive research in time travel has conclusively proven that there is no alternate universe WITHOUT Kokomo. It would've happened regardless.
What is this "life" thing you speak of ?

I think Phil is actually happy it's coming out - and believes it only came true because of his constant nagging.

According to the urban dictionary:

1.    Lucky Phil

Used as a sarcastic response to someone who persistently has bad luck. Originally from Australia.
E.g."Have you heard, Mike's broken his toe again"
"Lucky Phil!"

It's bad luck that PC has been thrown off a few boards? Wow...Lucky Phil!

“For me, making music has always been a very spiritual thing, and I think anybody who produces records has to feel that, at least a little bit. Producing a record . . . the idea of taking a song, envisioning the overall sound in my head and then bringing the arrangement to life in the studio . . . well, that gives me satisfaction like nothing else.”

"Yeah, well, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man."
