Please excuse me if this has already been mentioned elsewhere, but if you have a lot of money to burn, you can get several different exclusive releases of
The SMiLE Sessions
on the Beach Boys' official website. You can get the switch light box set that "includes a switch inside the box lid that allows the fans to turn the store light on and off." You can get this for only $699.99. If that weren't cheap enough, there is another version of this that comes with an actual surfboard--that's only $5999.99 (only 10 available). Whew!

Are you surprised?
People who know Smile don't usually associate surfboards with it. That deal is ridiculous. I hope no one buys it.

The surfboard offer is terrible and it really bothers me. It's a perfect example of what is wrong with general perception of The Beach Boys, and hey, look at that, the offer is coming directly from beachboys.com, imagine that. It's such a slap in the face to this music/album. It's a marketing decision that insults the audience/fans by assuming that people are incapable of disassociating the band from the cliche California beach image that ultimately does nothing but bog them down. Here is the group's biggest departure, a wildly sophisticated album that was to be at the forefront of musical advancement, truly the avant garde in its time, the follow-up album to what is regarded as one of the very best of all time, a musical statement that has zero to do with the group's beginnings and market image...and so there is an offer to couple the box set of this music with...a SURFBOARD? Tee hee, cute. FUUUCK YOU. And it doesn't matter that this is an extremely limited offer with an exorbitant price tag that 99% of the population cannot afford--it's about how those in power absolutely refuse to stop milking the way the Beach Boys are branded and sold, even with something like Smile. Yeah, yeah, Capitalism. The most unfortunate thing is that, of course, this hokey, insulting, anti-art image that refuses to be put to rest by those who have the power to cease perpetuating it, inevitably influences the way the media covers the band, which in turn trickles down to general public perception, so it's just a totally f***ed ouroboros. I, too, hope that not a single person in the entire world buys this tacky, embarrassing offer. It would send out a good message. Surf's up!

Oh P.S. Evidenced by some of the comments on the official Facebook page and elsewhere, there are quite a few people who are under the impression that the special, expensive offers on beachboys.com are the ONLY way to get the Smile release.

This is true, i don't understand how people don't poke around on the internet for 2 seconds to get information. However, keep in mind that the official Smile Facebook page directs people to order it from thebeachboys.com so the casual fan who might have only heard about this release via the Facebook page (imagine that) who is not so inclined to research on their own, is likely to think this. Their loss, of course, but it
is
pretty bad marketing. But then, we've already established that above, huh.

Very nicely put.
As Mark Linett says in the interview though, it took a lot of explaining to the execs to get them to realise just how unique SMiLE is. They don't get it. It's a business isn't it? Luckily for us though, the team who put it together
do
understand SMiLE. The production department and the design department have done us proud. Just a shame the marketing department are cretins.

Well said. We are so fortunate to have guys like Alan and Mark at the helm - the scary alternative would be a Smile box set that was put together by a team on par with the geniuses who came up with the surfboard idea, i.e. no clue what this music is or why it's so important. Thankfully the worst they did was a cheesy surfboard promo that the general public will never have any clue about.

Although what you're saying is likely true (re: utterly clueless execs) i think what Mark was referring to in the interview when he said that it took a lot of explaining how unique Smile is, was the nature of the sessions in comparison to, not only the straightforward nature of, the Pet Sounds ones, but a pop album in general, and that because of this uniqueness (modular recording, Brian's constant re-recording), it would require a different approach (than that of PS) to properly archive it, and more discs to truly represent the vast amount of sessions. I don't think he was alluding to the style of music or the thematic content of the album.

Pretty much all of the exclusive version are absurd. The Surfboard set goes without saying. Even the light up set. Sure it's autographed, but if I'm gonna pay $700 for a box set. It should be autographed by Brian, Van Dyke, Mike, Al, Bruce, every member of The Wrecking Crew, and anyone who had anything to do with
SMiLE
It's obviously a big cash grab on Capitols part. A cash grab that will fail miserably judging from the responses on FB. No one in their right mind is going to pay $6,000 for the surfboard set. That truly is an insult to our intelligence. The album has nothing to with surfing, 99% of SMiLE fans have no need for a surfboard. I mean I live in Atlanta, what am I gonna do with a surfboard? It is pretty ridiculous.

Can someone explain to me how a surfboard and signature cost, at best, $5850? Seriously?
Also, yes, the surfboard is extremely ill-fitting/borderline offensive when it comes to being released with, of all things, this.

Still get the box here in 2011, so its all good. I would at least get 1966 Brian to put some polish on the rough tracks from "love you" and finish all sorts of sweet songs like "can't wait too long" and "sherry she needs me"
