Came across this today and was stunned by how much he sounds like Brian at the very beginning. Very, very decent recreation of my favorite Pet Sounds song, and he's spent years doing the whole album. What dedication!

I like it. Very good cover indeed.
BUT.....it says he spent 10 years doing the whole album? 10 years!!! With that can do attitude he'll have a Smile cover polished off before all religion ceases and electricity is free.

Ten years might have something to with the fact he was doing it on the ridiculous looking machine.... It sounds great for what it is, but why do it on an outmoded piece of kit that looks ridiculously difficult to use? It could sound lots better with more modern tech, even by 2001 standards.

All roads lead to Kokomo. Exhaustive research in time travel has conclusively proven that there is no alternate universe WITHOUT Kokomo. It would've happened regardless.

Saying, "I spent ten years on this," rarely means, "I spent the entirety of ten years on this." Brian didn't spend 38 years on Smile, knowwhatimean? It was likely something he did for fun in his spare time between other projects.

I really didn't think he spent 10 years solid recording this.

What I want to know is how homeboy can make money off of this. Seems shady.

Didn't realize he was selling it. He could have permission to do so, but I doubt it.
I'm also puzzled as to why anyone would want to buy what is basically a verbatim copy of Pet Sounds, competently performed (sans the occasional incorrect melody) but absolutely lesser than the original only because it does nothing new with the arrangements. Hate to sound so critical, but...

Yeah, he's selling it on iTunes for a buck a song/10 for the album.
I'm not on board with him selling it, but I do get a kick out of listening to the recordings and appreciate the work that went into them... Especially since I've been working on a somewhat similar recreation of SMiLE for more than 2 years now (non-stop, of course).

Why should he NOT sell it? Todd Rundgren did a whole album side (Faithful) of cover songs in which he tried to duplicate as closely as possible five or six songs from 1966-7...including Good Vibrations. This Pet Sounds recreation was obviously a labor of love. I wouldn't buy it, but I don't have any issues with him trying to get a few bucks for his countless hours of effort.

Yes, but Todds was an artist on a major label. As were Camper Van Beethoven doing Tusk, for instance. The Beach Boys/Fleetwood Mac would be paid by proper channels, and so on. This appears to be an independent, he cites himself as the label on itunes....
The other samples sound a lot worse, tho - the cheap midi approach is not so cool

I don't think there's anything inherently wrong about it.. I just wonder about the copyright issues surrounding a guy profiting off of it. I should probably know, since I'm a lawyer and all.

This may be the first one I've seen. Generally it's, "The Beach Boys are overrated, and the only good thing they did was a direct result of aping The Beatles."

If it's true that people in high places read this board, then I don't think it will be long before he gets told to "cease and desist"
(come and say you love me)
But I'm with Hello Kitty on the cover version thing. What's the point unless you bring something new to it?
(like my version of "surfs up")

Here's where you can hear preview clips of all the songs. He sounds a little more like Dean Torrance than Brian.

Every time you spell Smile as SMiLE, an angel's wings are forcibly torn off its body.
