Book recommendations on songwriting, lyric writing, and music theory?
«

I would like to try to improve my knowledge of music in order to improve my song writing. I don't want to stifle the creative aspect, but I want to have more knowledge to mine when writing. In no particular order I am specifically interested in:
- Song writing
- Lyric writing
- Music theory
Could you tell me what books you recommend *and why*?

Jimmy Webb's book
Tunesmith
discusses lyric writing, the craft of songwriting, and theory pretty in-depth. It's just a good all-encompassing book and an interesting read from an experienced songwriter who knows his sh*t.

Ray Harmony "Hack Music Theory" series. F.ex. "12 Music Theory Hacks To Learn Scales & Chords". To buy/ preview it, check the site Hack Music Theory.
NB - used to check this subboard, zero interest now.

For lyric writing, i really like Pat Pattison's "writing better lyrics", but most of the material is covered in his Coursera songwriting course if you want to go that route. It doesn't focus much on lyrical content necessarily, but just structure and phrasing to make existing lyrics connect. I've edited lyrics differently since.
