During the 'Bicycle Rider' section.......
«
on:
August 12, 2011, 08:58:58 AM »
...the guys go into these animal noises and then these strange kind of orgasmic sounds. All the while, you can hear Brian cracking up in the background and at one point he you can hear him say something about a 'Swedish girl". Anyone ever notice this and do you know what he actually says in its entirety?

That part is cool but Al Jardine didn't like it since he was not as sexually liberated as the Wilsons & Love.
In Hawaii Brian joked about cunnilingus on stage. Must have been the sight of all those Hawaiian teenage girls...

I think that animal section is really cool - AND it predates the Beatles 'Good Morning, Good Morning' and Pink Floyd's 'Animals' album.

It's one of my favourite SMiLE moments, and it works wonderfully.
If I recall correctly though, on the test mix on the SOT box, it's omitted.
Was its inclusion on GV30 based on a 60s mix or did Mark include it, like Veg fade, as a way of giving us more SMiLE material?
(Vol 17, disc 1, track 10, or so I'm told… it's listed as a vocal overdub but I suspect it's a mix attempt… gawd, I hope the new set improves upon and defines all this randomness!)
If the box set contains anything revealing/improved etc etc etc about the sequence of sections this all relates to, I'll be in heaven.

I used it as background for my Barnyard mix..."out in the pigpen", etc. Works great there! Not sure how it would fit into a long mix of H&V though...

It sounds to me that it's Carl Wilson saying "swedish frog" rather than Brian Wilson.

But it's in the blend on the outtakes on the 93 box set and blends wonderfully!

First time I heard "the swedish frog" segment, I heard "swedish girl" and it made sense with the orgasmic noise and climax.
Most of the "chants", "noises" have been recorded with his gang (Van Dyke Park, Michael Vosse, Jule Siegel, David Anderle...), I was wondering about who was the guys we can hear in the "swedish frog" segment. Only the Beach Boys or the 'gang'? or both?
I always thought, and still thinking, that this segment was a good example to show how Brian intended to include "psychedelic sounds", "chants", sound effects"... into the Smile album.
As he did with the "animal noises" in Barnyard, "you're under arrest" in H&V, the chewing noise and other "crazy" noises in Vega Tables, the "water chants", "the wind chants", the "hawaiian chants", the crakling noise in Fire....
Like he said, Smile was intended to be an album with sketches, sound effects, chants, instrumental part and lots of humour, it makes sense.
It was maybe also inspired by Jan & Dean "Filet of Soul" and "Jan & Dean Meet Batman".

ATTENTION OBSESSIVES:
I saw a clip of the Bernstein footage that INCLUDED Brian playing [with incredible cool] the Bicycle Rider theme on the same piano as he did Surf's Up on. It was on YouTube that I saw this one - it sounded and looked incredible to see Brian playing that part with this strange look on his face...
Anyone know where I might find it again?

I don't remember who said it, but I distinctly recall reading on this board that someone played Zappa for Brian and he absolutely
hated
it. The similarities are there, but I don't think Brian was necessarily influenced. Much like the Beatles, it's just a case of two people/groups exploring similar territory around the same time.

this section was originally going to be "h&v part 2"..origianlly Heroes and villians was going to be a two parter, part one starts with "i've been in this town etc" and ended with "in the cantina" and an instrumental part two stared with the frogs/bicycle rider etc and ended with "SO LONG TO THE CITY" etc..when they released the single originally they simply took the first half of part one and the second part of part two and made one song out of it taking out the cantina and the frogs/bicycle rider stuff..when brian released his version of "smile" he didn't do h&v1 and h&v2 he just did the "single version" with the "cantina version" added to it .. I hope they decide to restore part 1 and part 2 when the release the smile set because it makes more sense that way and that's how it was meant to be heard..

Haha, really? Doesn't surprise me, in a way. Like you said, part of it was just the zeitgeist. I think the Beatles were definitely influenced by Zappa, whereas with Brian it could be more of a general similarity. Or he felt like Zappa showed Brian could do some of the things he wanted to, even though he didn't want to be just like Zappa. Too bad he hated him, though. They're probably the two most talented guys to make pop music in the 60s.

It's his theory, but I think that's the only place it pops up. If I remember right, the book also tries to pin "I Wanna Be Around" as "I'm in Great Shape."

That book contains the odd example of Dom posting his dreams in print as fact. Terrific book, indispensable to researchers, but also contains one or two fantasies.

yes indeed, the book contains some inaccuracies about facts and photos.
But it is as you said indispensable!

As far as I know, Zappa's "Freak out" is a big influence for the Beatles, dunno, or never seen anywhere it was an influence to BW.
Though, this is totally possible.
