I was at work and didn't have the CD or booklet handy and was stupid enough to ask in a public forum where there are those (very few, thank God) who will happily pounce on such an opportunity to point out the inferiority of others. I made myself easy prey and couldn't care less. I'm merely a human.
But, AGD, if I ever need help getting a CD out of its case and into the player, you are obviously the go-to guy.
Simple question (as I'm a simple man) - how long have you had this CD ?
I've had it since 2000 and have never made it all the way through it in one listen, due to my earlier described problem of not being able to stop myself from listening to Goin On and Getcha Back in an endless loop. If I want to give BBs 85 a spin, I'll just play my vinyl disc.
The CD actually got soaked in spilled coffee about a year back, so I can't even open the booklet, if that helps
There's this thing called "the internet"...

OK, I get it!
You're like a guy looking at the scene of a plane crash and asking a survivor "Well, why the hell did you ever get on the plane"?
Unless you have severe autism, how many times can I admit that I made a simple mistake/assumption knowing very well I could be wrong?

That last line is in exceedingly poor taste.

It's not much more than chopsticks, but yes, after Carl's stuff, it is by far the best song of all the rest.

Singing-wise, BB85 is terrific. The biggest problems are some song choices and production. Production sounds like The Beach Boys meet Culture Club.

Yes, but when you think about it, the production certainly could have been worse!!! I guess that's not saying much, but, to my ears, Heartbeat City by The Cars sounds like really bad, shrill/artificial production by a band that usually sounded REALLY good as a band. Of course, the songs on that album are great, so it works, but I can listen to BBs 85 with much more ease.

'Male Ego' has always been one of my favorite late career Mike/ Brian shared leads. If some kind of reunion CD happens, for better or worse, expect something else sung the same way.
While Al still has the best lead vocal and would surely sing a few, another style could be a general group lead. ie 'Goin On'

I love the Goin On group lead. I can't imagine the song working quite as well with just a single lead.
I remember seeing them do a killer version on the show Fridays. I wish I'd taped it or something.... Hmmm, but now that I've been turned onto this thing called the intranet, or, internets, maybe I can look it up?

I'm probably setting myself up, but the same exact thing happened to me as well. The song Male Ego was not listed on the back of my disc, so I assumed it wasn't there. The lyrics were in the booklet of my disc, however. I just always assumed that my copy was some kind of misprint. I didn't realise that the song was even there until one day I happened to play the entire disc. And before somebody asks, no, I did not think to check to see how many tracks were showing on the disc when I put it in my cd player.

Well, look at it this way: there are people lurking here who would never ever make such a simple mistake and who really really need you to know how silly they think you are. I mean, they REALLY need you to know it..... You can easily live with making a silly assumption and admitting it and even poking fun at yourself, but they really need you to know that they KNOW you are a fool. And that need is much harder to live with than your simple mistake. So, look at it as a sort of public service on your part and enjoy the song..... And by all means, please ignore any possible irony related to the song in question being entitled "Male Ego"

I think it all comes down to most thinking that if you buy a Beach Boys CD and you are a fan and the album has been remastered, that you would play the thing at least once fully through. Thing is for me is that I forget that a lot of you guys are young and do things differently. When I play an album, I generally play it from start to finish. Also, I guess a Beach Boys fan just expects another Beach Boys fan to know such things. I apologize, if I hurt your feelings with my earlier posts.

All in all, I am very happy to have realized the song is indeed there on the twofer

Not to beat a dead horse, or perhaps TO beat a dead horse: upon inspection, my (pried apart) KTSA/BBs 85 liner notes make no mention of Male Ego being included on the CD. Sure, the song is mentioned in the illustrious liner notes (the ONLY source of information on the albums in question, I'm sure, right??) as a Brian contribution. And it is musingly assumed that many less informed "fans" (less informed than the liner note's esteemed author, at least) naturally assumed the track was a Brian production (the morons), but it makes no mention of the song either on the CD back or the track listing in the booklet. Therefore, unless the listener let's the CD continue going as It's Just A Matter Of Time fades out and doesn't hit the eject button (a bad habit of mine, perhaps), they'd naturally have no clue that the track is included..... So, eventually SOME idiot was bound to ask!!!!

I, along with just about everyone else in the fan world, assumed that "Male Ego" was a BW production for years after its release, for no better reason than it sure sounds like one: was as surprised as the next fan when I as told it wasn't (fortunately before
ComGuide 97
came out).

The opening "choppy" piano and synthesizer sure sounds like a Brian thing to do.
In fact, the first 10 or so seconds of "I Feel So Fine" from the "cocaine sessions" has a pattern that sounds somewhat similar.

It indeed does sound like a Brian production. Was Brian heavily involved in an, albeir, non-producer capacity or was it Levine doing his best to make it sound like a convincing Brian production?
