The only Beach Boys instrumental I don't care for is Nearest Faraway Place. I dig the surf instrumentals and I love the instrumentals during and after Pet Sounds. Favorites I suppose would be Diamond Head, Mrs. O'Leary's Cow, Fall Breaks, Pet Sounds, Let's Go Away For Awhile, Summer Means New Love, After The Game. I wish Brian made a few more spooky ones like Mrs Olearys/Fall Breaks.

interestingly I know most everyone hates 'nearest faraway place'....
imagine if we ultimately found out Brian Wilson wrote it....... that would change everything....

Sure it's cheesy, but it's also very pretty. Some people just can't deal with that.
Anyway- this is first instrumental that came to mind when I considered which would be my favorite:
Todd Rundgren- Prana

Yeah, I suppose you're right, but my favorite version of the song has no vocals/lyrics, so that's why I ended up including it.

Guess that counts, that there is an instrumental version. " Passing By " definitely not. The vocals are the key melody part of the song.
Another favorite of mine is "One of These Days" by Pink Floyd.

Oh, I don't think I've heard that version before.
One of my favorite instrumentals is "Hot as Sun/Glasses."

Eek. Forgot an important one. I only found it recently
after trying to identify it for over 40 years. The
mid-sixties "pirates"* used to give it heavy rotation:

*
Ships moored off the UK and elsewhere (but in international
waters) broadcasting pop music day and night. This was in the
days when the Musicians' Union had BBC Radio in its grip and
big bands and the like played their versions of the latest hits.

Two that I have not seen mentioned.
"Jessica" - The Allman Brothers
My favorite part is Chuck Leavell's piano solo.
"Intro" - Lou Reed (the intro to "Sweet Jane")

In 1974 Mike Love's concept album Endless Summer ignited a second generation of Beach Boys fans and stirred a comeback that rocked the music world.

Yes indeed----on both counts. I assume you mean the intro to the
Rock'n'Roll Animal
version....

Jus' heard this on shuffle:
Tonda Trio - Soul Scuba 95
Comments say it is sample of "Montara" by Bobby Hutcherson - well, Idk, not familiar, all I know it's a good smooth funk jazzy stuff. Very "city life".

Not sure that it gets any better than Burt's Casino Royale theme, but I love Pet Sounds. Hmmm..both have a Bond connection.

Buzzsaw...The Turtles
Apricot Brandy...Rhinoceros
969 The Oldest Man...Guess Who
Flying...Beatles
Pet Sounds...Beach Boys
Scorpio...Dennis Coffee
Rumble...Link Wray
Misirlou...Dick Dale
Amazing Grace...Jeff Beck
Sleepwalk...Brian Setzer [...more balls than the original by Santo and Johnny...which is still a great tune.]
Pick Up the Pieces...Average White Band
A Walk In the Black Forest...Horst Jankowski
Theme From Peter Gunn...Henry Mancini
Theme From Mission Impossible...Sly and Robbie version
Amazing Grace...Royal Scots Dragoon Guards
Scotland The Brave...any quality pipe and drum band...MASS BANDS even better...The Royal Regiment of Scotland.
Cast Your Fate to the Wind...Sounds Orchestral
Out of Limits...The Marketts
Surfin...Ernest Ranglin [Below the Baseline version]
Time Is Tight...Booker T and the MGs
There are 20 GREAT instrumentals. Should fill up a cd. Considered adding 'Our Prayer' as there are no lyrics...just human voices used as instruments. Counts as far as I'M concerned.

Ya......BuZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ-Sawwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww. [and some kind of a wordless vocal chant...and a 'd.j.' wrapping it up]
It's like saying Wipeout or Tequila aren't instrumentals.
I'm leaving it on MY list but feel free to toss it if you feel you must.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You might waste space on the cd though. Leave it on and add the afore-mentioned Our Prayer. [in the vocal instrumentals section.

Good to My Baby backing track. I was listening to the GTMB sessions an hour on loop. Great stuff. I dare say this is the best song on Today, again.
