i wasn't aware of this version til today... credited to just Wilson/Kennedy, with the original lyrics and bluesy guitar from the amazing Mike Bloomfield. released in '76:

Yeah, I like that version too.
Brian says nowadays that he doesn't like the lyrics. What may he think about these lyrics ?
Oh and didn't Van Dyke and Brian wrote it originally with Kennedy then bringing lyrics to it?

To sum it up, they blew it, they blew it consistently, they continue to blow it, it is tragic and this pathological problem caused The Beach Boys' greatest music to be so underrated by the general public.

I think these lyrics are just as bad as the ones on the BB's version, but I like the arrangement and the feel a lot. Almost sounds like a Ray Charles record.

Did Brian have a hand in the lyrics to this version? It sounds like a lot of the verses could've applied to him circa 1972.

"Ray, there's a way" sounds an awful lot like it could've been written by the same person who suggested the words "My friend Bob, he has a job" to one of his bandmates.

I love these lyrics and the feel of this recording, but now I'm realizing how much I like the Riley lyrics too. I always thought if I finally heard the original lyrics, I'd never be able to listen to the Holland version again, but not so.... It's like having two very different approaches at saying the very same thing.... Very cool
Past shipwrecked Daughters, of wicked waters! ..... I've always loved that line.
