Brian did his own version of Smile and will certainly be doing Smile cuts at concerts in the future.
But the big Q is: will Mike and Bruce be doing Smile songs? And what about Al?

 Huh

Why not? It was his brainchild after all, and finally it will see the light of day and he'll get his due recognition.
And more importantly, lots and lots of money.  Evil

Over and over the crow cries just give me the money...

Good Vibrations was scheduled to be on the original, aborted SMiLE, so it's a SMiLE song (even if "it isn't") that I imagine is performed at most of the Mike and Bruce Beach Boys concerts.

"Song(s)" - and if we're talking hypotheticals: it is also a Pet Sounds song - even if it isn't. I think Denni meant that she couldn't see Mike singing 'Cabinessence' followed by a medley of Barnyard/I'm in Great Shape/Workshop.

I can't see it happening on a regular basis (probably 85% of their concertgoers are still stuck in the surf music jukebox) - however I'm sure the reunion show will have a few SMiLE songs. Al just covered Vega-Tables at one of his latest gigs.

Nothing says Cabinessence like a chicken dance.

Maybe when he says "crow flies" he could flap his arms around.

He could always pull a few children out of the audience to join him on stage during "Child Is Father Of The Man". What he'd have them do at that point would be Mike's call, but another chicken dance wouldn't be out of the question.

Mike & Bruce did "Heroes and Villains" when they performed with an orchestra.

They have to promote it in some way. Brian and band are fairly used to Smile-material so it would be no problem for them. Mike & Bruce do "Good vibrations" and from time to time "Heroe & Villains". So I guess they'll play those. If Al should be part of the band again they might as well do "Vege-tables". Although it's a simple song I can't see Mike's band do this without Al. But I have a feeling that there's a possibility they could be doing "Prayer". And since Mike talks about "Wondeful" in the press-release, that one might as well show up. Dumbest thing in the world would be if they just gonna stick to "Good vibrations"

To sum it up, they blew it, they blew it consistently, they continue to blow it, it is tragic and this pathological problem caused The Beach Boys' greatest music to be so underrated by the general public.

Here's the classified marketing plan for the release of SMiLE Boxset! For the 50th Beach Boys anniversary:

EMI releases Smile Box - Brian performs Gershwin
EMI releases Smile Box - Mike & Bruce performs classic jukebox hits (make sure NOT to play Heroes and Villains)
EMI releases Smile Box - Al performs yet another version of Honkin down the highway and California Saga

Nah, not lame enough. It cuts enough close to the bone Smiley
And kinda explains the entire non-planned promotion that's been going on the past 50 years.

While I respect your right to your opinion...I strongly disagree...That "hold the note" for the Be True to Your School is a highpoint of any live BB show...What 70 year old entertainer can do that?  Mike does about half of the show leads or co-leads them...Mike is a great emcee, and for whatever reason, none of the other band members had that natural comic gift. (See Billy Hinsche's movie; interview with Ed Carter, On The Road with the Beach Boys 1974) Listen to a balanced and straightforward and "informed"opinion, from someone who is respected by many, and who toured with the band for decades and watched Mike night after night, for a long, long time.

A good place to check the historical setlists to see how much of the Smile or Smiley Smile album, which may not have been designed as a concert album would be Eric Anniversarios's Setlist Archive.  I just checked out a couple of shows near in time, to the release of Smiley Smile, and there were not a lot of album songs played live for many reasons; time/union constraints of the venue, while sharing the stage with 2 or 3 other acts, need to play some of the Gold Record hits, etc.  I think they strive for what is appropriate to the audience and to the venue.

Even Brian Wilson did SMiLE live, within the context of the "career music."  He did Rhonda, I Get Around, etc., because you have to take the music "as a whole" and not in a narrow "tunnel" vision approach.  I saw the Beach Boys Band three times last week, and can tell you that there is strong musicianship among that lineup, to perform this music, but the question is, given the venue, and the audience, which spans in ages from pre-teens to retirees, whether it is appropriate, outside of special orchestral venues, and an audience, who knows what is featured on the "menu" - as it is a work of art, but should be presented as such in a venue/context that is appropriate.

Good Vibrations is always on the menue...I have heard Heroes and Villains live but it has been a while...Maybe with the box set of sessions on the horizon, we'll hear it, and a few others more often from the Beach Boys... Wink

bgas - Have you seen Billy's (Hinsche) 1974 On the Road with the Beach Boys? If not, then you might think of getting the DVD.

It seems almost "cultish" - this new "Political Correctness" analysis of The Music...where it is not taken in the context of the times in which is was written/composed.  After all art and music are a reflection of the times in which it was written/composed...

If you can get a laugh from people you don't know, then you do have a comic gift...But, don't take my word; take Ed Carter's... Wink

The three shows I saw last week were sold out...it speaks for itself... Wink

Yes, I have, and have seen " On the Road"; but I don't see Mike's patter as a natural comic gift.  Billy Crystal, Whoopi, Lenny Bruce, George Carlin, the list is endless, but Mike's name isn't on there for me.
Get me: I'm not deriding his music/singing, just that he doesn't have the comic "gift";
Still: you're saying the three sold out shows you saw were because of Mike's comic gift?
All this time I thought it was the music.

Of course, what you are lumping together are "comics-by-profession" and and a rock band emcee who can keep the "flow" of a performance together and you are correct, it is a matter of taste.  What is compared here are apples to oranges...The "Sunkist" Oranges ® are musicians...

Let's not get derailed here...the topic is whether they will (the Beach Boys) promote SMiLE...and that remains to be seen...it would seem that along the line since the album's concept, Mike has promoted it onstage, but it would also seem that others in the record or public relations business would be charged with that project.  Mike can be heard live on one of the albums or compilations (Endless Harmony, I think) promoting it in the live context.

Mike does keep the show moving...I would tend to agree with Ed Carter and had never thought of his perspective...and that is a guy who was around the band since the late 1960's...I tend to defer to someone who has a better informed opinion than my own (as a fan.)  Those car/school songs are not even "my era" but, I can appreciate the positive audience response that I have seen time after time, and year after year.   Wink

Have Mike & Bruce ever done "All I Wanna Do" in concert? That's a great song and he sings it real nicely; credit where it's due and all that. Plus, didn't he write it too or something?

It's in all their best interests to promote the releases that bear their names. So, I think they will all support the Smile release.
I actually think more will be heard from Mike/Bruce/hopefully Al, as the touring band, than Brian( since he has released his own take on it)
I'd expect "The Beach Boys" to practice and perform more than simply GV and H&V. But what will happen is up to them.

At the official 50th Anniverary Concert (where tickets will cost $409.50), the Flame gents will join the rest of the full panoply of surviving Beach Boys onstage for a performance of Wonderbill with ML handling Carl's part.   Mike willl pantomime hop scotch while singing about chalk and numbers.
