The Best of Brian-less Beach Boys album
«
on:
August 30, 2010, 12:20:08 PM »
I was thinking of which album is the best Beach Boys album without Brian, but dernit, there's a hint of him on each album. So I propose to make (once again
) a fan mix album of the best BB songs with no Brian involvement at all. If I mention a tune that even has a slight hint of Brian, let me know.
All This is That
I can Hear Music
Long Promised Road
All I want To Do
It's About Time
Feel Flows
It's Getting Late (I can't remember if Brian has vocals on this)
Leaving This Town
Trader
Maybe I don't Know (can't remember either)
10 Years of Harmony
Love Surrounds Me
Only With You
Full Sail
Big Sur (early cut)
Where I Belong
Still Cruisin'
Bluebirds Over the Mountains
Lady Lynda
Cotton Fields (single)
Lahaina Aloha
Cuddle Up
Chasin' the Sky
Somewhere Near Japan
Baby Blue
Be Still
Livin' With a Heartache
Summer in Paradise album
Beaks of Eagles
Keepin' the Summer Alive
Lookin' at Tommorow
Tears in the Morning
How She Boogled it?
Country Pie
Everyone's in Love With You
Wouldn't it Be Nice to Live Again?
Go and Get that Girl
Nearest Faraway Place
Make it Good
Searchin'
Fourth Of July
Hold On Dear Brother
At the Hop
It's Beautiful Day

I am pretty sure Brian is on all those '85 tracks as well as Chasin' The Sky.

Brian's on "Feel Flows" - sings the bvs with Marilyn.
Also, add "Be Still" and "Livin' With A Heartache" to that list. I'm not convinced he's on "Santa Ana Winds", either.

By the way, according to Beach Boys scholar Andrew G. Doe, that is none other than Brian Wilson himself wailing on the harmonica! Fantastic song.

His voice is all over the second half of "It's About Time", isn't it?

Turns out the harmonica isn't him after all. Checking back on that, the first person to state it was was Brad Elliott. Ongoing research.

I think I have heard Brian at the end of "Santa Ana Winds." Listen for a faint "who-o-ho" as a response after "mind..."

I've always thought I could hear some of BW's compositional style in "All This Is That". Did he have nothing to do with the writing of that tune?

B.W. sings backing towards the end of Love Surrounds Me so replace that with the other awesome Dennis song off LA "Baby Blue". I'm also certain I've read that he sings during the chorus for "Long Promised Road", but as that song falls smack bang in the middle of the Al and Brian sounding identical period it's hard to say for definite.
Is Brian vocally present on Cease to Exist, because if not it needs to go on the list.
Also despite the misleading video he's not on Somewhere Near Japan which is their best 80's tune.

I have my doubts about Still Crusin' being eligible. Listen to the bv behind the "when we go cruisn'" part. Granted they are swamped in studio effects but if that isn't Brian's shouty 80's voice in there I don't know what is.

Brian's only presence on the 'new' tracks on
Still Cruisin'
is the overdubs on "Island Girl", "Make It Big" and obviously "In My Car", which was offered to the band very late and is, of course, a BW solo track with a couple of vocal overdubs from Alan & Carl.

I thought we determined Brian was about the only BB on Wipe Out?

Not a 'new' track - close on two years old by then.

Just kidding. While I do have a bit of a soft spot for the group's post-BB85 singles this one may be one of their worst ever. Even the voice of Carl Wilson couldn't save it.
