New Recording: "Longer"
«

This is a brand new (as in, begun three hours ago, finished 25 minutes ago) recording of my song "Longer." I've done and shared an acoustic guitar-and-vox version before. This one is piano based, with bass, acoustic guitar, another piano in spots, ukelele through effects, egg shaker, and some harmony vocals in spots. Hope you like.

Cool song. Reminded me of Bacharach, and then veered off into something that didn't remind me at all of Bacharach.

This is fantastic! I love it! And it only took you a couple of hours - wow.

Thanks very much. But to be fair, I didn't write it within that time: I had already written it and recorded it once before. This was just a spur-of-the-moment arrangement and recording. But yes, I do usually work quickly, so I can sustain interest. Otherwise I'm really lazy about things and let them sit and grow stale. (Of course if I took longer maybe there would be fewer mistakes and various shortcomings in my songs!) Anyway, this is the original, from a couple years ago, for comparison.

Revised mix of the new version, with a few newly recorded bits, too. New piano intro, new vocal part in the middle. Otherwise more subtle mix things. If you haven't downloaded and are going to, I recommend you ignore the one in the first post and go with this.

Lovely piece, like the momentum building up the 'chorus' bit which has one of those strange cyclical chord changes that you seem to do. Could be longer I think?

Thanks, MZ. I recall really liking those chords in the "chorus" (for lack of a better word--the bit with the vocal harmonies here) when I put them together. It's something like D, Dmaj7, Gmaj7, Bbmaj7, D, then after the second iteration, going back into the Fmaj7 and Bbmaj7 of the verses. I do like the 'round in circles feeling. As for the abbreviation, well, that's just me. I guess I'd rather have people tell me my songs are too short than the alternative. Besides, I had nothing more to say!

I like the piano version better (but that's more my kind of thing). It really is a great song . Listened to it 4/5 times in a row today. Great stuff!

Hi Luther,
so... first of all - I think it reminds me a bit of "Cool, Cool, Water"
The Piano is cool and your Voice is really nice. I havenīt expected this
:
I like those harmoies - really cool. The Production is made in a real high quality... what do you use for recordings???

Thanks very much, I appreciate that. I record with (some pretty basic gear and not much attention to detail or follow-through, to be honest) a Macbook Pro, Digital Performer, a Motu 8pre, and some pretty average instruments: mediocre mics, 2nd-hand console piano, a lower-end Martin acoustic, a low-end Fender bass, a decent but not particularly impressive Strat, and a bunch of even less notable stuff than that. So if anything turns out enjoyable to anybody other than me, I guess that's an added bonus.
