1  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian Wilson: Long Promised Road (2019 Brent Wilson Documentary) on: November 29, 2021, 03:41:43 PM
Anyone else want to box Jason Fine's ears when he ambushed Brian with info that Jack Rieley had passed away? Brian looked like he might have liked to.

As someone posted, brian posted on instagram when jack died a small tribute to him, so he mustive known he died, but just forgot....

Also did anyone notice him say hes never heard pacific ocean blue? But ive literally seen video of him singing river song....

Guessing he just has a spotty memory...

Also, LOVED the documentary. My gf who isnt a huge BB freak like everyone on here , she loved it too. Thought it was great. Even told her mom to watch it. haha. Overall, was really impressed with it.
2  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: 'CHAOS' The new Manson book on: September 07, 2021, 11:37:03 PM
I always thought Mikes story about taking a shower at Dennis' house didnt add up. Who goes to a party and takes a shower? Especially after manson had already been weirding them out, supposedly...That he was with some chick in there makes it make a lot more sense.

I saw some of the Joe Rogan interview with the author pretty crazy. I will read the book probably...One thing that hasnt been mentioned in this thread is that quote from Dennis from the 70s when he says something like "i know everything about why manson did it and what happened... as long as I live, I'll never talk about that" or something similar....If it was more than just Helter Skelter BS then that makes a lot more sense. Especially if he was possibly protecting Gregg or Terry for some reason. Didnt want to say that Terrys story in court was BS or something?

I was just watching neil young old interview with howard stern and he mentions hanging with Manson a few times at Dennis' house. Didnt go into much detail tho just how much it impressed him that manson could just make up songs non stop on the fly.
3  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: When was Brian using LSD? Was anybody else in the band? on: August 13, 2021, 07:41:39 PM
yeah mike said he used to smoke pot and drink not just a little but "half a bottle" of whiskey, etc. I think its clear everyone in the wilson/love family has addictive personalities, he was just lucky to channel that into meditation, imho.
4  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Greatest Brian Wilson-Mike Love collaboration? on: August 09, 2021, 02:54:01 PM
if Greatest == liked by most people, critics and their biggest hit, then Good Vibrations obviously.

And i do remember in the "what are mike loves best lyrics?" thread or posts ive read everyone says Good Vibrations...He really did do a great job with that...It was prior to his constant callbacks of their previous wasnt "im picking up good vibrations, shes giving me california girls..." or some crap

Everyone can have a different opinion, obviously, but i agree with the other poster who said its obviously Good Vibrations. Just going by what the chart success, sales and critical opinion. on Rolling Stones greatest songs on all time its listed, i think, (too lazy to google) at number 2 after Like a rolling stone.
5  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Joni Mitchell/The Beach Boys on: July 08, 2021, 03:25:24 PM
They both played at the "roosevelt jam" in the 70s a big fesitval in new york along with CSNY and some other idea if they interacted...altho joni's close friend neil young of course mentions the beach boys on "long may you run"

heres an article where they are all interviewed separately about it

Random question: does anyone else have a hard time listening to thoughts of you because there’s a short piano part that sounds just like the MASH theme song?

In case people haven’t seen it I believe this is the interview in question
9  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Top five bad career moves on: December 23, 2020, 02:25:37 PM
What about signing the 8 million dollar cbs contract in 77(?).  It gave us a run of ok albums like Light album, etc The band was in a horrible place (think tarmac incident) and probably shouldn’t have been recording but obviously they wanted the money so they kept putting out records that had a few good songs but pretty much killed their recording career after the contract was up. What it from 77-85 they had only put out 1 album when they had enough great material? I know miu wasnt on cbs but including that in the list of albums they never made would be a good idea too imho

I thought there was some talk on here about Dennis being sort of racist taking about beating up a black guy or something like that? Forget what the actual accusations were.
13  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Every Beach Boys album ranked! on: May 12, 2020, 02:49:37 AM

I do like a lot of the stuff from Still Cruisin'. Especially, "Somewhere Near Japan" and "Make It Big." I grew up with Troop Beverly Hills. Haha.

Sort of of topic but do you like Jenny Lewis? Her new album is really good
For those that don’t know she was child star of troop Beverly Hills.
14  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: What do we really know about the late 60's- early 70's Murry Wilson? on: May 05, 2020, 10:18:38 PM
It's been written Murry had diverticulitis just before his first heart attack, and IIRC that he and Dennis would watch the fights together, at times "virtually" via phone.

Yeah mike said he had several feet of his intestines removed right before he died.

I’d love to see some pics of him later in life. There’s hardly any pics of him online, in general. There’s that 1 pic of him that is everywhere and any pic besides that are rare and hard to find. I’m sure there’s lots of physical pictures in Wilson family picture albums, etc that Brian or whoever might have but hardly any online.
It’s almost surprising how few pics there are online of someone so important to musical history.

Is that his studio in the our team documentary? It looks similar but maybe a diff studio?

Side note on YouTube the our team documentary is paired with footage of them in Belgium and the part where Carl is being interviewed and talked about Brian’s musical ability and the interviewer goes “wow Brian must have a good ear” and Carl laughs incredulously and goes “uh yeah he does” always makes me laugh
16  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Kokomo: Robbie Robertson Went There First? on: April 04, 2020, 01:14:47 PM
Bruce Springsteen said he played backup for Chuck at a local show before he was famous...They didnt do any rehersals, didnt know what songs they were gonna play and chuck didnt even make eye contact with them or acknoledge them or tell them what songs were coming they just had to try and figure out what he was playing and play along...

pretty ridiculous.
17  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: First recording songs of different studios on: March 29, 2020, 01:11:42 AM
I didn’t know Dennis ended up as the sole owner of brother studios I assumed it was always him and Carl
Did Dennis lose a lot of money on the studio? Did that contribute to him being broke when he died? Or was that mostly his reckless spending/cocaine buying/divorces?
18  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: REM - At My Most Beautiful on: February 13, 2020, 05:22:44 PM
I read in an interview that Michael Stipe used the word "smile" as a reference to smile...and they put the cello triplets at the end to sound like good vibrations and the bells and stuff to sound like pet sounds and chord inversions to sound like the beach boys too....apparently stipe isnt a beach boys fan but the other guys are huge fans....i believe mills or buck wrote liner notes for....sunflower? or some other album.
19  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian Wilson / Rare 1977 Interview on: February 13, 2020, 05:18:40 PM
The DJ mentions that the kenny and the cadets record was going for "thousands of dollars"....i googled it and found this, it looks like its worth 100 or 200 now according to this:

was it really worth "thousands" back in the 70s? or was he exaggerating?

great interview tho. Interesting that he said that "Brian loves you" was approved by the other guys as a title....Of course it was changed, but i didnt know they all approved it originally

21  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Please sign petition for Beach Boys to withdraw from performing on 2/5/20 on: February 06, 2020, 11:00:17 PM
Shawn was not in charge of Dennis' estate.  The administrator of the estate was a lawyer named Shelley Surpin.

There's a ton of info about the case in these court records...

One of the court briefs mentions that the estate was negotiating with Brother Records, and that there had been speculation of a figure of $200,000 to $600,000 (though the brief rejects that speculation as "irrelevant").  So, it's not clear how much the sale of Dennis' share generated. If someone were really interested, they'd probably have to dig further into the court records.

I read that case file...pretty fascinating, had never seen it before. Thanks for posting!

I know everyone says if they voted to strip mike of the license it would be "legal hell", etc....does anyone know exactly how? I mean, from what is understood (as far as i can tell) if the voting members of BRI voted to strip the license, isnt that pretty cut and dry? They gave him the license and they could vote to take it away, right?

Of course, they would literally be voting to strip themselves of hundreds of thousands of dollars a year of free money, basically...What is the number? Something like 10 or 20 pct of his GROSS touring income? (which is partly why he has to do the 'walmart' touring method) because 10 or 20 pct of the gross gets taken off the top...Lets say he grosses 50k/show (probably more) and does 100 shows (I know he usually does 150/year or so) and its only 10 pct...thats 500k/year divided by 5 (?) members, so thats 100k/year each for doing nothing. And it's probably more, thats a conservative estimate...Not to mention he keeps the beach boys name out there which stimulates record sales, etc. So we're probably talking about 200k/year each for each BRI member. Sure he's annoying and he plays at these terrible events that Don Jr and trophy hunters are at, but to be honest ,if it were me, i'd probably take the 200k/year and just deal with i way off on my numbers?

Not to mention, how many more seats would Brian sell if he went out as "the beach boys"? i doubt very many more....His name is well know. It's Mike's that isnt, hence why he was chomping at the bit to buy the license. When he was going out as "mike love" or "california beach band" or whatever it was, he barely sold any tickets and was playing small venues, as far as i can tell.  I mean how many baby boomers want to see "Mike Love" vs "The Beach Boys"...its a huge difference. Vs How many want to see Brian Wilson vs The Beach Boys? Not a huge difference. YOu can tell because Brian plays about the same size venues as mike as sells similiar (if not more) tickets than "The Beach Boys"
23  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: This week in BB History on: January 31, 2020, 12:45:30 PM
Jan 31 1981-The BBs played at the All Arabian Horse Show in Scottsdale, AZ.  This was something Al had gotten involved in (he raised horses) and he moved to that area in the 1980s, though he eventually returned to California.

My understanding is that Al had a second home in Arizona, sharing time between there and Big Sur.

FYI, i read in an interview recently and he said where lived in AZ in the 80s (the area of scottsdale) and it's a super rural area, even now (i've lived in AZ for 25 year so know the area well). And back then it was even more so. Almost everything out in that area is big ranch homes with horses and fields and stuff. So my guess is he had a big ranch property, probably with at least a few acres of land. Maybe some horses. Just an FYI in case anyone was wondering what kind of place he had out there. I can't say for sure since I havent seen it, but thats the only reason anyone would live in that part of town, since it's pretty far out away from any cities. Far from downtown phoenix, even pretty far from downtown scottsdale.
24  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Beach Boys 2020 Tour Thread on: January 31, 2020, 12:42:25 PM
The stories about Bruce are crazy.  I mean, it's not like he's movie-star level famous where he just can't get any privacy.  I'm sure he's not hounded by screaming fans every time he goes out in public.  How hard can it be to be nice to some fans after a show?

Agreed....I'm sure he gets recognized at a BB show, but when he's just out to dinner with his family or something? I bet 90% of the time no one recognizes him...Most people dont even know what the BB look like, and the ones that do probably most of them could only recognize Mike or Brian....What pct of the population could pick Bruce Johnston out of a lineup? 3%? Less? And then what pct of that would actually go up and try and talk to/bother him in public? 10%? 20%? My point is I totally agree, I bet he goes weeks without anyone bothering him in public, besides at a Beach Boys concert, obviously....He doesnt have the right (IMHO) to be bitchy when a fan wants to talk to him...He's not Taylor Swift or Paul McCartney or Tom Cruise, etc who can't go anywhere without screaming fans. I mean, i totally understand he's just a person and sometimes he's in a bad mood, etc and doesn't want to be bothered. I hate when people say "I met X celebrity and they were a total asshole because they wouldnt take a pic with me" or something...Maybe they were having a bad day? Theyre just people like everyone else....But what does bother me is someone like Bruce who seems to be having a "bad day" a LOT of the time....
just my 2 cents
25  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: When Did the Beach Boys' Cheerleaders End? on: January 07, 2020, 05:11:24 PM
My best guess based on extant video/pics is that the cheerleaders were dropped in 1995 or 96.

Here’s a 1995 summer gig where the cheerleaders are still there:

They only appeared on select songs; one was "Kokomo", and while there isn't much footage of "regular" shows from 1996 or 97 (meaning not TV shows or the Nashville Fan Fair gig, etc.), here's a late 1997 show, November (after Carl left the road, with Al and Dave both still in the band), and there aren't any cheerleaders during "Kokomo":

As for why they were dropped, I don’t think there’s any firm indication. I would assume it was a cost-saving measure more than anything else (as opposed to Mike all of a sudden realizing it was tacky).

Interesting in the 1995 gig you linked to  theres only 2 cheerleaders. If you look at this show from 1988 in mesa AZ theres i dunno, 6 or 7? (around 52 minutes in)

Another good question is when did they start? They were from 1988 -1995? Originally with 6 or 8 and then paired down to 2 by 1995 then 0 by 1996?

If they did start in 1988 i wonder if they figured they were flush with cash from Kokomo and thats why the added them?

also, another question, did they tour with them? Or did they just hire local girls for every show? It'd obviously be a lot cheaper to hire them in every city instead of paying for hotels, etc. My gf plays violin profesionally and most of the time she plays with a big band in town (josh groban, micahel buble, etc) they just hire local people like her since its a lot cheaper and they just read the music and no one even knows theyre local
