and it doesn't seem like anyone else here's that into "Gettin' Hungry".
You mean to say you're dependent on others' opinions? Or is it an odd phrasing?

Phrased it weird, oops. What I mean is that I don't dig it, and I noticed a lot of others don't either.
3  Smiley Smile Stuff / 1970's Beach Boys Albums / Re: Sunflower on: August 24, 2014, 05:31:54 PM
5/5. A little bit too saccharine at times, but I can't fault any album with "Forever" on it too much.
Replace "Forever" with "All I Wanna Do" (my road-to-Hawthorne moment) and I couldn't agree more. :=) Same score for me too.

That one's probably my 2nd favourite!
4  Smiley Smile Stuff / Welcome to the Smiley Smile board / Hey guys on: August 23, 2014, 06:01:33 PM
Been posting here a bit, haven't made a thread here yet. Lurked here a bit when I recently went through a phase of getting really obsessed with Smile, and I missed posting on message boards, so here I am.

I'm 22 and I'm from around Edmonton, Canada (don't live in the city, but spend most of my free time there). The Beatles had always been one of my favourite bands since I started getting really serious about music (so, when I was like 12), and I decided to look for similar stuff at one point, and I ended up finding and falling in love with Pet Sounds when I was in high school. For a while I mostly just stuck with that, Sunflower, and I dug The Smile Sessions but wasn't too into it. It's only been within the last couple months that I realized just how incredible Smile is (it very well might be my favourite "album") and how great their whole run from '65-'71 is.
5  Smiley Smile Stuff / 1960's Beach Boys Albums / Re: Friends on: August 23, 2014, 05:52:51 PM
Bossa-nova is a style, and the only song on the record in that style is Busy Doin' Nothing...

but it is a perfect relaxed summer afternoon record

True. Even when it doesn't sound super Brazilian, the chord progressions on it are really unique and don't really seem to pop up much in their other work ("Passing By" and the verse on "Friends" stick out for me).

Macca and Geezer Butler are the first two that come to mind.
7  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: The Best Beatles Solo Albums. on: August 23, 2014, 05:48:08 PM
McCartney II
8  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: What song do you consider to be sonically perfect? on: August 23, 2014, 05:46:55 PM
"Big White Cloud" by John Cale
9  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Paul McCartney Interesting Collaboration on: August 23, 2014, 05:45:59 PM
Seems odd on the surface, but Yeezy's one of the few mainstream artists around who's willing to experiment, and Macca experiments more than you'd think. Yeah, he's the sappy Beatle, but he was also the first Beatle to get into Stockhausen and, well, have you heard McCartney IILOL

As a fan of both, I'm looking forward to it.
10  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Which David Bowie era is your favorite? on: August 23, 2014, 05:41:55 PM
Berlin era + Station to Station
11  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: 2014 New Releases on: August 23, 2014, 05:40:04 PM
Mac DeMarco's Salad Days and Future Islands' Singles are my two favourite albums of the year. New St. Vincent was cool too.
12  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Was the song \ on: August 23, 2014, 05:35:57 PM
The origin of the song was simply yet comprehensively described thusly: "Why isn't there a song about Johnny Carson ?"

According to some dude called... Will Brison, wasn't it ?

I can see this happening, but I can't help but hear autobiographical elements in the lyrics, espeically the lines "When guests are boring he fills up the slack, the network makes him break his back". Seems like a metaphor for Brian being promoted as the brains of the band and the pressure on him to create "genius" songs consistently to me.

13  Smiley Smile Stuff / 'Rank the Tracks' / Re: Rank the tracks #12: Smiley Smile on: August 23, 2014, 05:28:21 PM
1. Good Vibrations
2. Heroes & Villains (top 2 are too obvious)
3. Little Pad (heh)
4. Wind Chimes (I like this just as much, if not more, than the Smile version)
5. She's Goin' Bald (the "sha na na" part is simultaneously one of the funniest and creepiest things ever)
6. With Me Tonight
7. Fall Breaks and Back to Winter (a bit too repetitive, but I like it)
8. Wonderful (I like this version, but isn't anywhere near as great as the Smile version)
9. Whistle In
10. Vegetables (I've never really cared for this song, no matter which version)
11. Gettin' Hungry
14  Smiley Smile Stuff / 'Rank the Tracks' / Re: Rank the tracks #11: Pet Sounds on: August 23, 2014, 05:21:43 PM
1. Don't Talk (Put Your Head on My Shoulder)
2. God Only Knows
3. Wouldn't It Be Nice
4. I Just Wasn't Made for These Times
5. That's Not Me
6. You Still Believe in Me
7. Caroline, No
8. I'm Waiting for the Day
9. I Know There's An Answer
10. Pet Sounds (am I the only one who likes this best of the two instrumentals?)
11. Sloop John B
12. Here Today
13. Let's Go Away for Awhile

16  Smiley Smile Stuff / 1970's Beach Boys Albums / Re: The Beach Boys Love You on: August 23, 2014, 05:16:04 PM
4/5. "The Night Was So Young" and "I'll Bet He's Nice" are two of my favourite BB songs. I actually think "Johnny Carson" is underrated. I think of that song as being about Brian and the pressure on him from labels and the other members of the band. If you keep that in mind, it makes more sense. A lot of it's really cheesy, but that's something I find endearing about The Beach Boys.
17  Smiley Smile Stuff / 1970's Beach Boys Albums / Re: Surf's Up on: August 23, 2014, 05:11:02 PM
5/5. Best non-Pet Sounds/Smile album, even if it is all over the place. The rest is good enough I'm almost willing to forgive Mike Love for "Student Demonstration Time". Almost.
18  Smiley Smile Stuff / 1960's Beach Boys Albums / Re: Smiley Smile on: August 23, 2014, 05:08:26 PM
4/5, would be a 5/5 if it didn't have H&V and GV (both songs are great, don't get me wrong, but they're just really out of place imo), and it doesn't seem like anyone else here's that into "Gettin' Hungry". The rest is great though, even if it takes a while to grow on you. I think I might actually like the version of "Wind Chimes" on Smiley better than the Smile version.
19  Smiley Smile Stuff / 1960's Beach Boys Albums / Re: Pet Sounds on: August 23, 2014, 04:57:56 PM
5/5 obviously. Most lyrically relatable album ever maybe.
20  Smiley Smile Stuff / 1960's Beach Boys Albums / Re: Friends on: August 23, 2014, 04:56:50 PM
4/5. Not really that into the last couple songs. I like that this is the only Beach Boys album (that I've heard anyways) that sounds super bossa nova-y. Super chill.

I only just got into them within the last year or so, despite being a Beatles/Beach Boys/Stones etc. fan for 10+ years (I'm 22). Village Green has quickly become one of my favourite albums.

I love The Doldrums. It sounds like David Bowie, Scott Walker, Barry Gibb, and Brian Wilson (for "Among Dreams" anyways) made a really cool collaborative album, then accidentally left the masters in the sun for like a week. The other Paw Tracks stuff is neat but not as special as that record. Before Today's cool. Mature Themes is baaad ("Only In My Dreams" aside).
25  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Do you prefer SMiLE as a 3 movements piece or as 12-14 tracks? on: August 03, 2014, 07:26:44 PM
Individual tracks.
