Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Dennis Visiting and House Shopping in Hawaii - July 1967

I've said it many times including above, but something big happened to change the dynamic after the band returned from Europe in May 1967.
The currently fashionable term for what occurred in 1967 is "deplatforming." How or why that happened is up for debate (not really) but that's what it was. Deplatforming is a term from a few years ago (possibly pre-dating the alt-right being named the alt-right even) & probably out of date by now, meaning removing a platform from fascists, ie stopping them from'debating' at universities / spreading hate speech in public. Doesn't really apply to The Beach Boys becoming unpopular in late 60s America.

For the benefit of anyone else reading who doesn't know - In Bloom is?/was the band by Carl B & Just Wilson, Dennis & Carl's sons. I've seen it referred to before in passing as a grunge band. The cd's probably long out of print. Their website's gone & the version in the internet archive was last updated in 2002 (domain expired & got taken over by spammers in 2006/07) & the webstore selling their album has vanished, & Ear Candy mag's interview with carl B. & Justyn is from August 2001. Ear Candy also has a review of the album from August 2001 https://www.earcandymag.com/reviews10.htm"In Bloom "Music"-Indie Release - You don't often expect a "heavy" sound when you have melodic songs and tight harmonies, but IN BLOOM has achieved it on their debut CD. The songs are often sparse & quirky, taking you in an unexpected direction with their unique vocal arrangements. And that's what I like about this record: IN BLOOM consistently infuses hard driving, heavy guitar music with pristine, often soaring harmonies. But, I'm not talking faux Green Day guitars and harmony which every flavor-of-the-month band has picked up just to get on the latest Warped Tour! IN BLOOM displays their integrity by performing their own hybrid of heavy metal, blues, punk, ska, and groove jammin'. But, by adding their own blend of harmony, they have come up with a unique style that is hard to catagorize in the often piegeonholed world of today's rock. Some of the standout tracks include: WHITE DOG (excellent, soaring harmonies!), CRAZY 'LIL MOUSE (riff driven ska), I DON'T KNOW (begins as a kind of Sublime rip, but has a very cool middle with great harmonies), HEAVY DUTY (hardcore punk), NOT CONFIRMED (heavy song which goes off on a jamming guitar tangent), BLOOZEN'T (blues rock with IN BLOOM harmony!), TAE KWON DOE (from trippy laid back rock to super fast hardcore punk speed) and MARIO (hard driving rock with fun lyrics and cool harmonies). Sure there are a few songs that are forgettable and sound a little too much like Sublime and the Offspring. There is also a tendency on some tracks to go off on a guitar jamm (however, not too excessively). But on the whole, IN BLOOM has taken the harder road of developing their own sound, rather than sound just like what they think WILL sell! And, as a result they've come away with a memorable debut. To go to this artist's web site click here Review by GPR" discogs claims they released a mini album in 2011 but it's on bandcamp & seems to be a different generic pop-punk band/artist. https://www.discogs.com/artist/253421-In-BloomPart of the site has been archived and has music samples (needs flash) https://web.archive.org/web/20031130094956/http://www.inbloommusic.com/This older page has short mp3 preview clips - not all of the files still exist https://web.archive.org/web/20021023181426fw_/http://www.inbloommusic.com/music.htm

I thought there was some talk on here about Dennis being sort of racist taking about beating up a black guy or something like that? Forget what the actual accusations were.
Apparently Dennis used to tell people he'd been raped by a black guy. The details of the story reportedly changed every time he told it, so who knows if any of it was grounded in reality. Stupid question but is there any source for that other than an uncited footnote in Heroes & Villains (Steven Gaines)?

thread bump was trawling a newspaper archive and found this from Probe Death Of A Beach Boy Daily News New York page 4 30th December 1983 (AP) "The harbor patrol officer who found Wilson's body said the singer had dived repeatedly into the water during the day, and that might have led to his death. "When you dive a lot you can hyperventilate; you can actually black out from that," officer John Rochford said. " full article scan https://i.imgur.com/nUOzyox.jpg

Sourced from Wolfgang's Vault? https://www.pastemagazine.com/search?t=the+beach+boys&m=Audio - (Tracks mostly listed on site in month order.) Songs from: "Fillmore East (New York, NY), 06/27/1971", "Nassau Coliseum (Uniondale, NY), 05/14/1979", "Springfield Civic Center (Springfield, MA), 05/15/1979", "Spectrum (Philadelphia, PA), 04/18/1980", "Hampton Coliseum (Hampton, VA), 06/03/1980", "Great Lawn (Washington, DC), 06/04/1980," "JFK Stadium (Philadelphia, PA), 07/13/1985", "Penn's Landing (Philadelphia, PA), 07/04/1995" Not entirely sure if this is actually The Beach Boys, seems to be an updated Kingston Trio song. Disappointingly not a surprise live version of 4th of July. https://www.pastemagazine.com/articles/2012/04/the-beach-boys-4th-of-july-song.htmlhttp://www.lyricsdepot.com/the-kingston-trio/theyre-rioting-in-africa.html^ fake edit after a quick google & it's legit and otherwise known as “Merry Minuet” + looks like concerts are def sourced from Wolfgang's Vault/Concert Vault. Going by the thread below plus June 3rd & 4th 1980 are misdated 3rd and the 4th of July concerts. http://smileysmile.net/board/index.php?topic=22210.0Others tracks are "Brian Wilson - Do It Again "Jackson Hole Music Festival (Teton Village, WY), 08/17/2008" https://www.pastemagazine.com/articles/2014/01/brian-wilson-do-it-again2.htmlCarl interviewed in "11/04/1984" https://www.pastemagazine.com/articles/2014/01/carl-wilson-interview.htmlA Bruce Johnston interview from "09/03/1988" https://www.pastemagazine.com/articles/2009/07/bruce-johnston-interview.htmlPart of the set of The Grateful Dead joining in with the Beach Boys Plus the Greatest Lakes covering All I Wanna Do https://www.pastemagazine.com/articles/2015/12/03-all-i-wanna-dowav.html

They did in early in the year at some gigs and on a TV appearance on "Friday's" (great version on that show; much better than the wonky performance from the Spectrum in April), but it was dropped by May or so.
Speaking of "Goin' on" done live, someone just recently uploaded this performance on "Fridays" in much better quality than I had ever seen before: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5h62YsU1GZcOonly watched the first minute or so (need to be somewhere) I'll watch the rest later. Wow - haven't heard the original album/vinyl version (was Keepin' the Summer Alive ever released anywhere as a single?) only the Knebworth performance, but Carl's vocals on the first minute or so of TSAS here really rock.

I remember when I was a young teenager in the '90s, there was a sort of home-made fanzine that I used to get ... I'm sure the old-timers here remember it.
Anyway, I seem to recall seeing a reprint of a handwritten Christmas card that Dennis sent to the fan club ... If my memory is correct, I believe it said something like, "Thank you to all of my fans who took the time to write to me in the Dennymania newsletter", and was dated very close to the end (maybe December 23, 1983?).
Kind of interesting that Dennis was writing Christmas cards/fan letters during this period ... it's always been assumed that Dennis was sort of "out of it" at this time, but this would suggest he might have been a little more together.
Any thoughts or memories? Anyone have a scan of this card?
Donny
I was a subscriber and I've got that issue in a box in my basement...just saw it the other day. Unless someone beats me to it (and feel free to do so), I'll try and get it uploaded here. Hope it's ok to link to your thread with scan over on Pet Sounds forum, if it isn't I'll delete this. http://petsoundsforum.com/thread/2076/dennis-final-christmas-messageReally touching if sad (date looks like it could be the 23rd) Text is "Dear Chris, Please send my warmest holiday wishes to all the nice people who have taken the time to write to me in the Dennymania newsletter. Sincerely, (signature)" It may be dictated but I believe the words and feelings behind them were real.

Not music but volume one of Michael Palin's diaries mentions Mike, Al & Dennis being around before & after Monty Python's performance at The Open-air Pop Festival, Bardney, near Lincolnn England (looks like's it was The Great Western Express festival Bardney . Lincolnshire. May 26th-29th 1972 http://www.ukrockfestivals.com/gwrecollections.html - eta: The Beach Boys were the next performers.) Mike & Al were the co-organisers caravan where the Python's were meant to be having a drink & last-minute rehearsal. "Dennis Wilson of The Beach Boys came up to me and shook my hand and congratulated me, when only seven years ago I was packed in the Odean Hammersmith trying to catch a glimpse of him."

Carl was with Dennis at the Queen concert. I believe it was in Mike's book. Dennis was drunk and the members of Queen didn't want to meet him. I think it was 75 or 77.
Taylor Hawkins in Ken Sharp's new Dennis/POB book (page 286) " Roger Taylor from Queen...told me a great story. He was coming off stage at the Forum in L.A after a Queen show in1977 and this homeless-looking guy jumped all over him. Security grabbed him and he realised it's f***in' Dennis. He had the big beard and was probably wearing flip-flops. Just classic Dennis. Roger said they sat around and had a couple of drinks and spoke for 30 - 45 minutes and said he was lovely. He said he was so complimentary of the show and loved Queen and loved their harmonies. He said he was so sweet to him".

Sail On Sailor in the local old fashioned independent department store & restaurant . (They've recently switched from copyright free songs that sounds vaguely like 'current' bands, to 70s music, heard about 4 Elton John songs yesterday mixed in with some Bowie and classic rock - Supertramp & Boston etc.)
Same place yesterday heard God Only Know inexplicably in the middle of a set of Christmas songs. (went like Christmas song, Christmas song, Christmas song etc. followed by " That's not a Christmas song", back to a Christmas song, followed by "are they playing God Only Knows? " then a couple more Christmas songs before they decided to play some Queen instead.)
