"Southern California" is easily Brian's best vocal since "Love And Mercy".
He sounds like an old guy, looking back at the past.
Truly heartfelt and believable, at least to these ears.
When Brian sings about himself, it's pure gold.

oh, ok.

Wasn't it used on Cabinessence (BWPS)? I know it was used during performances of it.
Possibly used on stage?
Just throwing it out there.

I didn't see one on stage (didn't hear one, either) at the performance of BWPS in Madison, WI in 2004.

No,no...i'm talking like back in the day...that Mellotron advert has gotta be what, early '70's?

"Constant Companion" is a big fave of mine. Sounds like it would fit on a Steely Dan album.
Dennis sure had a talent for writing deep expressive lyrics using common everyday language.
The words here are so simple, yet they are so so meaningful.

How amazing is "Tug Of Love"?
How something as brilliant as that can sit on a shelf for 30+ years is just beyond comprehension.
Beautiful,bombastic and funky.

This is great just the way it is and makes me extremely hopeful for the rest of the record.
It's been a very long time since i've heard anything that good from BW. I was quite overwhelmed.

i used to give my '60's music heroes free passes on the quality of their most recent work because "hey, we're lucky to get anything at all from them". Not any more. Bob has raised his game remarkably over the course of his last three releases.

I agree that Bob's last three have been on par with some of the best work in his catalouge.  Not quite the level of Freewheelin', Bringing it all Back Home, Higway 61, Blonde on Blonde, or Blood on the Tracks, but right up there behind them.  Especially Time Out of Mind.  Damn, what a phenominal record!!!

I'd sure like Macca or BW to come out with something "right up there behind"  some of their best work.

A close examination of the big picture of Brian on the "Love You" inner sleeve reveals a blacked out pack of Marlboros between his hands.

I get the vibe that the fall tour will be heavier with new stuff-the minor league stadium tour was a shorter set, cause of all the supporting acts. Even tho' it was only about 90 mins, it was still great.

Saw him last Wednesday- he rules- go see him-just go-his band is amazing
16  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Bob Dylan's \ on: August 31, 2006, 01:20:01 PM
yeah that was unbelievable too! His band is mind blowing. Very similar to B.W. and Arthur Lee-Young hired guns that are fans and totally into the music.

Haven't heard this yet either but i totally agree to go see the Dylan show if you can. He did a balls-out Mississippi Delta Blues swampy version of "It's Alright Ma" that i'm still trying to wrap my brain around. He was THAT good.
And when he pulled out "You Ain't Goin' Nowhere" I thought i'd died and gone to heaven.

"Junior's Farm" always gets me goin'...love the driving rhythm.
Also think Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey is a masterpiece-that "Little little beaded Gypsy" part is genius.
I did'nt care too much for "Chaos" , but i probably did'nt give it much of a chance. Thing is with Macca, i expect his stuff to be great right upon first listen. Definitely unfair of me, i know.

Ahhh some love for "Tales"   THANK YOU CTA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Love Relayer , too. I put "Gates Of Delirium" right up there with their best work.

yes, and yes.
24  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Underated albums on: January 24, 2006, 02:35:06 PM
Given the fact that Something/Anything?  is so universally adored, its predecessor" Runt-The ballad of Todd Rundgren" is almost never mentioned -maybe not under rated, but certainly under valued. Some days when i listen to it,  it blows "Something/Anything? " away.

Love "Time Fades Away" , because a) it's live,  b) it took a lot of guts to play those songs to a bunch of kids expecting  "Gold Rush" and "Harvest" tunes, and c) it rocks ferociously.
