1  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: New Brian music this Friday ? on: Yesterday at 01:13:03 PM
My guess is that this wasn't a projected album as such but probably grew out of Brian just spending some time during the pandemia. Maybe he showed his kids how to play some of his songs and it went from there.

That, and the fact Decca must have seen an opportunity and made an approach as I doubt this is something Brian or Darian shopped around. It’s a bit of a no-brainer when you think about it. Artists sitting around offered a chance to do something a bit different and make a few dollars without having to leave the house. What’s not to like?
I think I said it over a year ago, but I see the industry having a bit of a ‘bump’ creativity wise of new material. I guess this is Brian’s. Not new as such, but a new concept for him.

Listening to God Only Knows. It's achingly lovely. I can't wait to hear the rest of the album. IMO it really has Brian's 'feel' to it, and I love that.

Was very pleasantly surprised listening to God Only Knows. Actually, it was incredibly moving.... if the rest of the album turns out as good and this turned out to be Brian's final album, I must say it would make for an incredibly poignant swan song

FWIW. I don’t think it’s been mentioned, but Rolling Stone have just updated their 500 Greatist Songs list from 2004.
GOKs moves from 25 to 11. 👏

Bob Dylan and Neil Young aren’t great either, but the songs, lyrics etc are the highlight.
The business needs average singers. It appeals to us who are just as average and only sing in the shower. 😅

Back now I see. Too much time listening to the FF Set and forgot to pay the bill?  LOL

A poster over at the EH Board has a source who says Brian’s people weren’t happy with the Covid protocols at the venue. Good.
8  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Would-Be Hits on: September 06, 2021, 06:49:25 PM
"Isn't it Time" could've been the 2012 version of Kokomo if only it had more modern production, a less abstract (and changing?) bridge, and FAR greater promotion. If that single had taken off, things would be very different today. I was in my junior year of high school and used to play it on my ukulele. It always brought joy to the room. They easily could've "rode the wave" that "Hey Soul Sister" had started just two years prior for summer ukulele based pop tunes, and improved it!

Heck, I'd go so far as to say it should've been the album title. What would be more fitting?

Barring some weird, off-the-wall viral moment probably unrelated to the music itself, there was no way the Beach Boys were going to get a hit single in 2012. "Isn't It Time" was one they clearly tried to push, going so far as to Frankenstein an alternate version for a single release. They obviously doomed that single even further by prepping it and releasing it at a point where the reunion was essentially already over and they were on the brink of the awful PR that closed out the reunion. Nobody cared at that point. But even if the reunion had had more legs, and "Isn't It Time" (in either iteration) had been pushed earlier, it would not have reached "hit" status. The band, like most any old band, had no presence on pop radio, and next to none even on "classic rock" radio, and really only a hand full of songs on "oldies" radio, and back in 2012 didn't have a strong presence in various digital formats.

The main angle they had in 2012 was a strong album performance (which they got with a Top 5 album), strong awards activity (which they didn't get), and strong tour performances and reviews (which they did get). Beyond that, the next most unexplored angle was things like song placements in movies, movie trailers, etc. "Spring Vacation" should have been in some s**tty comedy movie trailer back in 2012.
this

And now this week ironically an oldies act, ABBA, may have a genuine couple of Top 10 hits after 41 years. 😮
The Beach Boys have never really disappeared so a ‘hit’ was always going to be unlikely, but ABBA shows it can be done.

Really don't agree with sending Brian out on tour given current circumstances

Have said the same before, and if you want proof it’s not a good idea check out The Doobie Brothers. Less than one week into a reunion tour a fully vaccinated Michael McDonald is out with Covid.
For any older artist it’s just nuts tbh.

The recordings on FF sound great and man how they rocked on "It's about Time". It makes you want a set dedicated to their live performances of the early 70s.

And the sky hasn’t fallen down due to the lack of auto tune! (still pi$$ed about the C50 live album 👎)

What’s that Australia website? Haven’t found any link for Aus/NZ physical copies yet myself.

Edit: Just found it listed on Amazon Aust.....finally! 👏👏👏slow handclap.

For those who like a good VDPs quote. He mentions the FF period for the group in today’s LA Times.

: “These guys couldn’t get laid in a women’s penitentiary with a fistful of pardons.”

It's now live on Spotify here in Australia.

YouTube Music here in NZ as well. 👍

Not sure if it’s just NZ or zones where it is the 27th, but now officially released on YouTube as well.

I always like tracking the locations of the old pictures. The rooftop shots at Brian’s house I’ve never seen. I guess a undiscovered ‘Rooftop’ performance like the Beatles is too much to hope for. 😮

Thanks Howie. Small point though. Pretty sure that’s Al speaking at 3.38 but credited to Mike?

Edit... Just realised it’s an old interview and it is Mike. Ignore.

21  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: What if David Marks never leaves in 1963? on: August 01, 2021, 09:49:50 PM
I’ve read ‘The Lost Beach Boy’ and I think there would be the real possibility Dave and Dennis would be as destructive together as Dennis was on his own, and we all know how that turned out.

The best thing Dave did was leave IMO. It potentially saved his life given his now known health issues.

Would he have improved the music? I’ll leave that for the musicians of the board, however the quality can depend on the health of the group.
22  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Mike Love and Carl's last tour on: August 01, 2021, 06:28:52 PM
I’ll probably be knocked for quoting Mikes book, but he does cover that period.

“Carl was heroic, but if he was going to survive, he wasn’t going to do it by trooping through airports and riding buses. Toward the end of the summer, a blood clot developed in his leg, and I finally told him, You need to devote all your attention to healing.
Yes, he said, but I’ve been the backbone of this coup onstage.
That’s true, I said. But that backbone needs a chiropractor.
He nodded with a grin.”

...just saying.

New article on FF, with comments from Alan Boyd and Mark Linett:

'FEEL FLOWS' -- THE BEACH BOYS RE-IMAGINED THIS SUMMER
http://www.sunnysouthnews.com/blog/2021/07/20/feel-flows-the-beach-boys-re-imagined-this-summer/

Oh yeah.....👍

According to the producers, they hope the upcoming set does well, so they can continue creating boxes like “Feel Flows.”

“There’s still some amazing material in the vaults. We would love the opportunity to share it with everybody.”

I can't believe that tribute shows are still a thing. Especially considering that imo there aren't enough names out there anymore that I would be interested in dong their version of a Beach Boys song.

Exactly. I don’t know what a suitable acknowledgement would be today but I doubt a tribute show is it.

Including that infamous sign on the door, according to Al, read "No Beach Boys Allowed" and it was during the recording of Disney Girls.
...

Was that at Brian's house? It's amazing he didn't get kicked out right after that.

Entirely speculative, but has it ever been confirmed the intent of this sign? It wouldn’t be the first time I have seen fans take a Beach Boys incident out of context. I’ve mentioned the Knebworth ‘Cottonfeilds’ Al Jardine made us do it story before. 🙄
