Loved it - in fact watched it over the last two days.  Great to get a glimpse of Carl Wilson the man, and not the Beach Boy in some places. Just a shame the live performances of BB songs are cut before they begin. Worth the price alone for the home video footage and family anecdotes...

Second. The QVC thing will be pretty embarrassing

Brian did it to promote the Roxy album. It's not as bad as you might think -- the band won't be selling the record or anything. They will perform and answer some audience questions, most likely.
Brian was genius to perform ding dang on QVC the last time, that event showed his humor was still as funny as ever.

Is there video of this??

This is not a time for criticism, enjoy the moment.

I love it. Catchy, great vocals and a wonderful chord structure. Well done guys! More of the same please...  Smiley

Brilliant news - the best press release so far. With the bonus of MORE European dates! Great news, fingers X'd for the UK.... Grin
81  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: A bit crap on: April 21, 2012, 04:32:09 AM
This is slightly disturbing - Wirestone normally talks sense, so I can only assume he's been hanging out with Cohen for too long in recent weeks.

Car songs. - well, yeah, it's what they're known for in the mind of Joe Q. Public.

Surfin' songs. - as above, in spades.

Surfboards in promo pics. - no brainer. Not saying I agree, but... no brainer.

"Beaches in Mind." - we know the title. We know Al whistles on it. We know it's "a very cheerful song". Yup, more than ample grounds to dismiss it out of hand.

Not a single Pet Sounds song in the mini-set -- no WIBN, no GOK. - like you say, mini-set. Hell. they only played one song at the Grammys: this is going to be a complete fiasco !

"Kokomo." - yup, can't see the point of doing their biggest selling 45 and the one song most folk born post-60s associate with them. What are these guys thinking of ?

That hideous single cover. - personal opinion.

Wal-Mart. - when Brian put out TLOS with Best Buy only bonus tracks, I don't recall the wrath of God being called down upon his head.

Jim Peterik writing the lead-off single. - again, we have a title and composers: that's all, you don't know what it sounds like. Just suppose... just suppose it's actually a nice, wistful, retro ballad that isn't too shabby with vocals a la "DFTS" ? Try hearing the thing first.

Underwhelming, poorly mixed live appearances. - two, if you count the Dodger Stadium thing. Three songs.

Utterly disengaged Brian. - sometimes. Sometimes not. That's Brian. He's a trip.  Grin

Totally agreed there...

Has anyone ever thought about syncing up the Marianne Faithful internet version with the DVD and making it more "watchable"?

84  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: So what's the deal on any UK dates for 50th?? on: April 03, 2012, 07:48:24 AM
I really have got to the point of "I couldn't care less" with regards to a UK tour now - the only reason I'd be going is to see Al as I've seen the rest in concert in their various incarnations.

If they wanted to do some shows they could, if they wanna blame the Olympics / Tax issues / whatever etc for not coming then that's fine by me. I just won't be as eager to book to see them if they tour separately again.

90  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Carl on: February 20, 2012, 01:05:46 AM
Carl is a great puzzle. He also torpedoed the last attempt by Brian to produce a new record for the band (the 95 sessions). The fact that a man who willingly recorded Summer in Paradise turned down the Paley sessions material for being too weak -- well, it boggles the mind.

Well, one, there was the cancer. Two, I believe Carl didn't want to work with Don Was, he was hoping Brian would take the lead with no help, and he'd only heard the vocals with Don Was' tracks, and not Brian's and Paley's. Apparently Carl wasn't digging Was' tracks. The Boys then brought in Sean O'Hagan, but as we all know, Brian and O'Hagan didn't gel...and don't forget the Baywatch/Dancing the Night Away session...complicated.

Well, one, he hadn't been diagnosed with cancer at the time, as far as we know.

The official announcement of his cancer diagnosis was April 1997, but a lot of people who attended shows the previous year will tell you there was something very wrong with him then. I saw him spring 1996, and he looked... just wrong. Prior to that, on the January UK visit to promote the Status Quo collaboration, even on TV he looked out of sorts. I think he knew something was wrong long before it being announced.

Yeah, I've got that GMTV interview with Quo and he just looks - subdued, nervous...

Bryan McFadden - the fat one from Westlife. He got laughed at for saying that on CDUK, they also visited his home and he had Brian Wilson posters in his studio.
Lindsey Buckingham
Fleet Foxes
Paul Weller
John Frusciante
John Squire

In an interview in one of the fanzines, Jeff discussed why the Beach Boys fired him...and it had nothing to do with the "hotel tape."

Would you tell us what he said was the reason ? I never heard about it...

I've never heard about this either - can some one elaborate?

96  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: What Else Did The Beatles \ on: January 06, 2012, 07:16:55 PM
I have not read the FAQ book yet, but intend to add it to my library soon! So Penny Lane is a definite, admitted influence on a Beatles recording from Brian, we can take that one to the bank. Now, are there any other references to specific songs that have been mentioned as influences on either band, apart from Penny Lane? Just curious...we could make our own lists based on listening to the tunes but I want to know if band members have cited any specifics other than Penny Lane.
I have a little section in the FAQ book that deals with this subject...very selective, very brief, by no means definitive. But among the songs I bring up are Girl Don't Tell Me, Here There and Everywhere, Penny Lane, Back In The USSR which IMO are the obvious Beachles cross pollination examples.

And whilst we're at it we'll add "Nowhere Man" and "Paperback Writer" to the list...
