Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: What if the Beach Boys had fired Mike Love?

Had they fired Mike Love, the band would have gone to sh*t. He is the lead singer of the Beach Boys. You don't have to love him, but show some respect. I mean, put on Little Honda or Dance, Dance, Dance and hear him snarl those great lyrics like a boss he is. I don't really care if he's a dick in his person, when it comes to music he's the only one who could have done what he did. I'm a fan.

I definitely saw Brian playing the drums on Wanderer while Denny sang lead during the 1964 summer tour, so I would imagine it was true in Sacramento as well.
Thanks for clearing that up, that questions been bugging me since 2007, when I first bought the album. But yeah, just listen how effortlessly the drums swing, as opposed to Denny's (admittedly very effective and driving) clubbing. Man, what a musical guy (duh).

"But he also did a phenomenal job on I Was Made To Love Her from the Wild Honey album. He did an amazing job on that, which is a Stevie Wonder original. Carol did an incredible job on that. He could go completely rock and roll;"
I thought that was Mike confirming it was Carol Kaye who played bass on IWMTLF, as a quick aside! Oh well.

Wow. That was like a parody of a typical Mike interview, I mean he's really overdoing his thing here.
"I did the chorus (sings) “I’m picking up ‘Good Vibrations’’ and I wrote all the words and I came up with that musical part too on the chorus but Carl did a beautiful job on the lead."
Of course, truer words never spoken, I guess, but you know what I mean. Nothing against the man, though!

Considering how much religion has caused suffering in this world, a song called God Only Knows should be banned. Also, the song features a prominent French horn part, and back in the days French horn was used to signal hunters - by choosing to use that particular instrument, the song's arranger promotes cruelty towards animals. Disgusting song.

I'll exclude Love You -songs because in my opinion it's a perfect album and I could easily fill the top ten with it.
1. Goin' On -Well, the production may not be 10/10, but I think the actual song is great.
2. Some of Your Love -It rocks and it's catchy, it's the Beach Boys!
3. Kokomo -A stone cold classic
4. Still Cruisin' -This one has really grown on me over the years.
5. Lady Lynda -Al's finest hour as a songwriter. A perfect gem. That cembalo!
6. Good Timin'
7. My Diane
8. Rolling Up To Heaven
9. Stevie
10. TWGMTR

Just listened the whole album for the manyteenth time. It definitely is a grower, new highlights keep popping up. It already is the BW solo album I've listened the most. As some have already pointed out, Tell Me Why is an absolute classic, right up there with Brian's 60's work. The way the song gets air under its wings just before chorus... Goosebumps!
There's only one song I actively dislike, and it's Sail Away. Pointless refererences to earlier maritime hits are tacky, and the chorus is just a tae too much faux-shanty. It wouldn't be out of place on Al's solo album, though. That kind of cheery vibe, you know?

So, there's not a single track on NPP that doesn't have some kind of connection with that past, or doesn't hark back ? I like the album a lot, more each time I hear it (track 4 excepted) but to me one of its graces is that it's, essentially, Son Of TWGMTR.
What do you have against On the Island? It's beautiful? Where is your heart?

A Day in the Life and Strawberry Fields are artistically just as good as Surf's Up, and hit single -wise, they're even better.
But after those two, Beatles in -67 didn't produce anything as great as HV, Cabinessence or Wonderful.
When it comes to silly but enjoyable ditties (Vegatables, Lovely Rita), I'd say it's a tie. Although I do enjoy BB's songs more.

there's even a recent interview with Darian where he refers to Brian and the other Beach Boys as "hicks" from Hawthorne. it's really disappointing.
I don't he meant that to be taken negatively, I'd say he was complimenting them. You know, they WERE hicks from Hawthorne, meaning they weren't Hollywood-hipper-than-thou-snobs, just blue-collar boys from a decidedly unglamorous town, and despite that they made it very big and created some of the most amazing music ever created. Go Hawthorne hicks, you showed 'em!
