Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian with Jeff Beck Fall Tour Dates

Last night was a very unique Beach Boys expierience. When it was announced that Blondie would be making a few dates, but Boston was not one of them I was really bummed. Well lo and behold, Brian begins to introduce "one of my favorite singers from the 70's" and out walks Blondie to rip into SOS, well that was it for me. He really jammed on it like it was 1973 and he stayed out and tore up Wild Honey. 4 Beach Boys on stage was pretty exciting, after what has gone down. As I and others have said, Brian was in very good form last night, very engaged. I was really hoping for 'Til I die, but we got WH instead I guess. I am not familiar at all with Beck, but I really enjoyed his set. The guy is a monster talent. As mentioned, Al kept it clean with the White Suit. When he was introducing Ol Man River/Cottonfields he actually mentioned the new box set. Additionally, about half way through the set, he explained that they used to do Their Hearts Were Full of Spring, but that "we just recently started doing it again, well, what's left of us". An obvious reference of what's going on with M&B, and the crowd gave a nice round of applause at that comment. I'd obviously wish they were all back together, but barring that it was good to see them all this year, even if it was two seperate shows. If you are on the fence on seeing this show, don't pass it up.

FANTASY MIKE LOVE: It's like when I had a heart to heart with Cousin Brian over ending the reunion. I said to him... Cousin Brian, Well... its been building up inside of me for oh I don't know how long. I don't know why but I keep thinking something's bound to go wrong. It was time to get alone. Guess I'm dumb.
He tried to tell me don't worry, baby... don't talk, put your head on my shoulder. But I know there's an answer. I looked over at Bruce and whispered: let's go away for a while. All summer long, Bruce. We'll run away, Bruce. As Bruce started to celebrate the news, Brian's eyes got watery as he asked me when we'd work on another album. God only knows, but i'm sure there will be plenty of the proverbial "Good Vibrations" when we do! Wonderful.
I know we'll all play together together again because family is family and there's a lot of love in this music. It'll be a great day when it happens and I'm waiting for the day. I know we'll "do it again." ... and your dream comes true! It'll always be in the back of my mind. Que sera sera. Surf's up!
Fantasy Bill Jackson: 'I've never heard of Mike Love, and I don't surf."

Booklet, tracklisting for Disc Three: anyone know where the photo of the boys was taken? Given the limestone pavement they're stood on and the nature of the walls in the valley so deep and wide behind them, I'm guessing it just might have been the Yorkshire Dales during a UK visit but who knows? Anyone? Edit: found it on line but no further details: Edit: this is almost certainly from the same day: Looks like the same clothes, but if it was the same day, Bruce shaved his mustache

A friend of mine sent me an email with a cool BW story from when he lived in LA (maybe 10 years ago?) ... he's not a die-hard Beach Boys fan, but appreciates their stuff casually:
"Brian Wilson -- I was sitting on a bench in a park in beverly hills writing in my journal and he was sitting on a bench adjacent to me watching birds. I thought about saying something for twenty minutes then he muttered something about the birds. Smile and nod was the best I could do."
Would have been really cool if the bird flew away and Brian dozed off.

Bruce was prancing around so much that at one point my wife asked me if he was gay. I said, no, he's Republican. Ah another post of the year candidate here my friend. Never miss an opportunity to ridicule your opposition, its the Alinsky way eh? Wasn't ridiculing Bruce or Rebublicans (of which I am one). Just goofin' around a little. No harm meant.

Went to see Mike Love's Historical Travelling Beach Boys last night in Hampton Beach, NH. First off, this was my first M&B show. I stopped going to shows after Carl died (although I did see Brian solo). Like a lot of people, I had a problem with Mike calling his outfit the Beach Boys, but after last year's shows, and all that's gone on, I figured I should at least check them out, as they aren't going to be around forever. I will say that I was very impressed. I think last night's show was as good, if not better than many shows I saw in the 80's and 90's. Mike was in good form, and Bruce was too, although he didn't sing too many leads. Bruce was prancing around so much that at one point my wife asked me if he was gay. I said, no, he's Republican. During the intro of Be True to Your School, Mike went on about how the song came out in 1963, 50 years ago, and that "Uncle Jesse" would be turning 50 in a few months. I will tell you that as soon as he mentioned Stamos' name the place erupted, and if he would have walked out on stage at that point the roof would have come of the place. Very strange. I didn't quite take to Christian Love immediately, but he started to (almost) win me over by the end of the night. I didn't write down the set list but from previous ones I've seen listed, some differences were that they dd Good Timin' and Warmth of the Sun last night. I had not heard the BB's ever do Summertime Blues and I thought that was especially good. I was hoping for Wild Honey in the encore and they did. That number was absolutely scorching! Cowsill also knocked it out of the park on Darlin'. I would tell you that if you've stayed away from M&B because they bill themselves as the BB's, you should consider changing your mind and going to see them. They put on a great show. As good as last year? No, but very good.

BAD management team = Brian's management team. I would hope they're not using Al in that way. Not after the way Brian has treated Al over the years, including refusing to speak to him at the Hawthorne wall dedication and firing him from a BW solo tour earlier in the decade. I would at least hope it's just Al speaking for himself and not under anyone's orders.
You didn't hear? Melinda actually married Al as well and makes all of his decisions for him. It's one of those modern California arrangements, so we can blame her for that too. What is this fascination that some fans have with "making Brian responsible for his actions" ? There's a slow process where you start resembling your favorite Beach Boy. It starts innocently enough... a beard begins to sprout, say. Baseball cap material forms on your scalp and bursts through the skin. Or maybe you find yourself behind a big fake piano, the corner of your mouth starting to curl upwards and to the side. Or you start wearing white suits and idly wondering which folk songs need covering. Maybe you just find yourself during quiet moments festooning fingers with precious jewels and pointing at random people. You identify. This sh*t is PERSONAL! All along, you insist you're objective, fair, reasonable. Seeing all sides. From your DEAD MIKE LOVE EYES!

...It's Over Now, I Just Wasn't Made For These Times, and The Night Was So Young on the boxset tour in 1993.
None of those songs were performed in the Atlanta '93 boxset show. I was there and took setlist notes. I was at the Brandeis University (Massachusetts) show and they didn't play those either. I don't have the new book yet, but which box set shows did they play those songs at? Edit: Ok, I reread a prior post and said November 21. I beleive the show I saw was a week later

This is by FAR my favorite track on the 1985 "Beach Boys" album. Why it never got the PR it should have is beyond me. Maybe AGD can clarify on this? I personally think it would have been a GREAT single and hit. I think it's totally rad

I read in Wiki article of Mick Jagger that his father Joe died at age of 93. Good to see that Milton outlived him. Belated Happy Birthday to him hoping he'll reach 100 mark. Great writing from Mike as well! Wirestone is otm, he should definitely publish an autobiography.
