201  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Audio fidelity on the Reverberation -> Sunflower cuts on: June 04, 2014, 09:06:08 PM
So nice to see these types of issues discussed. I have gotten really interested in this aspect of the boys material. I read that Andrew Sandoval was told by Mark L. to no-noise Forever and several tracks on Surf's Up for the 2000 re-releases. Mark, if you reading this, can you tell me if that is true?

Also, was WAS up with the initial version of Surf's Up used on the Caribou re-issues and the GV boxset. I heard bleedover from some other track. In 2000, another tape was suppose to have been used, but over the weekend, I ripped this version to my PC and played the track up loud, and tho not as in your face as before, I swear I still here what sounds like talking on the left channel.

Also, that Bellagio 10452 site is SO over rated. There are only dates and times on the sessions, no second by second info on the sessions. What a rip-off!!!

Of course I am kidding Mr. Doe. Such a tremendous site I can't stand it. Always pull it up just to read. If I ever have to wait anywhere, I just pull that up. Love it!!

The backing vocals session for "Please Let Me Wonder" comes to mind.
I was just thinking about that... That "Do You Wanna Dance" / "Please Let Me Wonder" tape was one of the first set of outtakes to make the collector's circuit. There are still some elements on that tape that have never surfaced -- such as Dennis' doubled lead on "Do You Wanna Dance" (Mark's recent remix used artificial double tracking and Pro Tools copying of repeated lines like "Do you wanna dance" and "Oh oh baby, do you wanna dance").

Lee
And alot of the times, Brian would add the double to the lead while it was all mixing down to mono. In other words he would get the mix the way he wanted it, then play it back going to mono and have someone sing live while the mix was going down to mono. So no mutiltracks of that vocal.

I should have said ALMOST all out there.

Alot of it is on the DA Rarities/ODEON Landlocked/Get The Boot/All This Is That/Alternate Love You (Brian Loves You).

But I am sure no where near the quality of these discs.

After hearing more from Klay about what is actually on these CDs, this is all already OUT THERE  Wink. Thanks Klay!

I am sorry. The most cringe worthy TV appearances? Good Morning America December 1980 and live at the Queen Mary, July 5, 1981. Hands down.

These discs getting out reminds me of when a BB collector was selling a bunch of promo stuff from the 80's & 90's Capitol stuff. He was just selling stuff he got by working for Cap. I got some great stuff (photo wise etc) for almost no money. He just wanted to dump it. Sounds like the same here. Back in 1979, a CBS rep came up to me at the radio station I was working at. You want this advance copy of Americathon I have? Sure. When he came back to give it to me, he handed me 5 promo copies of LA as well. Just depends who it is working as the promo guy. The good thing for me about the BB not getting radio play in the 1980s? Whenever BB stuff came into the station? Take this home with you. We aren't going to play it Smiley.

A good friend of mine was talking with a rep from Cap in 2001. Told this rep he liked the BB. Rep said just a minute. Came back wiht promo's of all the Brother and Capitol 2 fers. Here you go!

I so want to hear the track "Alan Boyd accidentally erases Good Vibrations vocals"!!! Cheesy

I only heard it the once, about a decade ago: as I recall it's about four and a half minutes long and consists of one long - maybe ninety seconds - banshee wail of "SHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIITTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT !!!" followed by a short silence then maybe three minutes of a strange thumping noise, which I've been told was a head repeatedly hitting a desk. Personally, I'd leave it in the vault.

Honestly, I thought it was one of those Zeppo Wilson reels.

I still get residual headaches thinking about it.

Alan, I don't know how to tell you, but the Zeppo Wilson tape from the Help Me Little Honda sessions is now making the rounds. The one where Zeppo says, "Fellas, I have 2956 words for you. Quit screaming and stop singing when you fart......Brian, I am generous too, Let me give you some money...." Sorry to tell you this, but wanted to make you aware.

The difference is that when PS was ready for release, Mike had come around. Also, Brian was more stable. By the following year, Brian's emotional problems had taken over, along with other issues.
209  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brother Re-Issues: Proposed Bonus Tracks on: May 22, 2014, 05:17:50 PM
I have a compilation CD that was done by Rhino for the re-release of  Brian's first LP with bonus tracks. It says "All selections are from rough sources only and in no way reflect the quality of the final product." So if he is faking, its pretty good. Mine is official product.

Did a quick review. The tracks marked with a red X have made the rounds. But there are still some nice tracks that haven't. Good Find!!

Everybody want a good laugh? I got my replacement CD in the mail from Universal. I ripped open the package and BAMM......the envelope was empty! That sucked!

We told Emi about this and they found there was a problem with the manufacturing of disc 3 and are repressing the disc. They will replace the defective discs , and I expect them to announce how to get the replacement soon.

For the record I merged this thread with Bob's thread from today since they both deal with the same issue.

Thanks, I didn't see the other one until too late. I posted to Capitol's Facebook page and then I put a review on Amazon saying amazing box set, BUT DON'T buy it until they fix disk 3 (of course I said what the issue was). I will probably hear back from AMAZON before I do from Capitol.

Yeah I know we can fix it, but as rab2591 said, for the money we paid, there ought to be some control.
216  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / MIC - Capitol Records, your quality control methods SUCK!! on: September 18, 2013, 07:25:38 AM
How the hell do you let something like the marred disc 3 of MIC go out. 2 seconds of dead space before each track? Surf's Up cuts off before the end. Wasn't ANYONE doing any kind of quality control? Or was this simply slammed together and screw the consumer? Mark, Alan and Dennis put in alot of hard work on this, and their crappy mastering ruined it. Some may say oh its just a mistake, but you don't make those kind of mistakes on a high end retail item the you are asking people to pay out the wazoo for. We sure know where we as fans stand as far as the label is concerned.

217  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Sound Of Free on MiC on: August 31, 2013, 12:28:19 AM
Does this sound to anyone else like it was dubbed from disc and not from a master tape. I hear alot of vinyl artifacts.
218  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: MIC modern reconstuction. on: August 29, 2013, 10:50:01 AM
I still don't understand why the California Saga 45 version can't be somehow salvaged. A mint copy can sound really good with the right transfer.

No need - the master is perfectly OK. The 45 mix is on Best Of The Brother Years. I think someone just screwed up.

Alan and Mark have both expressed their preference of the LP versions of both Cal. Saga and RNR Music (and Its Ok for that matter). The only mix I really really don't like on the new box is "It's A Beautiful Day". But you know what? We have TYOH, Endless Harmony (for Sail Plane Song) etc. So it doesn't really matter. Pick your mix and go!

220  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The Beach Boys in 1981 - What were they thinking? on: August 19, 2013, 05:30:12 AM
I was 22 at that time and got to witness the Beach Boys at close range (backstage). I asked Bruce later why did you guys let Brian sing Dont Worry Baby? Bruce said what do you mean? It's Brian's song!

There was a group of us fans at the time that thought they were trying to shame Brian into straightening up. As I got older, what really upset me about this time is that the group, for the first time, didn't give a damn about there fans. Ohterwise, they would have stopped and regrouped. But they just plowed on. Also, it was around this time Mike declared bankruptcy, so that played a factor I am sure.

How does someone who was earning Mike's kind of money end up bankrupt?

Here is how:

The lawsuits, divorces, and Mike's extravagant life-style toppled him financially. In 1983 he filed for a Chapter 11
bankruptcy in the Central District Court of California. Among other debts Mike claimed $48,000 in taxes owed to the California
State Franchise Tax Board; a $100,000 loan secured against his properties in Santa Barbara and Incline Village; and at least
fifteen loans from various banks. Total debt to creditors holding security was $2,854,767. In all there were over a hundred
unsecured creditors, including exterminators, his answering service, his dentist (to whom he owed $28), and a telephone
bill for $1.16 from Nevada Bell. With the addition of several hundred thousand dollars in legal fees owed for divorces and
sundry lawsuits, the grand total came to $2,462,737.80 for unsecured debts to creditors.

In court papers Mike claimed immediate debts payable totaling $163,671.77. In a declaration by Pamela Ann Caughill,
his bookkeeper since August 1983, she stated, "Mr. Love has financed his lifestyle by extensive borrowing. All of the
properties he owns are fully mortgaged, and as a result, he has substantial monthly obligations. His monthly loan obligations
presently total $22,765.59... and his total monthly obligations are in excess of $50,000." Pamela Caughill said, "Mr.
Love's present financial circumstances are, to say the very least, desperate."

Ian, I told Jon that I had some stories about the guys in their stops here in Houston in the late '70s early '80s. I put one up here on this site. I will put it here again:

Reflections of their February 12, 1981 show - The Summit, Houston TX [w/ Randy Meisner & The Silverados]

I always feel like a broken record with this story. But it made a huge impact on me. I spent the first 30 mins in the lobby talking with Sterling Smith (one of their touring keyboardists). He was from Columbus Ohio and knew a friend of my brother's from the Columbus music scene. Al Jardine was friendly. Bruce was good. Dennis was Dennis. A good friend of mine who knoew Dennis told me how to act with him. If he challenges you (throwing the LP across the lobby), you just confront him back. Want to hear something so weird? I was so calm around these guys, like I knew them all my life. Bobby F. was nice too.

I remember Brian coming down in the glass elevator because my girlfriend pulled on my shirt and pointed "Is that him? My God Bob!"

I just shook my head and said hi. Brian ignored me cause he was too busy noticing Dennis being back. "Hey Bri, sign this guy's LP. He's alright." Then I handed Brian the lead sheet for Still I Dream Of It and it stopped him dead in his tracks. "Where did you get this??" I got it from BRI. Alan was like "What is it a lead sheet for? Still I Dream Of It? Man, great tune Bri!" I said you should release it (I had heard it by then from a dub of Adult Child). Brian shook his head and said no, the song sucked. He signed it and left for the bus....in 20 degree weather barefoot. Alan said "Not again...man."

I always got the feeling that Alan Jardine was a man with a broken heart when it came to the group.

In all of this talk about Zeppo Wilson, even Alan Boyd weighing in, we should all be ashamed that we have been so remiss as to forget the fogotten one, Gummo Wilson. We should be ashamed indeed.
