Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian's falsetto - these days 2014

Someone posted a video recently (on here but I can't remember where) of Brian on some radio show. They start playing the studio version of Surfer Girl, Brian sings the opening few lines in perfect unison with his younger self and for those brief few seconds life was just fine. Beautiful stuff.

Man having seen it for the second time in Edinburgh on Thursday it just gets better. I picked up on little nuances in the performances I didn't the first time, there are a few brief moments when the thought of Cusack playing a part left my mind and I could've sworn it was Brian up on that screen. Having seen it twice now I think Dano gives more of an 'immediate' performance but Cusack's is more subtle and will take a few viewings to fully sink in and be appreciated.
If anyone here is able to get themselves to Edinburgh on Sunday the Odeon on Lothian Road is showing L&M at 6pm as it's the last day of the International Film Festival.

He said that he was after Seth Rogen to play 70s Brian...
Oh, man, how grateful we all should be that this plan never came to pass! He didn't say that. He was coy about giving a name but mentioned the late Philip Seymour Hoffman as someone who he'd thought about for 70s era Brian. What a film though. Really moving with great performances all round and the sound design with all the different fragments of harmonies and voices really needs to be experienced with a multi-speaker setup.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Would YOU buy a Mike Love Solo box set?

Back on the board after a year of being laptopless! Granted a Love solo box would contain lots of guff but the guy has turned out some real musical curiosities that are worth a listen. I used to have most of his unreleased stuff and Viggie is indeed a gem. If anyone has had success in finding Summertime Cruisin' I'd like to meet them, I've been after that one for years now!

That falsetto he is doing in the main part of the chorus of Private life of Bill & Sue is breath-taking. To me, it has that same umm, brokenly beautiful modulating moment that he invented on Dont worry baby. i don't know how else to try and describe it. Just dumb-founded at its greatness. "california to mexico" is Jeff. The oohs are Bruce, to these ears. That's how I hear it aswell.

Any chance "Louie's looking out the rear window" is Brian's dog?
I've always understood it this way. Does anyone know for a fact if he already had Louie back then? Yes, and he didn't. So... you're wrong. When did Banana and Louie pass away AGD? I've always wondered that and can't remember reading it anywhere. Always thought Chug-A-Lug was a bit early for it to be about Louie the dog mind so that's cleared that up. Banana was still alive in late June 1971. Best I can do, sorry. Ah right thanks anyway.

This is NOT an entirely dreadful album, as a Beach Boy detractor and possible Mike Love bigot stated.
It's very listenable and as rewarding an experience as any 'recent' Beach Boys product. It does rock, which is more than can be said for the current album.
Every time I think someone has made the most retarded statement ever, someone steps up to the plate and knocks it out of the ball park. That was rude and uncalled for. Sorry to have upset you delicate sensibilities, I'm just sick of idiotic statements on this board. I'm with Paulos on this.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Will you go and see Mike's Beach Boys after the 50th Anniversary tour ends?

I'll always go and see them if they play Manchester or Liverpool. If they play elsewhere in the UK I might if I had some spare cash, if it was convenient and/or they were doing interesting sets.
The five times I've seen the Mike/Bruce band(s -- there were four different line-ups) have ranged from a relatively nice fun time to some of the best gigs I've ever seen. It's two people from a band I love, plus some great backing musicians, playing some of the best songs ever written. Why wouldn't I go?
Andrew , exactly my feelings I'll add a "me too" to Andrew's post. I'll add a me three. I'd go see any of the principle members if it was convenient for me. The 2008 Mike, Bruce and David show I seen in Edinburgh was right up there with any Brian show i've seen. If Al had brought his show over here i'd have went to that too.

If anything it shows just how great Mike and Brian's voices were back in the day. Like a lot of BB soundalike songs from that time the lead sounds really dated and the falsetto never seams to soar in quite the same way Brian's did. If you listen to Mike's leads on stuff like I Get Around it still sounds really fresh and vibrant even today. I am not a Mike Love bigot, like so many here, but in all honesty, to me, his voice sounds congested and weak. He gets there, but I wouldn't call it vibrant. Oh you contrarian you!

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Could someone brush up The Beach Boys on Wikipedia?

Don't even bother. The people who maintain those wiki pages are incredibly uptight about changes. I don't know who does, but I've tried to correct a few glaring errors on there from time to time and had some moron edit it back every time.
Yeah I had that problem too. There's the Neil Young quote from the Brian Wilson On Tour dvd when he says something about Brian having the band retarding every once in a while and this guy kept changing it to recording. I mean it doesn't sound anything like recording!

Not strictly. It's Mike Love, Bruce Johnston and David Marks of the Beach Boys saluting NASCAR. A strange release, entirely dreadful but strangely listenable if you're in the right sort of mood. I don't know what's dreadful about it. It's a fun little early 60s style song. I prefer PS and post PS Beach Boys, but even so, this is an enjoyable if throwaway rock and roll song. Nah I was talking about the record as a whole. Little GTO is probably the highlight and as someone else stated that's only cos it's a song they'd never recorded before and as you say it is a fun song.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Good Timin' ? :/

That's a harpsichord on "Good Timin'". At least that 's what the track sheets say (for both the original 16-track tape & the transferred 24-track tape). No synthesizers noted. The other keyboards are acoustic piano, organ & Fender Rhodes (the latter added at the 24-track stage, probably by Bruce).
Thanks c-man that's some great info there.

1. From There To Back Again - it didn't immediately hit me but the way Al sings 'wonderful' brings the hairs on my neck up! 2. Pacific Coast Highway - Essentially brief, the heavy sounding chords at the start remind me of Dennis. 3. Summer's Gone - The song itself doesn't really go anywhere but somehow it's entirely magical and that ending with the rainfall...man! 4. Isn't It Time - Vibrant, catchy, retro cool. The only thing i'd change is Brian's vocal on the first verse. 5. Shelter - Think I might prefer the verses to the chorus. Superbly composed song. 6. Strange World - Another cracker, the synth sounds remind me of The Who a little bit. 7. That's Why God Made The Radio - Great comeback song, the harmonies in the chorus knock me out. 8. Private Life of Bill and Sue - I love this one, the backing vocals in the chorus are a bundle of fun to sing along to. A missed opportunity lyric wise though, could have taken more of a swipe! 9. Daybreak - Lovely stuff from Michael. I had heard this one before but somehow it just fits on this album, it's light stuff but Mike sounds great on it and Christian's vocal is a nice nod to Carl. 10. Think About The Days- Lovely but would fit better after PCH. 11. Beaches In Mind - I like it a lot but the title just annoys me. 12. Spring Vacation - Wah I used to like this one as a stand alone track but with the rest of the album that horrid autotune on Brian's voice just grates and so does that Good Vibrations line after the third listen. Excitations might even have worked better! A shame because it is insanely catchy.
