1  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian Wilson - 2018 Tour Thread on: April 13, 2018, 11:28:47 AM
I've seen M&B at racecourses a few times (York and Epsom) and I'd say it's definitely more their thing than Brian's (a higher chance of Hawaiian shirts and beach balls).

Regardless this is the closest to home I've seen a BBs-related concert (due to the cancelled arena tour of 2015) so I'll be there. I'm hoping it won't be a PS show, as mentioned it's not the best environment for it and after seeing the band do PS in 2016 and 2017 I'm pretty content and hope to hear something different.

setlist.fm lists a performance of Strange Things Happen at The Palace of Auburn Hills, Auburn Hills, MI, on November 22, 1993

If I remember correctly Eric's site mentions that Al sang a line or so in response to a request.

Saw this advertised a couple months back, will definitely be there.

Does anyone have the May 31st setlist?

Two brilliant gigs into a tour with some great, pleasant surprises so far and all that goes on is more and more bitching and moaning from the same posters. Smile Brian's so clearly pushing an agenda yet tries to shrug off any attempt at calling him out as coming from a "kokomaoist". It's not the difference in opinions that irks me but the sheer toxicity with which he and others do it. Just STFU and enjoy the music and don't judge a live concert based on a cellphone video (this reeeeeaaaalllly should not have to be said as often as it is -- it's common sense).

But then again it's Mike and nothing he does will ever be good enough for some people. I'm looking forward to the May 31st show, gonna be my 3rd and final BB's show of the tour and it promises to be special. Probably not gonna bother checking in here afterwards because it's become a joke seeing the pettiness from the same children over and over again.

I've added a setlist up at setlist.fm but it's quite rusty, probably missing a few. Did notice some odd things too like how Sail On, Sailor was played very late on. Plus it's the first time I've ever seen the Boys do a one song encore. They really went all out and played as much as they could! More than makes up for the £100 taxi journey.

They also did All I Wanna Do. My jaw was on the ground. Farmer's Daughter too.

Plus another hat and some flip flops. The Summer Days shirt looks real nice.

If I can coordinate my coach arrival time and hotel check-in time I'll be there with bells on!

Daniel Amos - Broken Ladders to Glory

Had BibleLand and Songs of the Heart around my brain for the past few days but this song is easily the most entrancing.

Row D in Leeds, over the moon with that :D This'll be the closest show to home for a BB's/BW ever for me, can't wait.
12  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: 'The Beach Boys' Live.... on: February 21, 2015, 04:39:27 PM
I've seen M&B four times and every time I've absolutely loved it, and I'm the kind of person that goes to a gig for the music not just to drink and get rowdy. That said every time I've seen M&B so far has been at a racecourse or festival so I'm super excited to the upcoming theatre venue tour. I'll be at Sheffield too, Rentatris, (and also Manchester and the 2nd RAH date) which I'm the most excited about. Sheffield is my 2nd home city and it'll be the closest to home turf I'll ever have seen the 'Boys.
13  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Mike and Bruce Tour 2015 on: January 13, 2015, 07:28:16 AM

Also Sheffield, extra RAH date (really!), Birmingham. Biggest  UK tour in a while?

Will be adding Sheffield and Manchester to my already crowded gig itinerary for late May, which already includes the 2nd night at RAH. Double-booked for the 28th but I'll be damned if I'll miss the BB's in my second hometown (sorry Hozier, maybe some other time).

Very sad news. Saw all the tributes and it was very nice to see people sharing their thoughts.

RIP Rick

A healthy band (I say that because there's an apple on Darian's piano):

The cake's with Brian
Cheesy

Jeff is back! And he brought duct tape. Grin

That's one of Neil Young's roadies, it's funny cos I've seen him on tour and thought the same thing LOL

Also "interesting" is that Darian and Scott are playing Neil's piano and organ.

I've been following (and enjoying) this guy since his first album about 14 years ago, but his new album may just be his best yet. This is hook-laden crunchy pop music of the highest order with amazing production. Early XTC comes to mind listening to the new single Bad Law:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hkyUKXdFw_E

I've loved Lerche's work for a few years and everything he's released from the lushly-orchestrated pop to the twitchy-sugary pop-rock stuff and everything in between. Very much looking forward to getting my hands on this album even if Bad Law took a few listens to get into. Will be seeing him live for the first time at the end of this month too.

Listening to my recent acquisitions:
Failure (2014 Reissue) - The Posies
lullaby and … the Ceaseless Roar - Robert Plant
Worldwide and the Acoustic EP's - Everything but the Girl
Old Ramon - Red House Painters

And the odd track or two by Modest Mouse, Jens Lekman, The War on Drugs and Spain.

There was definitely a disparity between the attendance at the two I was at (Epsom and York) but I didn't think it was that much, even taking into account the non-concert-going clientele.

Red House Painters / Sun Kil Moon

Yes, a million times. Obsessed over "Ghosts…" for a long time before moving onto the rest and each release blew me away and still does. Seeing Koz next week in London.

I know I've posted in this thread before but for comparison at the moment I'd say it's a tie: RHP/SKM, a-ha, Prefab Sprout, Tears for Fears, Neil Young.

In preparation for two Neutral Milk Hotel gigs I'm getting lost in In the Aeroplane Over the Sea again and falling back in love.

John Denver should be a part of every well rounded evening.

Gonna have to agree wholeheartedly. The opening bars of "Annie's Song" or "Fly Away" just make me forget my worries and put me in a good place.

A Song's Best Friend - The Very Best of John Denver
Ambient 1/ Music for Airports - Brian Eno
Extraterrestrial Live - Blue Oyster Cult

Quite an evening.

Fun, Fun, Fun in York with Roy Wood

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IdGHKu_fAms
They also apparently covered The Move's "Fire Brigade".

That was the surprise of the night and got a great reception from the crowd, as did pretty much everything. Overall a much more enthusiastic crowd than I've ever seen at an M&B show; first time I've ever seen the band here up north (or anywhere else other than in/around London) and the crowd ate everything up; made the crowd at Epsom last week seem downright dour in comparison Razz

Odd you should say that - the Epsom crowd around me (roughly halfway back to the light tower/mixing desk, just in front of the bus) were going apeshit, yet a friend tells me that further forward, they were indeed metaphorically sitting on their hands. Go figure.

Yeah up-front it was a pretty austere affair. Hardly any noise made during the opening to Do It Again and the band coming on. Seemed very strange.

Saw him in London and Liverpool over the weekend. Absolutely stunning. Looks like the Cork audience got more songs than both of the shows I went to but the set lists were no slouches at either. My only gripe about both was playing both "Love and Only Love" and "Love to Burn" so close to each other (let alone in the same show!). And now looking at the Cork setlist I'm once again robbed of hearing "Red Sun", so close yet so far.
