126  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Wondermints Present Smile? on: January 23, 2013, 02:09:58 AM
The Wondermints are superb - check their albums out, they're far more than BB's impersonators and have so many more influences. One of the finest alternative pop bands (for want of a better description) ever. And their alt-rock cover of Abba's "Knowing Me, Knowing You" (not an "A-haa" in sight) is excellent !
127  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: After 50+ years, what's the final verdict on Mike Love? on: January 20, 2013, 01:42:36 AM
Verdict on Mike Love : anyone who's been a Beach Boy their entire adult life is bound to have one or two issues.  Smiley

Thought I recognised Not Now Music - I have their 2-cd Robert Johnson : The Complete Collection, a perfectly serviceable and budget priced collection of everything he ever recorded.

Very fond of Two Lane Blacktop, a great cult road movie...
132  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Is The Beach Boys '85 Underrated? on: December 20, 2012, 11:14:18 PM
Like It's Getting Late, Maybe I Don't Know, She Believes In Love Again and why California Calling wasn't released as a single is beyond me...the presence of Ringo and the obvious vintage-style verging on pastiche Beach Boys sound would surely have had Mr Love foaming at the mouth to make it a hit !

Don't understand the love for Getcha Back, though, and the rest of the album sounds like filler...
133  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Carl Wilson Prototype Rickenbacker Guitars - Very Rare, W. Photos + History on: December 11, 2012, 02:04:44 AM
Wow, these look great, the body shape reminds me a little of Veleno aluminium guitars. Don't suppose Rickenbacker have a custom shop that would consider doing a limited run of these ?

Really, the book isn't that bad until you get to the first appearance of Landy - and then for the rest of the way it just flat out insults the reader's intelligence.
One of the most insulting things I've seen regarding this book is the reprinted edition with the cover highlighting Carl's face as the book's subject...the horror !

Very good article, wonderful recollections of Dennis !

Unbelievable...as AGD says, total cut and paste. Like every Beach Boy-related quote you've ever read has been eaten, swallowed and expelled !
138  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: How Could the Beach Boys Have Kept Themselves Relevant after 1966? on: December 02, 2012, 01:31:52 AM
They just celebrated their 50th year, isn't that a pretty good record of relevance?
But (and I'll put my bullet-proof vest on ready) the BB's arrived at their 50th year as a touring band based mainly on playing songs from their golden hit-making period and not necessarily being "relevant".
139  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Beach Boys Night on BBC4 Tonight on: December 01, 2012, 01:33:37 AM
Verdict on Doin' It Again : the sync'ed Good Vibrations footage alone was worth the whole hour, and it was very good to see the Dennis Wilson rockumentary again.

It's Beach Boys night on BBC4 - 21:00 Doin' It Again,  21:55 Live At Knebworth and at 23:05 a welcome repeat of Dennis Wilson : The Real Beach Boy...
142  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: 'Classic' Bands You Have No Desire To Listen To, And The Reasons Why on: November 25, 2012, 04:25:07 AM
I guess the only artist on the list I have no interest in getting into is Joni Mitchell. My female singer songwriter slot is currently filled by Laura Nyro. I'm pretty sure I only have one slot. BTW, how do you say Laura Nyro's last name ?
Does it rhyme with pyro, hero??

Laura Nyro's last name rhymes with hero. BTW, Eli & The 13th Confession and New York Tendaberry are essentials.
143  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Thread for various insignificant questions that don't deserve their own thread! on: November 18, 2012, 11:40:08 AM
Think it's on the 2nd ever Smile CD boot... there's a vocal version of Carl's lead with a Brian-shaped hole.  Grin
That's funny...I have a Smile GV boot on which you hear Brian's bits with a Carl-shaped hole !
144  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Unbootlegged Beach Boys songs on: November 09, 2012, 02:21:56 AM
I'll take Aegir's point one step further. I have a feeling that the best Brian Wilson/Beach Boys songs are the ones that we will NEVER hear, simply because nobody remembers them, as they are lost to the foggy haze of history. Father Time can be a vengeful bitch. I don't want the upcoming box set to have unbooted tracks. I want it to come included with the formula for a time machine so I can go to Brian's house between the years 1970 to around 1975 and be a fly on the wall in the room whenever Brian sits down to play the piano.  Cool
As long as you take a recorder with you and bring it back to the present so we can hear the results !

Hell, nothing is happening on this thread so I invite y'all to chat about the merits of Oasis live records as a sideline. Revisiting my yoof...

Big B-Side fan, especially 'Lets All Make Believe' (Mainly since it's not on The Masterplan)

Talking about B-sides (albeit on the MP), 'Half the World Away' is great. They're Pachelbel-fueled 'Whatever' is not too shabby either.
To me, the best Oasis albums are Morning Glory and Be Here Now - I truly love those albums.
"Whatever" is Pachelbel-fuelled via The Rutles' "How Sweet To Be An Idiot"  Smiley
146  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The BB Experience Thread on: November 07, 2012, 01:42:21 PM
For the BWPS show I saw in 2004, managed to be first in the queue for tickets, so the best seats in the house happened to be 3 feet directly in front of Brian ! During the encore, Brian reached out and greeted the front row, my friend shook his hand and has been dining out ever since on the tale of how he "shook the hand of God Only Knows" !
147  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: how much money they actually make per show (circa 2008) on: October 15, 2012, 03:37:57 AM
Couldn't quite believe the M & B band cost $140,000 for an evening, but have just done a few sums and the amount makes sense. Based approximately on the figures for the Beach Boys show I attended in 2004 at my 2500 capacity town hall somewhere in the south of England, tickets were around 35. The show was virtually sold out (only a few seats left), so working from this :

35 x 2500 = 87500

Using an online currency converter : 87500 = $140,517.36

So this figure would seem reasonable, the next question is how much would the costs of travelling internationally be, how much do the individuals in the band get, what's Mike and Bruce's cut, etc...
148  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The Beach Boys: Stamos, Love, Johnston on: October 12, 2012, 09:12:36 AM
I think Dennis was splashing in his grave when this happened.

OMG, the disgrace - I'm scarred for lfe, I wish I could un-see what I've just seen ! What was that quote from Dennis himself about karma ?
149  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The Beach Boys: Stamos, Love, Johnston on: October 12, 2012, 04:54:22 AM
Not having a personal dig at Stamos, he's probably a quite a nice bloke and a fellow Beach Boys lover, but having him on  stage is just totally unnecessary, musically and otherwise. The best thing he could do is understand this and keep his appearances to a minimum, introduce them at gigs occasionally, but not try and join the band...
150  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The Beach Boys: Stamos, Love, Johnston on: October 11, 2012, 02:03:49 PM
Isn't that shot of Stamos quite poorly photo-shopped on to an existing picture of Mike and Bruce ?
