I don't know about recordings. I don't recall any flubbed lines. Al was in his late 40's I guess. It was technically a better concert as I prefer Al's voice to Mike's but as I said there was little onstage patter. Instead of the big build up Mike would do with the car song medley it was kind of like "we're going to do some car songs now. I guess imagine a whole concert like the difference in the Caifornia Saga lead with Al instead of Mike. If that makes any sense.

Yes, you are correct it was Al who did Mike's leads. And they also did Sister Golden Hair since Mr. Beckley was there. It was a good concert but a little strange with only 3 Beach Boys there (Al, Carl, Bruce) and very little talking between songs. And my memory was faulty it must have been 90 or 91 because my last Beach Boys concert was right after SIP was released and Mike was there. Btw, we were offered a refund when it was announced that Mike wouldn't be there.

Very cool, Parks Asher! I will be there too! This will be my first Beach Boys concert since 1992 ( after seeing them every year since 1976) and my first with any Beach Boys since Brian Wilson's Pet Sounds Tour in 2000. We should have a good weather night as the humid air is clearing out of here. Hopefully that translates to a good concert.

I don't get Mike's gesture of putting the gun to his head after hearing the end suite, nor do I get his comments about clouds.
Is he saying it was depressing and it's suicide music???
I think that the clouds comment refers to the fact that had he written the lyrics, there would be a touch of hope or positivity to those songs. Summer's On! (lyrics by M. Love) Summer's On! Summer's here to stay Here today Just like yesterday Old friends have gone They've gone to surf some bitchin' waves Our dreams hold on You know we still have more to say

1) From There To Back Again 2) Pacific Coast Highway 3) Summer's Gone 4) Isn't It Time 5) Shelter 6) That's Why God Made The Radio 7) Strange World 8. Think About The Days 9) Bill and Sue 10) Daybreak 11) Beaches In Mind 12) Spring Vacation I think I would have liked Daybreak better with a stronger lead vocal from Mike. Funny that he sounds older in 2005 than now. I rated Bill and Sue pretty low but I must admit the chorus is my guilty pleasure. For those of you that have Spring Vacation ranked so highly I really don't understand. I wish that I could unhear it.

ATTENTION! I did NOT wish for it to be the talk of racism, I am not racist and I have many multi-ethnic friends. My phrasing was very bad and I apologize for it! My point was there were only Contemporary RnB/ Hip Hop stars - who happen to be mostly black + some kids from Disney channel who were there, where are all the other mainstream rock/pop artists. It was an MJ song, and I know RnB/Hip Hop is mostly descended (they claim) from MJ so there is supposedly a musical bond or whatever. And therefore the main musicians of other genres (who happen to be mostly non-black) have no connection or affection for MJ decided to not do it. I simply pointed out that Brian and Al were the only ones who 'broke' the trend. It was very nice of them but seemed a bit out of place! No offence to anyone. Not the intention. Peace&Love to all I remember Tony Bennett being there. I think he is neither black or a Hip Hop artist.

About five years ago there used to be some people on this board who really appreciated and loved MIU -- a guy named Jason Penick was a true and great advocate of the album. I agreed with him then, and still think it's a great album. It's really fun if you don't take it too seriously.
"She's Got Rhythm" -- great album opener, love the verses musically "Come Go with Me" -- not Al's best cover idea, almost sounds like a solo track, but not terrible "Hey Little Tomboy" -- sonically fastastic, great group involvement in vocals, lyrics have to be taken as a joke "Kona Coast" -- musically based on "Hawaii," the bridge is pretty creative "Peggy Sue" -- uninspired "Wontcha Come out" -- really nice Brian vocal, sweet BW composition "Sweet Sunday" -- I really love this one, great Carl vocal, great Be My Baby-inspired arrangement "Belles of Paris" -- music is great, lyircs are sort of silly but still they're kind of fun "Pitter Patter" -- funky chords & harmonies, a creative song "My Diane" -- one of the ten greatest songs ever recorded, Denny's vocal utterly heartbreaking "Matchpoint" -- almost as great as "My Diane," people need to get over the tennis metaphors -- they work! "Winds of Change" -- kind of treacly but not bad
I think that when you have to use as many qualifiers as you do it tends to disprove your point. "My Diane" is a good song. I feel safe in asserting that it is not one of the 10 greatest songs ever recorded.

For what it is, it's well done. The songs are decent, and so is the production. Someone once remarked that it's the first Beach Boys album to come out in quite a few years that actually sounds like the Beach Boys.
Yes, but there's no soul or emotion in it. Save for My Diane.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian's September sessions?

I find 'an unavoidable situation in the studio' rather funny sounding. What could that be? Having to put a wig on, perhaps sunglasses and a fireman's hat, and pretending that you're 25 again? Perhaps 'situation' points indeed to some scene shooting... something that is very time- and place-bound, really related to the SS Box ahead.
Well, we'll see...
On Brian's website it reads Dear friends, Sadly, it looks like we will be having to postpone the Scandinavian dates on our September tour. I have a commitment in the studio back in Los Angeles so we will have to be heading home after Brussels. I promise to get back to play Copenhagen, Stockholm and Oslo as soon as I can. I love that part of the world and the wonderful people who come to our shows. We will keep you posted on new dates. In the meantime, back to my first love the STUDIO!! Love and Mercy, Brian
