Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Did anyone watch the CNN 60's special last night?

Nice to see the short bit about Brian in the studio and mention the group. But I am at a loss as to what Michelle Phillips was getting at when she snickered while talking about Brian's ambition. Maybe I need to see it again, but I felt let down by CNN's presentation. Anybody else?
What she said is that Brian Wilson said he wanted to make the best album of all time. She was snickering about the piano in the sandbox. I see nothing to be let down about.

If you were employing a "listening test" in this "You Are So Beautiful" case, what would be your first/best choice of Dennis Wilson songs to make your case?

"Wouldn't it Be Nice" was a difficult song in the BB's setlist for a long time. The rare occasions when Brian was with them, he would try to sing it and his voice would give out. Al did it sometimes, Carl might've sung it, too, but it just seemed like it was in too high of a key for any of them. I think Jeff does a fine job on it.
Al did it every show on the C50 tour and hit it out of the park. No disrespect to Jeff but I'd rather hear Al sing it. I thought Al was being doubled by Jeff.

A mostly lurker reporting... Besides the previously mentioned stuff, it was a bit unusual when immediately after singing TWGMTR, Brian announced the next song as " we're going to do one now from our latest album". I believe the next song was actually God Only Knows. And he also told the crowd to sit down right before "I Get Around." I was four rows from the stage and I enjoyed it more than last year's 50th concert.

I like Good Time, too. I would've rated it higher, but I have to admit to being partial to the original/vintage, unreleased stereo mix. It seems like it was a concerted effort on the powers-that-be part to make the Love You mix, well, more Love You-esque: Not using that doubling effect on the choruses, mixing the backing vocals down to the point of almost not being there on the same choruses (they're also split in stereo on the vintage mix), those little vocal ad-libs at the end, etc., etc. It's also kind of cool how the band was so apt to dip into their '69-'71 tracks during this period -- be they actually used or just considered.
Though, I have to wonder: I don't remember, offhand, the professional reviews for LY at the time of its release, but surely someone had to notice the vast difference in Brian's voice on that track? Was it even mentioned, or the track's actual origins realized by any reviewer of notoriety at the time?
I only remember the Rolling Stone review which was very positive but I don't think even mentioned "Good Time." I bought the 8 track version, which did not list the lead singers, so I assumed Al sang lead on it.

Just wondering aloud.....what would you (or anybody) consider the last 'rock and roll" song Brian Wilson wrote?
To answer the question: I think if they so decide, this would be an excellent time to leave on a high. A good and top selling album and a very successful tour. However, if they want to continue recording and touring that would be great just as long as they can keep up with the current standard they have set this year.

Realistically, I don`t see how The Beach Boys could end after this tour. Mike and Bruce need the name in order to tour and I don`t see them retiring in a hurry. Hopefully Al and David would stick around but as long as Scott Totten is musical director they should do justice to the music regardless.
Making another studio album, as long as someone like Joe Thomas is there essentially in charge, shouldn`t be disastrous either. TWGMTR isn`t exactly a masterpiece and making an album of similar quality shouldn`t be beyond them if they choose to.
Do you think that the members that have been in Brian Wilson's band would continue to tour under these circumstances? Or would it be the smaller sized band that toured with Mike and Bruce?

Intermission.. No surprises yet, and I peeked at the set list on stage and don't see Darlin'. Great show so far! Mike made fun of Bruce for writing I Write the Songs--"Due to curfew we won't be playing it tonight, but you'll hear it tomorrow at the dentist's, or in the elevator, or...," to which Bruce responds, "Yeah, right after Kokomo" The pattern has seemed to be that when a "new" song pops up in a soundcheck, it takes a show or two before it gets into the actual setlist. Assuming "Darlin'" went okay, I would imagine it'll be in the next show or added within a couple of a shows. Which is great because I'm going to Saratoga the 23rd! Let us know if California Sage remains in the setlist! Yes California Saga third song in second set, Al on banjo. And if it wasn't a sellout it was damn close to one.

Mike announced tha TWGMTR will be #3 in billboard.
Which was a pretty cool to have announced at my concert. What's cool is at intermission when I checked in here and read that it would be #3, I saw Mike Love on his cellphone (my seats had a view of a small part of the backstage area) I'd bet anything he was getting the word then about the #3 status. Anyway....great concert! Brian was better than he appeared to be at the videos I saw of Bonnarro. And the backing band was terrific as usual. Dave and Jeff were great as I previously mentioned. No new songs yet....All Summer Long was done near the end of the second set. I'm not sure if that's been in the setlist all tour or not. In short, a wonderful night and a wonderrful concert!
