2076  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Songs From Here & Back in Europe? on: August 11, 2006, 10:30:07 AM
I live in Europe and I'm looking for a way to get that Hallmark CD... Hallmark USA doesn't ship outside the USA, Hallmark in the Netherlands doesn't have it and can't order it either. Does anyone know if it can be ordered somewhere else?

I read an interview with Mike where he said that Al tried to set up a symphonic BB tour without him.

"The Euro edition" is a totally different beast. It's called The Platinum Collection - Sounds Of Summer edition and is the small matter of 30 tracks - or 100% - longer. EMI have been issuing 'Platinum Collections' of all its major artists: 3CD sets for about £15, and the BB one is an ideal primer as it takes you from "Surfin'" to "California Dreamin'", touching most bases along the way.

That's a great compilation. It even contains tracks like Forever, Surf's Up, Til I Die and You Still Believe In Me. It's probably the best BB carreer overview so far apart from the GV box set.
2079  Smiley Smile Stuff / Ask The Honored Guests / Re: The Peter Ames Carlin Thread on: August 11, 2006, 02:32:32 AM
I finally found a Dutch webstore that has it, so I ordered it today. Can't wait to read it.

And maybe the success of BWPS made him realize that it's not just the early songs that the public likes.
2081  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Mike & Bruce's setlists appeal to broad range of fans...casual to hardcore on: August 11, 2006, 01:16:42 AM
Any thoughts?

The number of live shows Mike has done with the Beach Boys is probably closer to 10,000 then to 5,000... I can imagine he'd want to make some changes in the setlist every now and then...
2082  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Pet Sounds Live in November on: August 08, 2006, 04:25:16 AM
Since it's because of the 40th anniversary of a Beach Boys album, he really should ask Mike, Bruce and Al to participate, since they seem to be on speaking terms.

"Good Timin'"

Is that Dennis? I hope not, cause that's probably the most boring drum track ever recorded... It sounds almost like one of those pre-recorded rhythms in a cheap toy keyboard.

Some people don't know what they're selling.

And thank God for that.
2085  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Who do you like best outside of the five core members on: August 06, 2006, 05:27:02 AM
Question about the subject of this topic: aren't "Who do you like best" and "Who is the most talented" two completely different questions?
2086  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Today I found the Holy Grail... on: August 06, 2006, 05:10:33 AM
I went to a tiny little record market today to see if they had any good bootleg CDs... Then I saw someone holding the record that's been #1 on my wantlist for years... Pacific Ocean Blue by Dennis Wilson... I asked if he was going to buy it, and he said "I'm not sure, it's not even the right Wilson".  Shocked So I said I really really really wanted that album badly, and he said I could have it...

So now I've got a perfect copy of the POB LP and it costed me SEVEN EUROS!!!  Grin

This is an easy one: Bruce.

A gifted songwriter, been with the BB for about 35 years, I like his voice and he seems like a very cool guy.

Nobody 'presses' 5 CDs... If you need 5 CDs, you'll burn them. So basically it seems like they're offering a CD-recordable with a xeroxed cover for 65 pounds... Sounds like a huge rip off.
2089  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Nick Drake on: July 29, 2006, 01:48:37 PM
I know Pink Moon's everyone's favorite, but I'm generally just not really into music with just a voice and a guitar or just a voice and a piano. I know Pink Moon's a great piece of art, no question, but I just can't get into it. I wish I could.
2090  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Groupies on: July 29, 2006, 10:48:52 AM
not a groupie story per se, but theres an EXCELLENT dennis story for the track 'all i wanna do' in the desper thread. do a search 3D

Since that woman was paid for her 'services' she was technically not a groupie.  Grin

I was shocked to find out that Bryter Layter sold just 15,000 copies in 1970. Such a great album. I'm not really a fan of Pink Moon though, can't really get into that one.

Anyone else notice that on the timeline, we go from the release of Still Cruisin' in 1989 to the GV box set in 1993 totally skipping over Summer in Paradise?!?!  Even the band doesn't want to own up to that travesty!  Can't say I blame them.

The site looks awesome though.  I am hoping more good things are on the way!

I guess making the timeline for the 80s/90s/00s was harder cause Keith Badman's book doesn't cover those decades...  Grin

Should I blame it on my limited knowledge of internet slang or on the fact that English isn't my first language that I seriously don't have a clue what you mean by that?

I wouldn't have associated the song "Forever" with little babies, but....I didn't see Al in the video; was this that period when he was temporarily asked to leave. And seeing Carl again, damn...

I once saw a birth announcement card with the lyrics to the first verse of God Only Knows on it, which I thought was just perfect. Many of the BB's ballads could just as well be about children/babies as about women.
2095  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Worst live act you've ever seen in person. on: July 24, 2006, 06:03:44 AM
I've been going to punk shows on an almost weekly base for the last 9 years, so I'm pretty sure I've seen more bad performances than all of you combined.  Afro

Hi, I found today another Knebworth CD.

BTW Is there not a possibility the songs with the DVD, besides are to be got somewhere?

I found that CD too. And on the back it says it's the last show the Beach Boys ever did with Brian...  Roll Eyes
2097  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Bruce Johnston as a member of the Beach Boys on: July 06, 2006, 01:59:57 AM
Well I consider him a Beach Boy in a way but to me he just doesn't quite match the others talent wise.

Bruce was definately not the least talented singer, producer and songwriter in the Beach Boys, so I disagee.

And I think it's wrong to not consider Bruce a 'real' Beach Boy because he missed the first four years and a few years in the 70s. It must be frustrating to still be more or less 'the new guy' in a band you joined 41 years ago...
2098  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: New Brian interview on: July 05, 2006, 12:53:18 PM
Seriously.  Old people can't make good music, and that's a scientific fact.

I thought McCartney's last album was pretty great though.
2099  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / Smiley Smilers Who Make Music / Re: Ever feel like giving up music? on: July 05, 2006, 06:14:55 AM
My advice as an amateur musician with mediocre talent who has however sold a few thousand CDs and played many shows in 7 different countries the last few years:

First of all: homemade demos are useless. Nobody will listen to them.
Second: don't wait around until someone 'discovers' you. People won't come asking for you, not even if you're good.

Save some money and book a few days at a real studio. Send the result to every record label you can think of. Not just the big major labels, also to the small indie labels. If you offer a finished product (a professional recording plus, if possible, professional cover art work) you've got a chance that some low budget indie labels will bite. Cause record labels are lazy, they'll do as little as possible so they like it when people offer them a finished product. So far this has worked for every single band I've ever been in. And if this doesn't work, release it yourself! Having 500 or 1000 CD's professionally pressed isn't really that expensive anymore. Maybe that doesn't sound very glamorous, but it's a start and it beats waiting around for something to happen.

Good luck.
