Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: How about that Beatles show!?

I thought it was absolutely fantastic. After watching the Grammy's, it was refreshing to see the artists who did the Beatles catalog do them right. The liberties that were taken (Imagine Dragons, Stevie Wonder, Ed Sheeran) were very well done. And the artists who tried to emulate the original sounds did a great job. It really exceeded my expectations. It was great to see Ringo up there singing Matchbox, Boys, and Yellow Submarine and Paul, as always, was fantastic. Loved seeing Ringo get With a Little Help all to himself while Paul sang harmony backup. It sorely missed John and George, but the artists who did their songs did them justice.

"They said "what is this sh*t? Where's the surf music?" Dennis was no doubt just saying this for effect. While record execs might have been hoping for more tracks like 'Help Me Rhonda" or 'California Girls', no one in the music biz in 1966 believed that surf or hot rod songs were still commercially viable. That short-lived fad died in the summer of 1964, sunk by the British Invasion. Exactly and Brian promptly left the surf and hot rod songs in July 1964. The b side of Today! was an emotional jolt and showed the path he was taking.

When will people realise The White Album isn't that good.
Thank you. Some of the songs on that album are my favorite tracks by the Beatles, but really, the album as a whole? Not that great. Yes it is. The entire 90 minute album is just one amazing song after another. It is also perfectly sequenced and produced. That is fine, I never said it sucked. I prefer the 3 chronologically former albums (not including MMT which I love). It is wonderfully produced, but there are some songs here and there not up to snuff compared to the great songs on it. It is preference, your word is not the final say for anyone else but yourself. Neither is mine for you or others.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: BBs at #8 in AARP Bulletin poll

Totally forgot about Shake-Rattle, their another signature. Didn't know anything about all these chart positions & chronology of events. After the latter I now kind of get why they're chosen over The BBs. Thanks for clarifying, LetHimRun!
That is the only reason I can see them over the BBs for those certain people. I wouldn't put them ahead of the BBs, but I didn't grow up when Bill Haley literally exploded on a scene that was desperate for it. This was also the time when Chuck Berry, Fats Domino, and Bo Diddley were having success, but Bill Haley was able to take it up a notch or two and the younger white audience ate it up. If I remember correctly, Rock Around the Clock was used in a movie in 1955 and that helped catapult it also.

I'm not really surprised Bill Haley & His Comets are ranked so high. It doesn't matter they only had one huge hit and a couple other hits (three singles that sold 1+ million is pretty good though). It's WHEN they had them that made the impact on that generation. Rock Around the Clock was a huge #1 hit two years before Elvis finally broke through with Heartbreak Hotel. Even Shake, Rattle and Roll went to #7 a year and a half before Elvis hit the top 40.
Rock Around the Clock stayed at #1 for 8 weeks on the US 100 and even got to #3 on the R&B chart. It was also the first single in UK to ever sell one million copies, not that they apply to the AARP, but it shows how big the song and in turn the group was at the time.
100 "fans" is a pretty dang small testing sample, though. It'd be interesting what it'd be if there were many more.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Best Song Sound Effects

Great topic, SIB! Since it is about the "best" sound fx, not a list of everything we remembered, here's my 50c: Vegetable crunching
Tape exploding- H&V The sound effects used on Diamond Head Glass breaking, silver wear rubbing together- Take a Load off Your Feet Hammers, saws, drills- i wanna be around/Friday night
Also battle cry of Ninja ("San Miguel"), the "night" effect, fireworks, footsteps ("Mount Vernon & Fairway"), the birds ("At My Window"), an alarm clock ("I Just Got My Pay"), fake audience ("Loop De Loop"), whirling (AC tracks), animals ("Barnyard"), train ("Caroline, No"). The water sounds on "Cool Cool Water" combined with the water chant is my favorite section of the song.
CCW is high art imo. They went into the foothills outside of LA and recorded several hours worth of different streams and creeks flowing. They picked the right one for that song, which is itself excellent with stellar vocals, humourous lyrics but genuine all the same. You can feel the warmth of the SoCal sun overhead and the cool sensation of drinking that cool, refreshing water. You can feel yourself sitting down, leaning against the mighty trunk of a deciduous tree, as the warmth of the air surrounds you, you can hear the trickling water of the stream nearby, you look down on the ground next to you and you see the ants move around without a sound. Cool Cool Water is a strong which is unique in the sense that I am really transported to the warmth of California... Excellent post, Cabinessenceking! Except I think the song's beautiful even minus water sounds. But with them it's a sheer brilliance. Call me nuts, but I like the bicycle bell in Strange World!
Why will anyone call you crazy? That's just how you hear it. Window shade raising on Wake the World Interesting, I always heard it as a snow shovel. Maybe because the window shade in my house sounds different. Snow shovel? That's an excellent observation! What's the "whirling" effects from AC tracks? Is that Adult Child? Snow shovel? It always sounded like someone sharpening a blade to me! Although yes, blinds opening makes a lot more sense doesn't it... Can't believe that's never dawned on me before. In "Wake The World", I always thought it was Venetian blinds. I don't know how anyone can hear it and not think it is the sound of window blinds going up. The song is named Wake the World. Blinds going up in the morning to wake the people sleeping. Seems pretty easy to me.

Well, importCDs uses media mail service from USPS. It's the cheapest service which means it's significantly slower than your normal first class service. That's the trade off when you order from them..it's not really the USPS's fault since it was importCds that designated the service speed.
You are correct, but he didn't blame the USPS, I did for their sorting mistake. Mine left on August 23rd and would have been here today on the 30th (which isn't bad at all because I wasn't in a huge hurry) if not for the sorting mishap that sent it 5 states northward.

For anyone like me who ordered from importcds and has yet to receive their shipment. Here is the brief synopsis of my experience thus far:
Ordered Friday 8/23, marked as shipped 7 hours later which was 8 pm EST/5 pm PST from California Left California on Wednesday 8/28 Arrived in Kentucky today, Friday 8/30 at 6:30 am EST
With delivery to where I live in NJ, and no delivery on Monday (Labor Day in the US) I expect arrival Tuesday 9/3--which marks an 11-day odyssey from shipment to receipt. Yeah, won't be using importcds for anything I greatly care about in the future--prices are great but don't get it if you are in a rush. As a school teacher who returns to work Tuesday 9/3 I am not a happy camper...
Mine would be here today from importCds if our lovely United States Postal Service that loses $1B annually didn't get it here to my city's sorting facility and then dispatch it to freaking Maryland! It's now through Greensboro, NC on its way back to FL I assume. Probably won't get it until Tuesday like you. And we wonder why the USPS is junk. I keep saying as long as I get it in one piece, I'll be fine...

Huh! What's the next worst thing to being in the hands of DHL? That's right, you guessed it, being in the hands of the USPS:
My tracking is identical to yours. Nice to know that after being "shipped" 2 days ago, it's still in California. We're all three in the same boat. Mine is now in the hands of the USPS in Bell, CA and it has to go all the way to FL. My estimated delivery date is August 30th. Oh well. As long as it gets here in good shape.
