I've slowed down because I only have a few pages left and don't want it to end.  Love the book.  Brian has a fantastic sense of humor.

5  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Dean Torrence book, "Surf City" on: September 28, 2016, 05:39:21 PM
Nestled between Mike's book and Brian's book, we get a book from Dean Torrence.  It's a great read so far, I'm about 3/4 the way through it.  One of the first things that surprised me was, before "Jan & Dean", both Jan and Dean were in a vocal group called The Barons.  Jan had been playing piano but they decided to hire a new piano player and they hired Jan's next door neighbor, Bruce Johnston.  This was in 1958.

We all know the whole "Surf City" story, but it was interesting to see how Jan tweaked Brian's original lyrics.  And even though Murray forbid Brian from having anything to do with Jan & Dean, he went back and sang with them again on "Drag City".  There's a whole chapter in the book on The Beach Boys.

The book paints a nice portrait of life in California in the early 60's, and gives some interesting tidbits on the music business.

He doesn't look real comfortable with a fretboard.

8  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Mike Love on "Access Hollywood" this morning. on: September 16, 2016, 07:07:13 PM
Mike was hawking his book on "Access Hollywood" this morning.  It was more of the same from him.  He talked about how great TM is and how he was into it in the 60's while the others were doing drugs.  He talked about Charles Manson and said Susan Atkins had babysat for his children.  He mentioned how Dennis had dated one of his ex-wives and that made for tension when they were playing.  He went on and on about how great John Stamos is, which seems odd when he was there to promote himself and his book.  He asserted, again, that Brian has always been controlled.  First by his father, then by Landy, and that he is still being controlled.  He said if it weren't for the controllers, he and cousin Brian could sit down at a piano and write music again.  He seems to take a lot more song-writing credit than he is due.

All in all, nothing new from Mike.  The book does sound interesting however.

Better Al, Carl, and Dennis than in "Love and Mercy".

I'd rather listen to "Kokomo" than "Santa's Got An Airplane".

I was watching some of the bonus material on the DVD today, and Dean Torrence was telling the story of "Surf City".  He said Brian played him "Surfin' USA" on the piano and told him it was the Beach Boys' next song.  Then he said he had another song that he'd lost interest in and didn't want to finish and offered it to Jan & Dean.  That was "Surf City".  Of course, it became a hit, and Murray was livid.  Murray accused Jan of being a "song pirate" and told him not to come around anymore.   So, he shows up at a Beach Boys recording session wearing a pirate costume complete with eye patch.   Murray told Brian to make him leave, Brian refused, so Murray left.

Forgot to mention in my earlier post that "Love and Mercy" seems to draw pretty heavily on the "I Just Wasn't Made For These Times" video.  Some things were taken verbatim from that film, like Brian's description of how Murray beat then as kids (the restaurant scene in L&M), and him saying how sometimes "your soul comes out to play".

Saw it this afternoon in Saratoga Springs, NY.  There were 25-30 people, not bad for 3:50 PM matinee on a Tuesday.  It was dead silent in the theater throughout the movie and, as others have mentioned, not one person go up during the ending credits.

I thought the movie was incredible, obviously much more meaningful to the BB/BW faithful.   My first watery eyes moment was Brian (Dano) singing "Caroline No".

Cusack did a terrific job with the quirks and mannerisms of 80's Brian.  I got a kick out of the scene with Brian (Cusack) shouting to Melinda and then sheepishly admitting he'd forgotten her apartment number.    That's the Brian we know and love.

Bring on the DVD and the soundtrack!

The book "When We Get To Surf City" by Bob Greene offers a great look at Jan & Dean touring in later years.

I never cared much for "Wild Honey" when it first came out.  Now I keep playing Blondie's version from the Soundstage DVD over and over.

DVD/Blueray combo arrived in upstate NY today.  Watching it as I type and really enjoying it.  As many have stated, it's a very good concert disc, far superior to the C50 video.

It would be great to see Dave's book re-released with additional chapters on the reunion and tour.  It was great to see him playing with the band again.
