Post by: Howie Edelson on July 09, 2012, 12:41:55 PM
The Beach Boys and Brother Records proudly present

“CALIFORNIA SAGA”
The next chapter in the story of America’s Band

Group to perform with at Grammy Museum in Los Angeles, CA

Over the last 50 years the Beach Boys have become the most successful band in American music history. As they celebrate that anniversary with a new album and an international tour their children come to together to honor that legacy and write a new chapter in this family band. “California Saga” is a band comprising of the historic bloodlines that fueled some of the greatest songs in the pop music songbook. With a rare vocal blend only possible in siblings the band explores the Beach Boys rarities catalog and brings to life songs that may never have been performed live before.

The group made their debut performing alongside The Beach Boys at the Hollywood Bowl on Saturday, June 2nd, then again the following night to open the Sunday, June 3rd show in Irvine at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre. California Saga is pleased to join the Beach Boys during their appearance at The Grammy Museum in LA.

Follow the band on Facebook at: www.Facebook.com/CalSagaBand

When: July 10, 2012
Time: 8pm  (there will be a one hour interview and Q&A followed by a performance)
Where: Clive Davis Theatre at the Grammy Museum, 800 West Olympic Blvd.

Wait ........ The Beach Boys are gonna be there too? Are you actually telling me I have a ticket to see The Beach Boys perform in a 200-seat theater?
I think I'll choose not to get my hopes up just yet, for the sake of the health of my heart.

I just called the venue and they said they weren't aware of the Beach Boys performing--they weren't told anything.  But if they were told, they probably wouldn't be able to say anything anyway.   ??? Um okay......

It's possible (though highly unlikely) they could be there but it'd be a tight, tight trip.  Colorado tonight then a 90 minute plane ride over to LA for the Cal Saga group at the Grammy's then hop another plane that same evening for a show in Calgary, Canada.  I mean, I guess it's possible.  But if they don't have to make this performance why bother adding a side trip like that?

I think RS mag just got it wrong...

I hope they show up so their won't be a bunch of disappointed people

I would feel badly for Cal Saga if they had to see a bunch of people groan and moan because they were expecting to see the BB show up instead of actually wanting to see their new band perform.  Don't get me wrong, I'd love for the BB to be there also...I've been to this venue before and it's a small theatre...the sound would be amazing but this weird mystery billing puts Cal Saga in the backseat when the evening was supposed to be about them.

I'm plenty excited just to see Cal Saga, but I probably wouldn't complain if the BBs decided to join them for a song or two.

Also, there's supposed to be a Q&A. Does anyone have any good ideas for questions for Cal Saga?

Rolling Stone has edited their post to remove the part about The Beach Boys joining them and Cal Saga posted on Facebook mentioning being excited for their first "stand alone" show.  Looks like its going to be them solo, which is still totally awesome.

I'm pumped!

Mike Love was there, no mention of any other BB.  He joined them onstage for California Girls, per Grammy Museum.

This was one of the most (if not the most) amazing BB-related events/shows I've ever been to. Absolutely historic. Mike Love took the stage and had such a truly, from the heart, emotional moment with his family onstage, it had to be seen to be believed.

Not to oversell it, but in all honesty, it was touching and moving like nothing people in that room (or even Mike himself) were prepared for.

I think that when footage of this is seen, it will have an impact (positive) on the history of this band, and help to heal some of the things that have happened along the way in the eyes of the public. Being there in person to see this feet away from me was unreal.

And this is overlooking the actual song performances which were utterly STELLAR and SPECTACULAR.
It's times like these that I'm so very glad to be a (lucky) L.A. native when it comes to seeing very special BB-related shows like this.

Someone else who I was with there did capture this footage and it'll be up very soon from what I gather.

Mike had an honest emotional moment from his heart which brought him to tears, like many others there too. The audience gasped when it happened. It started when he was talking to Carl B. about hardly knowing him while he grew up, and it was Mike just talking in a very honest and pure fashion about how he knows his vilified persona within the public eyes, but trying to explain how he had good intentions along the way.

There was nary a dry eye in the house or onstage amongst the Saga kids either.

Century said it better than I could put to words.

Tonight was absolutely perfection. A wonderful night to see a family reunion unfold in front of your eyes.  Everywhere you looked in the audience the extended Beach Boy family, Marilyn, Bobby Figueroa, Allan Boyd, Jonah Wilson, Barbara Wilson and on and on were all greeting each other and catching up---the room was so full of love.  When Cal Saga came on, and started singing, it was exactly the way it should have gone...the singing was top notch and they moved as one.

Mike Love, the prince of cool was in attendance and was smack dab, first row, cheering both Ambha and Christian.  He was bobbing his head, grooving along and even singing along quietly to himself, mouthing the words to many songs even songs he never sang lead on like "Till I Die."  It was extremely great to see this.  He got up to do "California GIrls" with the group and to hear him come through the speakers practically a cappella---was glorious.  That bass vocal...wow.

As Century mentioned above, when MIke took the stage to say a few words, no one could have anticipated how much the emotions poured out of him...but they were bubbling to the surface.  The night was about healing wounds, letting the music heal the scars and just keeping the love within the family....from my perspective, Mike was moved by the entire evening.  When he spoke of Justyn and Carl B.'s voices, Mike was visibly emotional and the room fell silent as we hung on every word.    You'll see.

I'm currently uploading both "California Girls" and Mike's little speech that I described above.  Quite frankly, it's a video every fan should see.

There were so many great moments at this show, it's hard to get them all straight in my head.

A couple more tidbits:

- During the Q&A I politely made a request for the band to (in the future) cover All I Wanna Do + Celebrate the News. When Carnie seemed perplexed as to what song All I Wanna Do was, Mike Love (sitting in the front row a few sets from me) started singing a few lines from the song. First ever live (or partial live) version by Mike?

- Mike also said California Saga would be opening for the Beach Boys next year, along the lines of this being part of a tour.  Yes, this 50th tour is not the end of the BB (but we all kinda knew that already, right)?

FYI, the video starts off with Mike in the middle of explaining how his wife Jacqueline was only 1 or 2 years old when "California Girls" first came out.  Funny anecdote!

Wow amazing!  Thanks so much for sharing.  There's something about seeing the kids...at the Bowl show, the Carl tribute video was nice..but what really moved me was seeing Justyn singing Carl's parts on "All This Is That."  I regret I didn't hear about this Grammy museum show until it was way sold out.

And here you go while I go off to bed...the panel discussion and audience Q&A with California Saga.  That's me towards the tail end asking what they thought about TWGMTR when they first heard it.

But here's the kicker....as Century describes above...listen very carefully to Mike sing a few lines of "All I Wanna Do" to help refresh Carnie's memory on the the song's melody.  You can barely hear him but he's there... at 36:04

That Mike took the time to attend, then say those very touching and significant words, and then singing Cal Girls putting as much into it as if he were at Bonaroo... gosh, gotta love that guy. He's become a sort of patriarch for  the family in a way.

These are great times indeed!

I was also there last night and it was very very emotional. I sat behind the family and they were all in tears at the end too. Justyn and Carl B's wives were earnestly video and photographing everything and Stephen Kalinich was very emotional. The first appearance of Alan Boyd since his hospital stay. Annie Wilson Karges resting her head on son Jonah's shoulder while the band performed. You could hear a pin drop during Mike Love's speech. It was quite a night.

My pleasure Doc..glad you enjoyed it!

You know, in thinking about it, yes I was moved by the evening.  But I wondered why exactly it struck me as so special for myself and the few others I talked to as I walked away from the performance. I think part of the reason was that it was a weird collection of confused emotions that we as fans kept locked away much in the same way that Mike Love seems to have done.  When Mike was emotional, we all went there with him.  He needed to get through those emotions and so did we (and all of you who saw the video too).  So it was a little bit of like an emotional cleanse for everyone.  That's what made it so surreal.  We weren't expecting it nor thought we needed it.  But when it happened, it was like "wow, where did this come from??"  as I wipe away a tear.   It was very emotionally satisfying.

Man, you hit the nail right on the head. I went through the same thing watching and listening to everything this morning. I was getting glassy-eyed just watching Mike hug Carl B. & Justyn. I came away feeling like some kind of weight had been lifted, so the family must have been floating on air.

Wow, very powerful! Extremely emotional; amazing to see this side of Mike Love, but I clould only imagine how he must have felt at this stage in his life, having his kids, and the others, follow in their footsteps so magnificently. And to see Carl and Denny's kids, well, that was just too much. Thank you so much for posting.

Thanks for posting the gig, the harmonies sound fantastic, it's nice to hear that Wendy and Carnie can actually sing after hearing the hideous robot voices on 'Dedicated'. So many great things about this, the vocals on 'You Still Believe In Me' are brilliant and hearing 'Anna Lee' live is just the icing on the cake. Also, is that Ambha doing Bruce's parts on California Girls?

The tag on Till I Die is the same tag as on The Wilson's album

Thanks for posting the gig, the harmonies sound fantastic, it's nice to hear that Wendy and Carnie can actually sing after hearing the hideous robot voices on 'Dedicated'. So many great things about this, the vocals on 'You Still Believe In Me' are brilliant and hearing 'Anna Lee' live is just the icing on the cake. Also, is that Ambha doing Bruce's parts on California Girls?

The show was fantastic..so glad I was there. I'd upload video but it looks like it's been covered pretty well by Justin.

Just gonna quickly echo what others said before, this was so much more special than what I think any of us were anticipating.

Highlights (aside from the performances and interviews themselves):

- Watching Marilyn nod along with Til I Die, which I would have imagined would be a hard song to listen to for her.

- Mike being the only member of the group to make the impressive effort to come to this celebration of Beach Boys rarities, and not only that, but he sits front row center, right next to what I'm sure was a completely blown away fan.

- Just being in a room full of people who have been touched by the music and people who made it in so many different ways.

yeah, no problem.  I'm just saying that at some level Brian probably had a hand in arranging that one...

Listening to bits of the CalSaga recording I recalled a very touching moment last night when a person from the audience asked Carl B. to say a few words about his dad's album "Pacific Ocean Blue."  Carl B. admitted that he only listened it for the first time after Dennis died but couldn't get through all of it saying the music is just so raw and so full of emotion--it's hard to get through.  He only recently tried to get back into it again but once again, couldn't get through it without the rush of emotions taking over.  He was visibly upset and began to choke up.  As we moved onto another question, Justyn reached out and rubbed Carl B's shoulder, trying to console him.  The whole evening was just so charged with emotions it was extremely palpable.  So it wasn't just the Mike speech later that brought us to that fragile place...the whole evening with incidences like this with Carl B made it clear that everyone on stage was just an arms length away from the raw emotions that these songs bring.  Quite incredible.

I absolutely love the fact that Mike Love, after fifty years, is looking to the future.  Not even just to another tour, or another album, or more of the endless-summer present moment he's been keeping alive for the Beach Boys' decades-long road trip...  but to a whole new generation of his family, who will be able to put all the pain and fighting behind them and just make that music *beautiful*.

For a family which was feuding even in the generation before the boys got together -- those tensions between the Wilson and Love parents which he mentions -- to have reached this place of harmony...  well, it really gives you hope for the human race, doesn't it?  Even if it took a couple of generations to get there.

And Mike?  If you can take those words and feelings you just expressed and put them into a song for the next album...  you will blow so many minds.  *That's* positivity.  That's an album closer that would top "Summer's Gone" right there -- look at the summer after you're gone, and know that those voices are carrying on...

Wow,
Jon Blum

My quick pitch for what might just happen in the next year or so of BB:

New box set and reissues of all albums with some liner notes by members of Cal Saga.

A new Beach Boys album featuring Cal Saga on all of side 2 of the album, including one song that's just them.

A Cal Saga EP or single

Beach Boys Goodbye Tour with Cal Saga in the opening slot.

Cal Saga Album produced by The Beach Boys

Beach Boys retire. Cal Saga takes over touring duties.

all extremely doubtful aside from maybe California Saga opening for the Beach Boys on tour next year, if they tour again. I especially doubt "professional celebrity" Carnie Wilson would spend all her time with this band. and Ambha is still in high school.

I would really like to hear an album of originals from them.

Adam`s song from a few years ago (it may have been called `While you Sleep`) and Carl B`s Touch Your Skin were both impressive. Plus several of the others have done their fair share of songwriting.

My hopes for Cal Saga?

That they take wing and do their own thing, prove themselves in their own right and come out from under the shadow of their famous dads.

If they do pick up the BBs baton and run with it, then I hope they're integrated slowly and gradually, not overnight, and as musicians as well as singers.  If The BBs retire tomorrow and CalSaga takes over, then that's the end of the BBs. If the original members play on as long as they can, and their kids are brought in appropriately, fittingly, in their place, gradually, then maybe there's a case for claiming that the BBs are continuing.

Where will Jeff's kids fit in in all this? Does he have kids?

Not keen on CalSaga simply performing their parents' material for the next 30 years…

There's no need or hurry for the BBs to retire. Heck, they are proving night after night that they still got it. Why would they retire? They can keep going like this until nature says otherwise. Not that it's uncool to think about the next generation, etc.

Jeff isn't a Beach    Boy or a member of BRI.  They aren't going to include his kids. They already have a surplus of Bb kids not included.

What an amazing video. It's so nice to see all the Wilson/Love/Jardine children getting together and healing all the wounds that may remain from their fathers. What an emotional speech by Mike when talking about Carl B and Justyn, I wonder what their thoughts were at the time. Do the different children hold any grudges I wonder?

Frankly, I love the idea of Carnie and Wendy greeting Mike with profuse profanity. And vice versa.

There's something about it that feels very real ... very much like a big, semi-dysfunctional family where you have the eccentric uncle you see every couple of years.

You know what I would love? To have Peter Reum write about this. His insights into the Wilson-Love family were always exceptional, and this video needs them.
