Nice stuff and well mixed! I'd love to hear more stripped down acoustic treatments.

Thanks for posting. The mix was fantastic - you could pick out each member's vocal parts. The interview was nice too - Brian sounded good.

These actually sounded great.  Some of the best stuff I heard them doing and Brian in really nice form.

Wonderful!
They should do more stuff (almost) just them singing because after all  that's what we love and care about.

Anyone is able to save these clips?

I really can't add anything substantive to this thread, but I'll parrot the amazement and glowing reaction that everyone else has so far: They sound ridiculously good! Especially Brian, wow...from the first word of "In My Room," I was transfixed. Bravo!

They sounded so good that at first I wondered if they were lip-synching. Then Brian stopped in the middle of a phrase to take a breath, and I knew it was live. Nice job.

To the powers that be:  consider an unplugged live album and/or DVD for the tour.  Would be an AMAZING addition to the Beach Boys catalog.

I've missed this elsewhere, so I'l ask here: What's up with Dave always wearing the sunglasses?

-- Mike's mouth looks really red.

-- Brian looks really relaxed.

-- Nice to clearly see the stuff in the background during the interview without the blurring in last week's playlist intros.

-- BB-pain? (Don't get me wrong; the blend sounds GREAT; this is Autotune used for good, not evil.)

Agreed. I would LOVE that. Very little "acoustic" stuff out there for the Beach Boys.

I heard the autotune a little, but it's alright because it was subtle. remember, this was recorded like a month ago when they were still using it

Wow, that was amazing.
Also, I love Brian's shirt.

I wonder if Brian has a stylist. A lot of his shirts have been cool lately. It's like he was told that the dress code was "patterned shirt" but he exercised restraint.

There's a credit for the wardrobe in the tour book. A high-end shirt maker. Most of his things look like that.

And Mrs. Love has also been involved, I hear.

What is all this talk about the group lip syncing or somehow having their voices augmented that's been going on lately? Not to pick on you, but it's all over YouTube as well. As some poster her was convinced that Brian couldn't possibly be singing the lead vocal on the live version of Isn't It Time.

I mean, we are talking about a harmony group here. And beyond the main five guys, you have two falsetto ringers, even at the Rolling Stone performance. At concerts, you have the 10 or so guys in the backing band. That's more than enough voices to cover any rough patches, and it's a heck of a lot easier than setting up prerecorded vocal tracks.

Scott Totten doesn't sing on the RS videos. But I agree with you. Why does everybody think their lip-synching ? All of them are natural born singers and don't have to concentrate on playing an instrument (except David) so yeah, they actually can sing and sound this good.

I am very surprised mikes excellent bass vocals at this little gig. I would like to think that this is 100% live and if so it had made the reunion worth it in every way and a new great album is the icing on the cake.

I feel like i did when i was 12 and discovering them for the first time.   ;D

Sorry to quote myself but I forgot to mention that it is common practice on TV to pre-record the tracks. The Beach Boys did that even in the 60 (see Andy Williams show for example). But I don't think it was the case on this performance. One has to look and hear carefully though to make sure.

Yeah, no way they're synching. They just sounded great!  And it's not like there was music track to singalong/synch with. It was LIVE.
But I don't think Dave had much playing to do there, it looked more like he was just sort of strumming along.
Plus Jeff was playing and singing too...

I don't think so either. If you listen to individual voices you can hear parts where they're caught a little out of breath and they drop out at the end of phrases, you wouldn't notice that with pre-recorded tracks. I think this is a case of them being well rehearsed and comfortable in what they're doing. Did I mention that they sound absolutely stunning?  ;D

Title: Re: The Rolling Stone Set is online
Post by: Justin on June 06, 2012, 02:25:17 PM
I think people are thrown off just how great they sound because this is the first time we've heard/seen them on this tour mixed properly with just the right amount of effects (autotune, reverb etc) working in their favor.  The Grammy's performance was shotty, the Dodger game opener was even worse, the QVC program came through clear as a bell but naked of any effects/assistance so here we have a beautifully recorded and mixed performance and we don't know what to do with ourselves.

When you get someone at the mixing board who loves and respects the band as much as we do--these are what the results sound like.

Oh my God, that sounded great.  :o I wonder, if just the surviving members(no Foskett or anybody else) tried to do Their Hearts Were Full Of Spring, how would it sound? With the right amount of studio trickery applied tastefully, I think it might sound pretty damn good.

Don't think they're lip-syncing.  There are definitely some live vocals going on there.  Just think maybe there was some pre-recorded "help".

I think that's what it is I'm hearing.  There is definitely some sort of "effect" (in addition to the reverb) that is giving their voices an unexpected gloss.  Not sure if it is some sort of pitch correction, but in any case this is by far the best-sounding "live" performance they've given.  Much better than the Leno perfomance.

And the singing is absolutely beautiful

http://www.rollingstone.com/videos/rs-live/beach-boys-play-their-classics-legends-perform-in-rolling-stone-studio-20120606

Is there no end to the awe and the joy: the BB are Betty White; they are everywhere and amazing; I listen to the album all day, saw them three times, hear all the interviews, the TV appearances. . . . .it's endless joy.

And this performance does but the lie to any accusations against their voices: they need proper balance and great recording artistry. Bruce sounds great--they all sound great, and Jeff, well, he's a big fan and helps out. . . . .

I hope that the DVDs the finally emerge (including whatever PBS produces and sells) will be this good.
