Yes, I know there's 4 shows before this but I'm just so damn excited  :)

Should be getting the itinerary by the weekend. I see by looking on the board that a couple of you are going to this one. There's apparently a big Wizard of Oz community slot machine there. Perfect photo op no?  :lol

About to leave for PA very soon. Dad and I decided to go the day before, mostly so he can be rested up for tomorrow (driving takes a lot out of him due to health issues) but also to gamble a bit  :lol

I could not be more excited for this show. I've seen Brian once, but I've never been to a Beach Boys show, and I certainly never thought I'd have a chance for *this*. Very stoked!

I've never seen Brian AT ALL, or the Mike/Bruce combo. I'm so psyched.
I don't think I'll be able to actually see Brian at all, the tickets I won are all the way over to the right, but just to be able say I was in the same room with the man! That's something...

If anyone is not aware, the venue is very small and very new.  In fact, this will only be the second show at this place - it just opened this week.  Every seat is less than 150 feet from the stage.  The floor seats are in a rectangular area in the center of the room that is recessed, with the stage 5 feet high in front, and elevated seats (almost the same height as the stage) on both right and left sides.

I don't know how the sound will be, but they have hyped up the newness and "state of the art" sound system.  For shows like this, with reserved seating (not standing room), it only seats 2250 people.  So, this will be a pretty intimate setting.

I saw the BB in '85, then saw Brian for the PS tour and Smile tour (twice each).  This will be something special.

And yes, this is my first post.

I’ll be there with my wife and a friend.  First time for my friend to see them.  He’s funny because he’s a casual fan, but knows the Love You album by heart because as a child in the 70’s, it was one of his first purchases.   He keeps saying, hope they play Johnny Carson.  I said, no way, buddy.  He says, maybe they’ll play ding dang…it will only take a minute…  I laugh.

This show got me thinking of my own history of BB’s concerts.  I’ve only become a fan since the mid 90’s.

01.    Brian Wilson w/ Paul Simon – summer 2001 at Hershey – Met Brian and Melinda and got an autograph.  Pretty much, I thanked him for everything and he said thank you back.  Melinda sat beside him and there was hardly any security.  My wife says that I was totally star struck and after getting the autograph, stood behind the line and simply stared at him for 5 minutes.  I remember thinking how tall he was when he walked to the table in front of me, how much hair he had and when I shook his hand, it jolted through my body that THIS was the hand that wrote Pet Sounds/Smile.  Yeah, I was obsessed.

02.   Beach Boys (Mike/Bruce) – July 2002 in Salsbury, MD – Front row, I clearly remember our ears were SHOT after this show, right in front of a loud speaker.  My fault, I know.  Also, a man threw a stuffed bear on stage for Mike to sign.  Mike looked at it to sign it and saw he already had signed it 20 years earlier.  The man acknowledged this and wanted a 2nd signature.  Mike threw it back and said no way, already did it.

03.   Brian Wilson – Summer 2002 – Philly, PA – Pet Sounds Tour – Standing room only, better sound than Mike/Bruce’s show and better band but Brian seemed very sleepy.  Good performance but he was yawning and rubbing his eyes the entire show.  Paid $20 for ANOTHER copy of Pet Sounds live just so I could get his autograph again.  This was less personable, BUT the band mingled through the line and I ended up talking to Jeff and getting his autograph.  He was still very ‘big’ at that time.  Also, I remember the line ran in front of the stage and I thought it was cool that Brian was using old speakers from the old Beach Boys touring days with the white Beach Boys logo sprayed on them.

04.   Beach Boys (Mike/Bruce) – August 2003 in Bethlehem, PA – Musikfest.  I remember getting a BB’s license plate at this show.  John Stamos performed with them.  It was pretty cool or at least different.  Although I may think differently now, at the time, it did add some excitement.  The crowd cheered and ooh/ahh every time John was shown on the jumbotron.

05.   Al Jardine – July 2005 – Hersheypark – This show was awesome.  Al’s younger son was great, but since Matt was not available, a singer from the CA band, Tripsitter, joined them onstage and was great.  He wore a smile shirt and I liked it.  ALSO, on top of steady Ed Carter on bass and the great Richie Cannata on sax, Mike Meros came and played with them as he lived nearby.  I believe he died not long after this performance, such a shame.  Anyways, I hung around afterwards as the show was loose and no security.  The back doors opened and everyone came out and I fulfilled my dream of talking to everyone about their music.  I remember discussing the various touring entities with Adam Jardine and Billy Hinche and when I told Billy that Al’s band is the most accurate version of the true live Beach Boys sound, he thanked me and told me to tell Al that and that he would appreciate hearing it.  Also, I was star struck meeting Richie Cannata because I’m a huge Billy Joel fan.  Lastly, I spoke one on one to Al for a couple minutes and when he was walking away, I mentioned that I enjoyed his (at the time) new song, California Energy Blues, from his live album bonus cut.  He turned back around to thank me and said he was surprised because at times it feels like no one is out there listening to this stuff.  I ensured him, we were.

06.   Brian Wilson – August 2005 – Philly, PA – Smile Tour  - I remember I had just had hernia surgery days earlier and could barely walk yet.  I was off work, mandatory sick leave and told my wife come hell or high water, I’m not missing this concert.  She drove, I limped in and plopped down and had a great time.  Great show and they encored with Walking Down the Path of Life.

07.   Beach Boys (Mike/Bruce) – July 2006 – Basically a July 4th concert with fireworks afterwards.  This was a music festival in Harrisburg and they played for free to about 15K people.  I had great seats and dragged my parents along who also had a great time.  Basically, they were friends of the governor and played a long and varied setlist.  I was a happy man.

My gosh…well, I was thinking there was more but I guess it has been nearly SIX years since I’ve seen them.   Bring on tomorrow!!

Well, if it was at the Civic Center - there are no good seats for concerts there so it's either blow out your ears or nothing.  To put it mildly, it's not  a good performance space.

Still, considering I was living about 3/4 of a mile from the place in '02, I'm surprised I can't remember this show!  I must have been in my ignore-anything-outside-of-Brian-touring mindset to pass up a show I could walk to.

It was a the Salsbury minor leagues baseball arena.  Can't remember the name of the baseball team (maybe the shorebirds?), but I think it was a big deal that they got the Beach Boys to show up.  Stage was small and not very elaborate.  I remember I got a free beach towel with their name on it and after the game, they had fireworks.  Didn't stay.

Also, regarding this venue tomorrow, my wife and I went to a venue just blocks from this casino called the Musikfest cafe that had just recently opened last June.  Very nice dinner theater atmosphere, good food and beer (sponsored by Yuengling Lagar), FANTASTIC performance by Los Lonely Boys and the stage sits against an entire glass wall with the old steel factory towers right outside the window illuminated with colorful lights.  Really nice place.  I don't think they normally get very well known acts, though.

Yup, that's Shorebird Stadium.  I remember now.

They just recently tried to stage a "Chickenstock Live!" ('cause Salisbury is the home of Perdue farms) music festival there with America, Kenny Loggins, CCR, Dionne Warwick and the Marshall Tucker Band.  Ticket prices were high, there was no re-entry and well...it didn't go very well.

He also said he didn't like Do It Again, so I doubt Bruce really gets to veto on those kinds of decisions.

Then again he also said he doesn't like the Friends album, maybe he's keeping them out of the set? :brow

Brian also clearly stated that he doesn't like Sail On Sailor. And he sings it on this tour.

Sorry but Betsy is an unexciting 50th song i agree with choice of Breakaway or airplane from Love You  Mike and Brian would sound great on that now.

ALSO BRING BACK "THIS WHOLE WORLD" !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Back for a little breather. Here's what has happened so far:

-Met Surfergirl7 before the VIP expierence. She's the female version of me, energetic and passoniate about the band  :lol

-Really like the goodie bag, especially the commerative ticket.

-Soundcheck was only a half hour but there were some cool highlights. Al sang and played Runaway for a bit and they played Kiss me Baby, Do it Again, California Girls and Little Honda. As mentioned, the backing band did Betsy right when we were lining up for the meet and greet (which sounded REALLY nice).

-Meet and Greet was short but fun. Got a picture with me, my dad and the band. I told them it was an honor to meet them but they didn't hear me (in Brian's defense, I was near his bad ear  :lol). David Marks did yawn in my dad's face by accident and apologized   :)

That's all for now. Gonna go line up soon for the concert.

Amazing...absolutely amazing  :-D Setlist from memory (not chronologically, memory not that great   :lol).

1st set
Do it Again
Catch a Wave
Hawaii (Dave sounded great)
When I Grow Up (to be a man)
Kiss me Baby (Highlight. Mike and Brian harmonizing VERY well)
Please Let me Wonder (another song Brian knocked out of the park)
You're so Good to Me
409
Be True to your School (Mike did the WHEEEEEEEEEEEN. Loved it  :lol)
Little Deuce Coupe
Little Honda
I get Around (highlight for Mike)
Surfin' Safari
Don't Back Down
Don't Worry Baby (FANTASTIC vocal from Jeff)
Cotton Fields
Then I Kissed Me

2nd set
Wouldn't it be Nice (Fantastic. Jeff delivered a GREAT vocal and he and Al were balanced VERY well).
I Just Wasn't Made for these Times
Sloop John B
God Only Knows (Heartbreaking moment seeing Brian constantly look at the screen with this and Forever. You can tell he misses them really bad).
Heroes and Villains (Good vocal. Brian sang "Bicycle rider"  ;D)
Good Vibrations
Add Some Music (Moment of the show. Brian was heard more clearly then the others. He flashed a HUGE smile through a good chunk of it. He was soaking this up for sure).
Marcella
All this is That (Great overall performance. From what I can tell, Brian and Darian are doing Carl's part with Darian more audiable. The end part of Carl's was done by some bald guy on guitar. I don't know his name   :lol)
It's OK (Meh. Doesn't work in the lower key imo)
Rock and Roll Music
Surfin' USA
Forever
All Summer Long
That's Why God Made the Radio (Another great all around performace)

Encore:
Barbara Ann (A TON of fun)
Kokomo
Fun, Fun, Fun (Al, Mike, and Bruce all saw me signing my head off and pointed  :-D)

Notes:
-Had a seat in the second row not far from SurferGirl7
-Ended up getting a ton of pictures
-Ended up shelling the money for the autograph program. Yes, I am insane lol.
-Dad and I got right up in front of the stage...and Dad was able to snag the pick Al used for the encore! Gotta find a holder for it pronto  :afro

All and all, one of the best expierences of my life. This band still has it.

Just got back from this - I'm exhausted and will probably post more later, but that was the best concert experience I've ever had.
Intimate setting, technically it was sold out, but there were several empty seats in some of the rows in front of me.
Met the lovely SurferGirl7 - among other Beach Boys fans I hadn't known previously.
Mainly an older crowd (one of the Rip Chords was in attendance!), but saw a couple younger people.

Mike impressed me the most, he REALLY does sound like he's 20.
Brian looked uninterested when he wasn't doing a lead - at one point he actually yawned - but when he sang lead, hot damn was he on fire!!!!!! Nailed every one of his tunes. NO AUTOTUNE!

Also...(I'm trying not to fall asleep so I don't forget stuff!)

When the Carl tribute was playing, I watched Brian - he kept looking at the screen, watching his brother. It was really touching.

I hope audio and/or video pops up, I know the venue was pretty strict about that.
They sound so much better live than they do on QVC or the other TV appearances. At times, they cut the music out and it's just this block of incredible harmony - the phrase that popped into my head several times was "wall of sound". The vocals just surround you. Stunning.

Just got home from Bethlehem. Some random thoughts....

- Met Wrightfan, met the guy who did the Purple Chick SMiLE, and sat next to SurferGirl7, in Row 2

- We were standing in line in the lobby while the sound check was going on; you could hear them rehearsing "It's OK", we missed about half of it, waiting for all the V.I.P. people to sign in so we could all filter in together.

- Brian wasn't very active during the sound check, but when he did offer a suggestion - and he did make a few - everything got quiet and his suggestion WAS listened to. He was teaching them a harmony part for "Kiss Me, Baby", which they performed during the show. It sounded tremendous. There was quite a bit of good-natured joking around during the sound check, between ALL of the band. Scott Totten would then reign them in.

- Also during the sound check they did a casual "Runaway". After the Beach Boys left the sound check, the band stayed and rehearsed "Ballad Of Ole' Betsy"

- The Meet And Greet lasted 20 seconds. Seriously. A couple of the Beach Boys were still in their pre-concert wardrobe. Bruce was in shorts! Jeff was there telling the guys when to smile.

- The concert started at 7:30 on the button. It was over at 10:30 on the button. There was an intermission of 20 minutes.

- Brian sang AND played keyboards on every song. It might've been simple playing or just background singing, but he participated on every song. He didn't look that disinterested, but he certainly wasn't reeling and rocking or clapping or snapping his fingers. But he was THERE. All of his lead vocals were good with the exception of "You're So Good To Me"; he shouted most of it and some of those notes he struggled with. He was very, very good on "Please Let Me Wonder", "California Dreamin'", "Sail On Sailor", "Heroes And Villains", "Marcella", and he nailed "I Just Wasn't Made For These Times". His lead on "Do You Wanna Dance" was also surprisingly strong. And, his lead on "Sloop John B" was also great. Oh, and Brian does sing an important part of "All This Is That". He also sang Dennis' part at the end of "It's OK".

- There were some unsold V.I.P. seats.

- I have seen several configurations of Beach Boys and their backing bands - live - since 1978. But I never saw a bunch of guys enjoying themselves as much as this group of musicians. A lot of smiling, laughing, inside jokes, they all sing, the Beach Boys interact with the backing band, Darian especially was having a great time.

- Mike gave a nice introduction to "Forever". I thought the Knebworth "God Only Knows" sounded slightly sped up; something wasn't quite right with it. Brian was fixated on the screen, watching Carl. He didn't look at the Dennis "Forever" pictures nearly as much.

- They did "Add Some Music" around the piano to open the 2nd set. Brian was into it. It was a nice moment.

- Mike was having a ball. He was in his element. You can just tell he loves this. Mike didn't make much contact with Brian. It must be the sound system and microphones because Mike sounded exceptionally strong, after sounding not quite as strong the previous night on QVC. Mike was simply great with his lead vocals - all of them. And he was funny as usual; a few new one-liners. And he found a babe to dance with during "Surfer Girl". Mike looks great for 71. Mike and Al seemed to be getting along well, they were communicating a lot with each other.

- "Why Do Fools Fall In Love" was impressive, as was "Don't Back Down". "Cottonfields" was tremendous. I think they should drop "You're So Good To Me". Something wasn't quite right with "Good Vibrations". "Rock And Roll Music" rocked. Really rocked.

- Of the 3 or 4 times I've heard TWGMTR live now, this was the best version. They've got it down now.

- Do you know who was the dark horse star of the show? Scott Totten. That son of a gun played some stunning guitar - acoustic, a Fender like David's, and a twelve string. His singing was as good anybody's. Some times I heard this great singing and I'd look around, and it was Scott. Sometimes I heard this great guitar, and it was Scott. He also did that cool, Dick Dale sliding riff on "Little Honda" and Jeff gave him a little nod and smile. Basically, Scott reminded me a lot of Carl Wilson.

- By the end of the show, I had a stiff neck. There was so much to watch, and I was trying to grasp it all. Who is singing that part? Who is playing that? Who is harmonizing on that? I was fixated on Brian, then I'd have to shift to the other side of the stage because Bruce was doing something. Then back to David, and then back to Cowsill or Darian. There was so much going on. Mertens was all over the stage with his sax.

- Bruce did an OK version of "Disney Girls", but he did nail that final high note. The other Beach Boys had left the stage, but Brian stayed at the piano; it almost looked like he fell asleep. At the end of "Disney Girls", Bruce said, "Brian likes that song."

- Brian strapped on the bass for the last two songs, "Barbara Ann" and "Fun, Fun, Fun". Honestly, he looked very uncomfortable, and it made me uncomfortable. He was not "with it" for those two numbers. He was wearing these black Adidas sweat pants, like 30 years ago, and they were falling down, and...oh well.

- This was approximately the 30th time I've seen the Beach Boys - in various configurations. I know I say after every concert, "That was the best one." But, I believe that THIS SHOW was the best Beach Boys' concert I have ever attended. OK, this might be the last Beach Boys tour with Brian. I can kind of see that, I just have that feeling. But, with Dave and Al back in the fold, and with this band - these guys are really tight and seem to be having a ball - it would be a darn shame if they shut this down and called it quits after this tour. They really have something special to offer. Yes, you could feel the loss of Carl; it was strange not seeing him there; he belonged there. But I couldn't ask for anything more than what they gave tonight.

Wonderful review Sherrif! I still have to wait for more than two months, but reading about the shows nearly every morning surely builds up my anticpations.

IMO 'Ballad of ole Betsy' would be a great addition to the live repertoire. Scott sings it great and if Jeff gets a lead, well, Scott deserves one too. :-). I hope they'll keep up with rotating songs every night to keep things fresh. Hopefully other early tunes to add will be Custom Machine and Drive-In. As for more recent material I'm hoping for You Still Believe in Me, Break Away or California Saga (Hey, Al deserves more leads too). In Europe Tears in the Morning is very popular so it might get in there instead of RnRM or California Dreaming. Til I Die or Surf's up are probably the stuff of dreams I'd say.

This whole tour has been a dream come through already!

The show was amazing. I agree with many of the observations above ... Brian did a terrific job on most of his lead vocals though it's true that he seemed incredibly uncomfortable during the last two numbers holding the bass. Mike. Al and Dave were particularly impressive. And I did not expect to hear "Kiss Me Baby." That blew me away.

And TWGMTR indeed sounded tight. And it was incredibly touching to see Brian gazing at Carl on the screen during "God Only Knows."

I'm so glad I got to see this. I'll never forget this one.

It's amazing how they sounded SO much better than I'd seen them on any TV appearance. I guess it's a "you have to be there" thing, or maybe they were just really on last night, but if they could convey that sound on their appearances, they'd sell A LOT more records! Last night was like a religious experience - it almost doesn't seem real. Like, there's the guys you fanboard about every day - they're actually right in front of you!

I disagree with a poster above - I dug "You're So Good To Me". Even the songs I didn't think I cared so much about (Why Do Fools Fall in Love, Don't Back Down) sounded tremendous live.

Scott Totten is excellent, seems to be an unsung hero of this tour - he's certainly been very good when I've seen the Mike & Bruce BB's. And the contribution of David Marks cannot be measured !

Amazing...absolutely amazing  :-D Setlist from memory (not chronologically, memory not that great   :lol).

1st set
Do it Again
Catch a Wave
Hawaii (Dave sounded great)
When I Grow Up (to be a man)
Kiss me Baby (Highlight. Mike and Brian harmonizing VERY well)
Please Let me Wonder (another song Brian knocked out of the park)
You're so Good to Me
409
Be True to your School (Mike did the WHEEEEEEEEEEEN. Loved it  :lol)
Little Deuce Coupe
Little Honda
I get Around (highlight for Mike)
Surfin' Safari
Don't Back Down
Don't Worry Baby (FANTASTIC vocal from Jeff)
Cotton Fields
Then I Kissed Me

2nd set
Wouldn't it be Nice (Fantastic. Jeff delivered a GREAT vocal and he and Al were balanced VERY well).
I Just Wasn't Made for these Times
Sloop John B
God Only Knows (Heartbreaking moment seeing Brian constantly look at the screen with this and Forever. You can tell he misses them really bad).
Heroes and Villains (Good vocal. Brian sang "Bicycle rider"  ;D)
Good Vibrations
Add Some Music (Moment of the show. Brian was heard more clearly then the others. He flashed a HUGE smile through a good chunk of it. He was soaking this up for sure).
Marcella
All this is That (Great overall performance. From what I can tell, Brian and Darian are doing Carl's part with Darian more audiable. The end part of Carl's was done by some bald guy on guitar. I don't know his name   :lol)
It's OK (Meh. Doesn't work in the lower key imo)
Rock and Roll Music
Surfin' USA
Forever
All Summer Long
That's Why God Made the Radio (Another great all around performace)

Encore:
Barbara Ann (A TON of fun)
Kokomo
Fun, Fun, Fun (Al, Mike, and Bruce all saw me signing my head off and pointed  :-D)

Notes:
-Had a seat in the second row not far from SurferGirl7
-Ended up getting a ton of pictures
-Ended up shelling the money for the autograph program. Yes, I am insane lol.
-Dad and I got right up in front of the stage...and Dad was able to snag the pick Al used for the encore! Gotta find a holder for it pronto  :afro

All and all, one of the best expierences of my life. This band still has it.

They sell an autographed tour program?  How much $?

And the contribution of David Marks cannot be measured !

Thank you for mentioning that; I forgot to note it in my post. David sang harmony on almost every song, and lead on "Hawaii". In was really cool; we have these songs ingrained in our heads, and you knew when a guitar solo was coming. And, David - wearing his aviator shades - would come to the front of the stage and just nail that solo! A minor quibble...David's guitar should be turned up more in the mix. He was playing these amazing parts, but they were kind of buried. One time I did see David motion to the sound guy to turn him up. Oh, and David was the smiliest for the Meet And Greet pictures.

I agree. I noticed this throughout the show. I also thought they could have brought Jeff Foskett's vocal mic up a bit in the mix too. Just a hair... It was a little too difficult to make out the lead on "Don't Worry Baby," not to mention some of his backup parts... at least from where I was sitting.

And I bought one of the Jardine CDs as well. It was nice to get some kind of autographed item so inexpensively... and I still had never owned or listened to the album anyway, so this was perfect for me.

I thought we were collectively bummed out about Jeff being too high up in the mix at the first 2-3 reunion appearances and worried about a "Jeff Foskett feat. The Beach Boys" tour in 2012?  ;D

Judging from the YouTube clips I've seen I think that Jeff is tastefully embedded in the mix.

Yeah, Jeff was really in the background most of the show. He was always right on with the high parts, and he handled them effortlessly, but he wasn't overbearing by any means. And, while he played a lot of guitar, all of the leads were done by David and Scott.

I was trying to watch the interplay between Brian and Jeff, and, Brian didn't need much help staying on cue, having Jeff double him, or having Jeff "pick up" for him if/when Brian lost his way. I think I counted two times where Jeff came to the rescue. Other than Mike, Brian had the most lead vocals. Jeff just kind of minded his own business; he was making eye contact more with Scott and Bruce.

I wonder if we'll see Break Away on this tour...

Edit: very short clip, but man, Brian looks really into this live:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sT5bBCOpn6I

Bruce clearly stated that he hates that song so it might not happen.

Well artists are sometimes critical of some of their best works but I really don't know, it's a mystery to me too. How Bruce can dislike the one-two punch of Friends and "Do It Again" is beyond me but to each their own.

Sorry, but I don't have much respect for a professional writer who has several typos in a text he put online, doesn't know the name of the "backup guy" who took various leads, states that Wilson strapped on a guitar and generally relies on the same dumb lyrics references to stylize his writing. Also, he doesn't seem to know much about the BBs to begin with.

Hahaha....First, the guy states that the guys played 46 songs. 46 songs! Then he complains that 2 - a whole 2 - were sung by a backing band member. Scott Totten did a great lead falsetto to "Why Do Fools Fall In Love", but The Beach Boys were just as impressive with their background vocals.

I've always said this about baseball, after suffering through more than one insufferable "fan" in the next row for nine innings, that people should have to pass a written test before they're allowed into a stadium if they plan on commenting during the game, or certainly before being allowed to write about it. Same should be applied to dingbats like this fellow regarding music concerts. Well, at least I learned one thing I didn't know - Brian hasn't performed with them since 1984.

I'm working from memory too (still fresh).  99.99% sure on the songs, but the order is fuzzy for me.  They played everything that they played at White Plains/Westchester with the addition of Don't Back Down for a total of 46 songs.  (Songs that were played at earlier shows but not at Bethlehem:  Little Girl I Once Knew, Wendy, This Whole World).
