I'll bet they do That's why god made the radio.  Everybody get their Autotune detectors ready, LIVE T.V., in HIGH DEF, you're going to have something to bitch about for WEEKS.

I have heard all the youtube clips, and someone in the high range is off--Brian or Jeff or a backup guy or Dave maybe; al, mike and Bruce are right on it. So whatever they do, I hope they sound sweet and in tune, with help from technology or not. It's a hard song to master live, with so many hard parts.  Can anyone pick out the problems I am hearing from the shows so far?

I hope they get good sound support and precise focus on each vocal line.

good luck BB.

also. is that show live? no, taped, eh?  where are the Boys today? taping now?

Taped.  Likely this afternoon, but I'm not sure.  Brian will likely have his TV face on (deer in the headlights), but his vocal parts are in his range, and will probably be doubled by the man who shall remain nameless.  They've got four other Beach Boys faces that the camera can focus on, so I think it'll be alright.  Fallon will treat 'em right.

Yes, they will be playing their new single, and yes there will be pitch correction. Almost all TV performances utilize it.

Fallon tapes around 5 or 5:30 EST in New York, if I remember. So lucky fans who live in NYC and don't have to be at work this afternoon (or who are on vacation) can try to go to NBC studios Rockefeller Center and they might either catch a glimpse of the Boys entering and/or leaving the studio or they might be able to score a pass by waiting in line if they need to fill any seats for no-shows.

I hope Fallon has another musical impression worked up, Beach Boys related if there can be such a thing. He's one of the best comedy/music impressionists working today. His video of the Doors doing "Reading Rainbow" was genius, as was his Neil Young and a few others he does in smaller productions. The Tim Tebow "Tebowie" was popular but I think his Morrison and Neil were tops.

For those outside the US his show puts past episodes and clips on their website, so if you miss it, it will soon be available.

And Fallon's sound guys are very good, I have never heard a band guesting on his show plagued by audio problems other than those of their own creation, like bad singing or whatever. Just sayin'.

Completely agree with you there - his Neil was solid gold. I also think he nailed Dylan as well. Yeah, I guess that's low-hanging fruit, but still. Gotta check out "Reading Rainbow" now!

Agree Dylan is "low hanging fruit" impression-wise (he's the Jimmy Cagney -- you dirty rat -- of his generation) but Fallon's take is uncanny.  Fallon is very likeable, but I think his musical comedy skills make his strongest talent.

Song predictions -- "Radio" best bet.  "GV" or "Do It Again" 10:1 each.  Something from Pet Sounds 20:1, Smile 40:1.  Barbara Ann 50:1.

And yes Brian will look "uncomfortable".  Mike will point.  Will Bruce wave?

That's cool! Are you in the Philly area too?

And remember he was Tweeting about the Smile Sessions box a few months ago, I posted some of those messages in a thread here, somewhere. Obviously he's a big fan - this adds a neat subtext to the appearance tonight. We have to consider how many people who would not normally be buying a Smile Sessions box set went out and bought it after hearing Questlove praise it as a goldmine of samples. Who knows how many producers, DJ's, or beatmakers took that advice and are currently creating a new classic in their studio based on a Beach Boys/Smile sample?

Fallon likes to make a big fuss over any band coming through of "legendary status"...they'll no doubt play TWGMTR after the short interview and then probably come back at the end of the show and do an oldie (a Pet Sounds cut, as we're led to believe) as the credits roll.

I have to mention something that *may* be a possibility judging from earlier Fallon shows.

The band rehearses in the afternoon as shown in that Facebook photo. I don't know how often this happened, but once in particular they actually made the rehearsal footage available. Ice Cube was sitting in with The Roots that night, and as a warm-up/fun thing to play, they busted out NWA's "Straight Outta Compton". Roots guitarist Captain Kirk *nailed* the Easy E vocal, and the whole performance was electric. Someone shot a video on their phone (if I remember), Questlove Tweeted a link to the video, it went viral, and eventually they got so many requests that Fallon aired the rehearsal video on his show.

So if...just *if*...they bust out a Pet Sounds or Smile cut off-air, which would be absolutely cool as anything - it could still reach the fans, no matter what they actually do on the show.

Fallon, unlike some other hosts, is a true musician and a music fan who is respectful and knowledgeable about the artists he hosts on his show. I trust there may be a bit more to this than the usual stock appearance where they do one tune and split.

At least I hope there will be more... :-D

In that rehersal photo, the BB are right there, front and center; I hope they do an intimate version of TWG, with clearly attributable parts, with camera time for each major part and with the backup band doing only the wordless humm at various ranges.  I don't want any risky falsettos from anyone. This is the way/chance to make this song a hit.

Oh boy. . . . .12 hours away, but I suppose NY will see it 3 hours before.

I am staying off this discussion until I see it for myself at my time.

Fallon is a GREAT musical impressionist who can not only imitate but also has a really nice singing voice that makes his impressions all the better. But he's not a great interviewer. Effusive and reverential as he is to his guests, he gets hyper and nervous. It adds to the charm of his nice-guy persona, but sometimes it's a bit unnerving. I just hope that goes over okay with Brian. Maybe he'll sing with them instead.

A little more info from Michael Shoemaker, former SNL producer & now executive producer on Late Night...

Fascinating to watch Brian Wilson tell stories and teach @jimmyfallon harmonies on Barbara Ann.

"Hey guys, I know we're playing our new slick, play-it-safe single tonight, but what d'you say we go over 'Cabinessence' a time or two? Just for old time's sakes, whaddyasay?"

Al, a train, come on, it's gotta sound like a train, a locomotive, the iron horse? You're not sounding enough like a train. Jimmy really luvs us a lot and wants us to play one of our REAL songs cuz he's a real music fan, and you're not really nailing it like you should be, Al. Come on, it's gotta be perfect. We gotta do this one right for Questlove too because he also luvs us. When he was tweeting about us on Twitter about that Smile box set thing, he was tagging all his tweets with #petsounds cuz it's the illest album EVER. So, let's go, let's make this happen, people! From the top, please.

Well, nice mention by Bill O'Rielly just now saying the BB are at the top of his must see concerts this Summer. But I would have expected Bill to include Al, in mentioning that Brian Wilson is back with the band.  Based on his expressed love for the group over the years, he should have known better.

That would be great.  This should be good.  I loved when Macca was on Fallon about a year and a half ago and they sang "Scrambled Eggs", which was hilarious.

By the way, I'd be curious to know the last time Brian was on a show like this (comedy type show, live studio audience, etc.) where he wasn't just a musical guest.

It's very rare for any late night talk show to *open* with a band performance. And having Mike and Brian together in the interview segment...I think the word "epic" would apply here.

Still can't believe how the show opened with In My Room, just terrific. Pure Beach Boys vocals, what many of us have wanted to see for many years.

Watch the online videos with headphones on - the way they have the vocals panned and mixed, you can almost pick out each of the voices and members. I'll say again, the way this was mixed is terrific, we haven't gotten this kind of sound from the concert clips, not even close. I heard no Autotune or digital stuff on any of the three performances.

Now waiting patiently for the Brian-Mike interview...

A very warm interview. Brian and Mike play off of each other nicely, kinda like old guys tellin' war stories.

Brian reminds me of an old attorney who shared a space at our office. Big, stocky feller in his 70's - didn't always talk much, but one look into his eyes and you could see a mischievous glint, and a story comin' on.

I also liked that pretty much everyone sang every line ...

And no f*cking autotune, and it sounded f*cking fine. Take that, f*cking Joe fucking Thomas.

But that's fine. Yes, Brian was flat. That's how he sounds. That's how the guys sound. It's fine, and the passion they put into it more than made up for any technical deficiencies.

I would rather have a thousand "shaky" performances like that than a single one of the robo-Bri monstrosities perpetrated by the road crew.

This is how it's done.

Al's voice is just wonderful live. In the studio, I think Brian sounds lovely, and I'm sure Mike will sound pretty good on the record, but I gotta say Al sounds just like his younger self, even live. It's amazing.

"In My Room" was a superb start to the show.
Brian and Mike interview was decent enough.
"That's Why God Made The Radio" was a spotty performance and dragged a little too long.
"Wouldn't It Be Nice" was a great closer, even if half the band flubbed the second verse.

All in all a pretty good appearance.

Indeed a few shaky moments in both of the last two songs, but it's to be expected - that's live performance. I missed "In My Room", didn't know it would air as it did. They sounded great on the last couple songs, though. Any "shaky"ness was welcomed, as the mix was pretty good (and on a fucking late night TV show, of all places!) and I heard nothing remotely artificial going on.

Ditto on the autotune. Do it live, as Bill-O once said ;)

I heard some rough patches on TWGMTR, but overall it was solid. There's so many voices weaving in and out, it's hard to focus on just 'who' sings lead at any given time, but I think that the song made a sweet impression - especially on the accapella final chord. Solid on the chord.

WIBN rounded things out nicely. So fine to see the 'Boys get their due and love on a teevee show.

Yes, Carson did 90 minutes out of that studio in New York until the show moved to Hollywood I think in '72 or '73 and it eventually got cut down to 60 minutes.

Nice to hear what song they did on Carson, I don't recall hearing that info before. or maybe I did and forgot... :-D

I've seen all of those guys live in so many various configurations. This show was not all about BW so much as the Beachboys and their respective bands and vocalists ALL IN ONE PLACE!  Al, Bruce, David, Mike, Darian, Jeff, Scott and Scotty, Mr Cowsill, the Wondermints...all in one KILLER show!

At this point, who could ask for more?

Sure, it was not perfect, but if you ask me, real live vocals just give the performances a natural energy, autotuning destroys that feeling.

The band has always used the studio as a kind of super-megaphone for the voices. And as you say, the live performances have always been different. And we can see that in a three song live set, where Brian essentially sings lead on two of the three tunes, they were able to do a respectable job with well over 50 percent (sometimes up to 90 percent) of the vocal weight being carried by the five main guys. This is far better than Brian usually does with his own band on TV appearances!

Al got some really good close-ups on Radio & Wouldn't It Be Nice.  Also funny to hear him yell out "Yee-hoo!" at the end of Radio. Brian was really hunching his shoulders up during Radio, too. Looks like Bruce & David wore the same shirts they wore in St. Augustine when the show was filmed.

And thanks for the Johnny Carson info. Sad that the footage is probably lost.

Man, i wish the studio recording of TWGMTR sounded like it did tonight on the show--rawer and even a little pitchy. Much better bass tone too. And why on earth, when it goes into the tag, couldn’t they use a drum hit like they had tonight, rather than that cavernous 80s Joe Thomas sh*t? The whole song just sounded so much better than the recording, sheesh. Give me rough, unprocessed vocals any day over processed gloss.

WIBN, on the other hand, i thought was really, really weak. It sounded like a county fair tribute band. In My Room sounded good though. It’s probably because the original arrangement is easy enough to pull off live. The WIBN arrangement on the other hand, no way.

During the PBS interview for the Gershwin album, Brian closed his eyes when he didn't want to talk about a subject or answer a question. He still was able to come up with something. Tonight, the same thing happened, but he had Mike sitting next to him to handle it. It's so obvious that Brian doesn't want to answer questions he's not comfortable with and closing his eyes again tonight confirms that. And that's fine. He knows how to deal with it. It happened a couple of times. You can't possibly miss it.

The more I take in all of what happened, the word I'm using is bittersweet. It was a bittersweet night that feels a lot has come full circle, and some things have happened and are happening which were once thought impossible. This one show - I never thought I'd see Brian and Mike interviewed like that, and I definitely never thought I'd see them get a three-song set and an interview on late night TV - in that format, it's unheard of.

It says a lot about the respect the Beach Boys really do have out there, and I felt like Fallon interviewing Mike and Brian was like one of us fans, just smiling and giddy the whole time, and is probably tonight asking his wife "Did I really just sing harmony with Mike and Brian???" like him singing with McCartney last year...just living that ultimate fan dream of being up there next to those people you thought were untouchable and the coolest people in the universe.

It's good but it's bittersweet, that's all I can think of.

Fantastic.

Anyone who could watch that show tonight and still profess to "hate" Mike Love has a cold, cold heart.

The guy took pretty much every opportunity he could to praise Brian to the skies, showed a great deal of compassion to him throughout their appearance, and out of three songs, none even featured him as the main vocalist.

Mike strikes me as the proudest Beach Boy. He actually listens to the radio just to hear the same  BB songs that he's performed millions of times. That's weird but kind of touching.

When he says he's happy to be up there with the other guys, singing their hearts out, he means it. You could actually see that fire in all five of them tonight, even Brian.

This is my impression from watching just the clips online (don't have TV at home)

"In My Room" was good, Brian's voice very prominent in the mix.

I always feel anxious watching interviews of my favorite artists on late-night, nervous that someone is going to say something awkward.  This interview was good, and it was cool to see Mike & Brian laughing together, but my one qualm: why wasn't Al there?  I feel like Al is being treated like a second-string Beach Boy, which he is definitely not.  It was great to see Mike helping Brian on and off the stage.

"That's Why God Made The Radio".  There were moments of brilliance, and also some cringeworthy moments for me...Brian was very flat at times, and it seemed to throw the other vocalists off somewhat.  Also, Brian's shrugging was really awkward.  But I agree with the posters who say they'd rather hear off vocals than autotune.

"Wouldn't It Be Nice" was the best of the 3 performances, even with the lyrical mess-up.  Al and Jeff did great, glad to see Al featured on a lead.  Mike's part on the bridge was great as well...his best lead on a televised appearance in a long time!

Overall, a great appearance, so glad that Jimmy gave the Beach Boys the time they deserve.  I think overall it came off well to the general viewer, and I think there will be more than a few people who will buy the album and/or watch a concert as a result!   :)

As much as I enjoyed the performances and the interview...watching Brian out there, looking like he REALLY didn't want to be taking part, either during the performances or interview - kinda made me feel sad (when he closed his eyes during the interview or he looked extremely uncomfortable during the performances, especially WIBN, when he was just jamming the piano keys and looking off screen). I just hope that he's in to doing the tour and promo appearances and it's not just a thing that his handlers are making him do.

Well, don't mean to pee in anyone's breakfast cereal, because that would just be weird. I was only mentioning a thought that perhaps Brian wasn't up for all this publicity. But hey, if he's enjoying it and it's what he wants to do, great. IMO, it just hasn't seemed like that based on what I've seen/read over the last few weeks.

Just kidding (re cereal comment).  Brian never looks very comfortable out there, yet he's been doing solo shows and now these shows for over ten years.  I thought he looked really comfortable and relaxed, for him, the most relaxed I've seen him on TV.  Comparatively speaking.

He has not looked like he has enjoyed himself since he started solo. Its just the way he is. We live with it like he does.

And please don't let a great thread be derailed by what those close to him may or may not make him do. Thats NOT what tonight should be about.

In my room - speechless.

That's Why -  go go, Bruce - he was great.  Mike was really starin' down the camera, pretty engaging

WIBN - Yay, Al, yay Mike - loved Brian's goofy smile towards the end, he looked like '63 Brian

Yeah, Dave on all of them, and the band is smokin'!

Watchin' it again!!!

Well said that man! Am still, um, smiling... and didn't the organ at the start of TWGMTR sound soulful? Bit like in Soul Searching...

"Wouldn't It Be Nice" was a great closer, even if half the band flubbed the second verse.

Flubbing the lyrics to that song is something of a tradition with the BBs.

A really great showing.

The beginning was perfect, from the lighting to the actual introduction.  No frills or band biography, just Jimmy Fallon saying "Ladies and gentleman, the Beach Boys...", which is all that really needs to be said.  Picking "In My Room" to begin was a stroke of genius.  Surprising, but a perfect choice for an intimate setting like that.  Plus, while it's well-known, it's not one you hear as often as other classics, so that was really nice.

And, of course, we finally get to hear mostly all Beach Boys vocals, mixed well.  They sounded great.  Brian sang those first few lines very sweetly and the rest of the band sounded great.  An astounding way to begin and I'd argue that it's one of their best moments in a long time.  Beautiful.

Jennifer Connelly is hot.

The interview was fun.  Jimmy Fallon isn't a great interviewer (then again, it's late night, who is?), but his style worked perfectly.  He seems to have a decent knowledge of the band and their music and it's nice to see Brian and Mike interviewed as just two guys, instead of going into the same repetitive B.S. about previous band troubles or Brian's history.  The Elvis story was great, watching Brian teach Jimmy the harmonies to "Barbara Ann" was cool and they seemed in good spirits.  It's nice to see that side of them.

While I loved "In My Room", admittedly, I thought "That's Why God Made The Radio" was mostly a train wreck vocally.  Pretty flat throughout and some cringeworthy moments that likely won't win many casual fans.  However, I did find myself enjoying the song more with the organic, intimate vibe.  Musically and vocally, there seemed to be far more realism to it.  While the studio version isn't "Imagination", I do think the song is too slick and lacks a warmth and intimacy, which seemed to be brought out tonight.  Would have liked to have seen more of that vibe on the single.

I thought they rebounded very nicely on "Wouldn't It Be Nice".  Al sounded great, which is all the more reason why I didn't think he needed to be doubled on it.  In fact, I think all the doubling made things sound a bit sloppy.  But it was a fine performance and a great way to close.

You really have to give a lot of credit to Jimmy Fallon.  Not only did he give the band the opportunity and time they deserve, but they were treated with respect.  Nearly anyone would give them a song or so at the end, maybe a brief interview.  But to pre-empt the credits, get a full interview, along with two more songs?  You can probably count with one hand how many times that happens.  It was a very classy affair and just so well done.  Props to Fallon for doing that, not just for the Beach Boys, but for quite a few classic groups during his show's run.  A great night for the band and for the fans.  I'm very excited.

Mike Love is on fire.....

"Can you teach me Barbara Ann"

"THAT AIN'T NO THING"

And another for the Brianisms....

Brian: Is that our album? Wow! It's the first time I've seen our album!

 :lol

The performances are cool - most lols come from the entire band RAMMED onto that tiny stage  :lol TWGMTR was a little rubato, shall we say. WIBN and In MY Room make me giggle like a hyperactive kid. The Beach Boys are back!!!

Also, isn't Mike and Brian holding hands the CUTEST?

Oh, and what struck me: Mike was extremely supportive of Brian, helped him in various ways, and there was not one nanosecond where I thought: he's not entirely genuine here, or it's out of some marketing goal. He meant it 110%.

Extremely touching.

I tried SO hard to stay up for this last night (says a lot about network tv these days but moreso about me lol) but woke up to a televangelist show at 6am instead.. only to find it was ALL over the net within hours, of course most of the headlines were "Brian Wilson hasn't even seen the new album."  ::) Needless to say I didn't even click those. THIS link however, (I hope it's ok to post this, it seems to fit within the guidelines) has the entire interview, all 3 performances, and in excellent sound. I hadn't noticed it shared yet and wanted to put it out there:

http://thenjunderground.com/blog/2012/5/8/watch-beach-boys-appear-on-fallon.html (http://thenjunderground.com/blog/2012/5/8/watch-beach-boys-appear-on-fallon.html)

Agree with nearly everything said in this thread and am seriously digging how positive everyone is, THIS is what this 50th is all about..and I still think "Celebration" would have been a great album title, but I'm sure the reasons for not using it have been discussed, my apologies if I missed it, I've had an extremely rough time of it lately.. The only thing making it all worthwhile was seeing the Raleigh, NC 50th show, which was a dream come true and though Mike/Bruce were great last I saw them in `01, nothing could touch the 4-29 show I attended with my daughter, who LOVES the Beach Boys (and not just the hits either, with me for a Daddy lol.) She turns 5 on Aug.8th btw, and asks for deep cuts by name.  :'( <-happy tears.  :lol It's a great time to be a Beach Boys fan.

Great, great show. Obviously Jimmy Fallon has a ton of respect for the BBs to have them do 3 songs plus an interview. TQGMTR was a little off, but the rest was great, and they were all trying so hard, including Brian. (Jeff was turned down in the mix a bit too.)

The interview was great. Brian and Mike seemed impressed that Jimmy's dad had sung doo-wop and I loved the Barbara Ann harmonizing attempt where Brian automatically went into his leader mode. Mike was very quick to praise Brian in all kinds of ways.

I knew Jimmy's audience was young, but when they showed them I was struck by how many appear to be under 25. They adore Jimmy and will cheer whatever he cheers, but I bet many of them were fans already, or will be after last night.

Same here, medication can really do you in, especially if you're already worn down, so I was heartbroken when I realized I'd missed it after making coffee which I rarely do in the morning, much less at night. I was more than happy to share that link as I wouldn't have even known to watch for it had I not checked the board when I got home and caught the reminder (I love this board.) :lol Good day all and enjoy the links if you missed it like some of us did, I was SO afraid I'd be looking at 30 second clips and discussion of it with no way to see it in full. I'm trying to plan to see them again July 3rd and will be more than happy to share the experience then as well.

P.S. - I'll have to comment on the actual performance later as I have to go, but I wanted to say I've seen the various boards come and go over the years (I rode in on the mid-late 90s wave of Imagination/Brian touring again, PS Box, etc when I first got internet and remember thinking "I can't believe this is really happening" and could have never imagined 15+years later we'd be getting all of *this*) and this is by far the most positive the fan community has been (I especially love the backing off of bashing Mike over the years and someone else pointed out perfectly how obvious it is that he loves Brian and isn't doing this for his ego) even when we had things like Brian finishing SMiLE and other "impossible things becoming possible" before our eyes. It's hard to find people who can discuss the Beach Boys as in depth as I like to and this board is a Godsend.

I'm very sensitive these days for all things Beach Boys, I guess. But I loved everything about this show. Including the performance of TWGMTR with all its imperfection... it is such a difficult song to do live, it gives all of them a tough job -including the backup band- and it's great that they're daring to do it. Jimmy Fallon came as a great guy you must like: really respectful, funny and nice. The interview was great, so relaxed. Having overcome the difficulties for the reunion, I guess for Brian this must feel easy a lot of the time... Just hangin' with his cousin and friends... And we got to catch a glimpse of that in the interview, so candid and lovable. Kudos to all that are making this happen.

Just watched the clips.  I clock in to work at 5:45am, so I wasn't able to stay up to watch this live, so I just watched the songs and the interview.  Blown......away.

In My Room was just perfect.  Really.  I listened through headphones as Guitarfool suggested, and the mix was fantastic.  They all looked so good.  Brian did not have his usual TV appearance blank stare, rather he seemed very focused and interested in giving a good performance, which he did.  Al and Bruce with their hands on there chests at various moments, both looking cool.  And Mike is the king of cool.

That's Why God Made The Radio was very good.  Brian had a few pitchy moments, but it did not make me appreciate the performance any less.  They were all really into it, and feeling it.  You could tell that they were all excited to be playing their new record live on national TV.  Brian was engaged, and I loved his shoulder shrugging.  It just showed that he was feeling it, and it made me shed a couple of tears of joy for all of them.

Wouldn't It Be Nice was more than nice.  The harmonies were spot on.  Brian, while not doing much on the song, was still very much into it, playing a little keys, and looking like he did want to be there and give a good performance.  Al could have been mixed slightly higher, but it was fine.

The interview was very good.  Fallon and Mike made Brian feel at ease, I think.  Mike was humble, and again, cool.  Brian did have those moments when he closed his eyes, but I don't think it was because he was uncomfortable or because he didn't want to be there.  His back appeared to have been bothering him, and he may have been dealing with pain.  Or he may have been hearing voices.  Who knows.  But he came off much better than he usually does on national TV.  And when the crowd applauded them, and Mike held his hands in a prayer-like manner, Brian just looked at the crowd and you could see how proud he was, and how grateful he was for the applause.  AWESOME.  I think this appearance on a very popular show will sell some CDs/Vinyl/downloads to a few younger folks who might not have considered buying a Beach Boys record before this.  Did I read that they will also be making a Leno appearance?  When is that scheduled?

Just a note: TWGMR's weakest spot for me were some bum notes in the harmony stack, not Brian's lead. Brian's not to blame in this case. And there's a lot of doubling, tripling and quadrupling in that song... a nice effect but can sound clumsy at times. Nothing to diminish the enjoyment of this beautiful TV appearance, though.

These "imperfect" live versions of TWGMTR we've been getting have actually made me like the song more. I'm in the category of people who are turned off by all the slick, digital-ness of the recording, so I'm enjoying listening to the live versions. Hearing the unprocessed voices try to sing the harmonies make me appreciate how difficult it actually is.

Thanks to all who posted clips. I find Jimmy Fallon to be absolutely unbearable, so I'm glad I didn't have to sit through the whole show. The Boys did great, the interview and the performances were very good. I'm still blown away by how well the promotional side of this reunion has gone, they really seem to be getting it right.

One of the best Late Night appearances Brian ever did. Good performances (especially "In My Room", great sound, great mix) and a nice interview. Mike and Brian seemed very much at ease, with each other and being interviewed. Mike has always been a good spokesman for the band, and Brian is just funny as hell.

Maybe some of the singers here can talk about this. I'm not a singer, but I can usually sing along to a lot of BBs songs pretty well. When I try to sing along with TWGMTR, I find it somewhat hard to stay on key. I know the guys are professionals and used to singing difficult material, but at their ages and with the band playing behind them (along with the fact that this is a new song they haven't been singing for decades), maybe it's just that hard. I admire them for giving it their all, live.

John Cowsill (formerly of the Cowsills, Mike & Bruce's drummer) was on the main drum kit, and Nelson Bragg (who plays with Brian's band as well as with tons of LA pop people like The Now People and Stew) was on percussion (which I *think* included a second kit on at least one song, but it was hard to tell with the way the cameras concentrated on the principals). Both of them are extraordinarily good, yes, and their interplay is fantastic.

I don't know much about music theory, but IMHO TWGMTR is pretty tricky, harmony-wise, with unusual chord changes and deceptive lines covering several half-notes... I love the slight sadness inherent in it, because of those cascades of half-notes.

Can anyone with more insight than yours truly bring a bit of enlightenment here?

*For the record, believe it or not, I think Brian was moving around a little better last night than he was when I saw them at Dodger Stadium. Not a lot, but some.  He was not even walking at the Stadium, purely shuffling his feet.

Last night's show really struck a chord with me. The Brian and Mike interview was amazing considering BB interviews of the past. It had a surprisingly nice flow throughout with some actual funny moments (not like most of the horseshit banter on late night shows) like the Elvis thing and how that was the first time Brian saw the TWGMTR album (lol). I love to listen to Brian speak nowadays and hear him say certain words or phrases that sound like the "younger Brian". He tends to slurr more often but when he's engaged and talks with more force (Like when he talks about WDFFIL for a second) you can hear that old (young) voice in him, I love it.

The performance's were just as momentous. In My Room had such an aura about it especially with Dave being there. The mix was nothing short of amazing especially since the Foskett Train has been full steam ahead and no autotune! I seriously think the person who mixed last night has been reading some of the sh*t talk on this forum because they really got it together. TWGMTR was good but rough vocally especially on the "Fallin' in love" parts, Brian was sooooooo off. My girlfriend commented "That doesn't sound like their best.." I said "Well what do the Boys or Brian really have to prove anymore? This is TWO THOUSAND AND TWELVE, the fact these guys are still performing... on television... doing a BRAND NEW song. That's all I can want or ask for." WIBN was awesome despite the lyric flub but, again, who cares? Al still wails and Mike is seeming to get a second wind vocally (Just think about the Regan performance).

Basically, I am PSYCHED to see them LIVE this Friday in Pittsburgh. Honestly, I never thought I'd have the opportunity to see my favorite band, ever. This whole Tour/Album/Celebration thing is a dream come true for any BB fanatic. There's still so much more in store, I can't wait.  :smokin

Lovely new additions here, thanks guys and girls.

I forgot to mention this:

I am quite partial to what I like to call: Mike's 'new voice'. I mean: I didn't hear him for quite some time, and his chords have become rougher - IMHO more soulful, and this effect serves well to dampen his nasality (which I sometimes found just a bit too much, say, 10 or so years ago).

Are there more folks who see it this way?

I am quite partial to what I like to call: Mike's 'new voice'. I mean: I didn't hear him for quite some time, and his chords have become rougher - IMHO more soulful, and this effect serves well to dampen his nasality (which I sometimes found just a bit too much, say, 10 or so years ago).

Are there more folks who see it this way?
Yes, these days he has this extra-deep, ultra-soulful speaking voice, and it also shows in his singing. And you're right about the decline of the nasal quality. I dig it.

Come to think of it, I like his current-day speaking voice so much, I'd love him to read the Jungle Book to me... or Peter Pan.

WIBN is played in a lower key, isn' it? What about Cottonfields, did they lower it too?

They lowered it one half step, from F major as heard on the original recording to E major as played last night. if you listen to SOT, even in 1966 I think they slowed the tape for some of those vocal sessions.

I was impressed they only needed to lower it *one half step* after 40 odd years! Some singers and bands...without naming names...transpose much more than that and it really does affect the songs being performed.

Not the BB's!  :)

I don't know what more I can add, but I recorded the show on DVR and was getting ready to fast forward to the last half of show when I suddenly saw Fallon holding the cover of the new album. What an impressive and respectful way to start the show. Perfect lighting for In My Room. To hear just the 5 guys and Foskett was perfect. As many have said, this is one of the best overall TV performances in a very long time. Mike & Brian finally look comfortable around each other again. I thought it was a nice touch that Mike helped Brian on and off the set. Fallon was very respectful, yet lighthearted during the interview. Nothing felt forced on either side. I loved Fallon's reaction to singing harmony on Barbara Ann. As for TWGMTR, I thought it came off well. Not perfect, but good enough that I didn't feel funny by the few mistakes. WIBN was wonderful. A great song to end the show and leave everyone uplifted. I also loved that The Roots played I Just Wasn't Made For These Times, and Mike seemed to appreciate it as well. I intend to send an email to Fallon and thank him from one fan to another for treating the Boys' the way he did. It was a wonderful way to wake up this morning.

It's a bit of a tricky song, without getting into the deep theory of the chords, they were going for a familiar Beach Boys songwriting and vocal style from the 1964-65 period, to my ears. The shifting chords and melody in the chorus seems to be something from Brian's influence from "Be My Baby" which he then put into California Girls and Good Vibrations, where the chords in the chorus/hook section of the song shift and change keys temporarily while the melody's phrasing remains pretty constant, moving along with the shifts in the chords, before cycling back for another verse line.

It's a technique you'll hear in several BW songs and arrangements, and even though he didn't write this one specifically, obviously they were going for a similar sound and structure to trigger a familiar BB's vibe.

As far as the chromatic/half-step notes and harmonies, in the interview last night Fallon actually touched on this when he mentioned The Four Freshmen and the BB's singing "Their Hearts Were Full Of Spring". Fallon mentioned how difficult that and that song's ending can be - it's full of chromatic phrases, shifting chords, jazzy voicings with tensions, all of that - and Brian teaching the band members to sing that kind of arrangement when they were teenagers was the foundation of them developing such a great ear for those kind of parts.

They had to *nail* those vocal parts as a group, with that blend and with the complex harmonies, and what sounds complex for most other bands is like second nature for them since they learned to sing close harmonies as kids with this kind of style.

It was a ballsy move to do that live last night, and in an era of music where vocal harmony is almost an afterthought in many styles when playing live, how many bands today could pull that off?

I thought it was great to hear them "warts and all" on TWGMTR, so to speak. It was a very real performance of a challenging song, and they stepped up to the challenge. :)

Well said.  As tough as that song must be to sing well, they did a very respectable job on it, and on national TV, where conditions are often less than ideal.  And it sounded as if everyone was singing from the heart, and that more than made up for the few bits that were a little pitchy.  Bravo, I say!

Can it be because the lead voice that carries the melody keeps switching?  In other words, one voice that carries the melody switches to a harmony part while handing off the melody part to another lead singer and taking a harmony part in the background, and so forth.  It's also the chord progression and the way it modulates, and the types of chords used, that make it complex overall.

even though he didn't write this one specifically

I'm pretty sure he did. Well, co-wrote it at least. I very much doubt that crazy chromatic chord shifting was in the song originally.

TWGMTR was good but rough vocally especially on the "Fallin' in love" parts, Brian was sooooooo off.

Brian didn't sing those parts.

Still watching the clips. Mind = officially blown.
Brian's pitch is all over the place on TWGMTR. And I love every second of it.  ;D

BTW, it's interesting that here Brian sings the high part on the "whole new generation" line, only an octave lower.

Whole new generation indeed.

who is off on TWGMTR? some rough patches in the high parts; who hears what and how do they fit it?

All in all this was the single greatest comprehensive appearance of any band on a TV show that I can remember; the BB, some lapses in the incredibly complex TWG notwithstanding, sounded better than the B singing GV on Ed Sullivan 45 years ago.

IMR may be one of the top 5 best BB performances ever recorded.  Whoever did the sound ought to be hired full time; they understand the BB better than the road sound guys for the tour, obviously. I love how Bruce sings Carl's part and Dave and Al come in for Dennis's in the famous "3-brothers' opening to the song."

The interview was the best I have seen; Fallon was a prince, a fan, an gentleman; his reverence and energy--and the fact that he gave almost the whole darn show to the BB--have made me respect and appreciate him. He was the ideal host to MC this historical event.  No credits nor commercials cut off the BB on WIBN. . . .

History records now the image of one old man offering his hand in trust and poignant frailty to his cousin for support. This will be one of the most iconic images in music cultural history. Paul and Ringo will do the same one day. . .

What next?  Will this get us on the charts?

Wow. I remain in awe.

Yes. This, 1,000 times over. What's so funny is that Jimmy is part of the Lorne Michaels empire, and SNL is notorious for bad-sounding band performances. But it seems like the Fallon crew have things together, maybe because they're handling the Roots every week and all.

I am on my 15th or so listen to TWG, and it sounds better and better each time; I think they recover from the wanderings when they sense they are losing the thread. Al does some repair work in steering it back. This song is a formal choral piece in places and needs a large choir and a conductor. I wonder if casual listeners will "like the song"? On this board we isolate every note nervously.

I have to stop wondering and let the song and performance takes its course, but I suppose I just want it to be a hit. .

by the way, do you all hear Dave's part now on the response in the chorus?  his flat "a" vowel may be more Pennsylvania than Hawthorn (think Dennis Miller's voice and accent), but I think we know what vocal line he is singing.

This observation points out how unique of an arranger Brian Wilson could be in his 20's...listen to the Pet Sounds sessions for WIBN, and many of his sessions with the Wrecking Crew in general, and there is little or no hi-hat work, ride cymbal, constant 8th note (swing or straight 8ths) tambourine, not much at all of those sounds on those tracks. The swing on WIBN came from the accordions and the rhythm guitar just killing the swing 8th feel...Hal's tom fills and the kettle drums glue it all together at the end of the phrases, along with the tambourine accents, but the way the drive of the rhythm section comes from accordions...of all things...is just brilliant.

As much as I appreciate good drumming, and good hi-hat playing from those drummers, I love the way Brian used the studio band as a whole so that any one of, say, three or four instruments could be a crucial part of the rhythmic drive and the drummer's hi-hats and cymbal work was *not* essential to it.

Genius arrangements.

Well said, I share many of the same feelings about it. I'm so impressed with the entire thing, from the songs to the interview to the sound to the whole vibe of it - it was a terrific appearance.

What may be worth noting is that the Fallon show did in fact set the bar *very, very high* for future appearances. Lest we forget not all talk shows are handled this way, and too many lapse into tired formulas of exactly how much time a band gets and what they are "allowed" to do.

Maybe by setting the bar so high, and showing this band that level of respect, the other shows will take a cue and not treat them like any other band, and obviously that sounds elitist but it's the stone cold truth.

Not to say a negative here, but the difference between that band who was the last thing on Leno's show last night transitioning into the Beach Boys singing "In My Room" was jarring, shocking, revelatory, etc...all the adjectives.

It was like seeing the Sistine Chapel in a black and white art history textbook versus going to the actual chapel to see it firsthand. The Beach Boys, men in their 70's, just *killed* with a song that is almost 50 years old. And with all due respect to that last band on Leno as he was signing off, they were so far out of their fucking league in comparison, they could have been playing in the bassist's mom's basement or something compared to the power of that first verse sung by the original Beach Boys...still not over the power of that first minute or so. Owned it!

What I was trying to get it is: nothing swings on this live WIBN. They should get that fixed. Or was this just a case of not having enough musicians? Can anybody tell how it is in concert ?

That's certainly true, but we don't need to denegrate other bands to illustrate how great the Beach Boys are.  There's a thing called "Couth", I.E. knowing something but not necessarily having to say it openly.  Anybody watching t.v. for those 10 minutes last night saw the difference between that band and the boys... and if they didn't, you'll never convince them otherwise.  Just be happy you noticed it.

Out of ALL THE FUCKING SONGS he could have got those two to break apart, he picks Barbara Ann.  EPIC FAIL

Just think.  He could have had Brian teach him the harmony to... hell... "Girls on the Beach".  "Surfin".  "Prayer".  He ANYTHING BUT BARBARA ANN.

This works so well for Brian, like others have opined it's much, much, much, hell 10 times much easier for him to do appearances with Mike.  He's literally just sitting on a couch next to his cousin.  If he wants to say something, he says something.  If he doesn't, he doesn't.  Notice about halfway through he does his sleep thing.  He closes his eyes for 10 or 15 seconds.  If he was alone, that would look so awkward, but with Mike sitting next to him doing what he does, nobody cares and Brian doesn't have to worry about it.

A big thing for me is looking for things that are timeless.  That never get old; that never change.  The relationship, musically and professionally between Brian and his cousin is exactly what it was when they started!  Mike is the frontman, he's arrogant and has an ego but it serves him well, and serves the band well... and serves Brian well.  Brian is the erratic genius, and gives the artistic integrity to the band that Mike wouldn't be able to do without him (that's an understatement, right?).

We've reached a situation in these careers that is very successful, because Mike is free to be Mike (Front and Center, running sh*t), and Brian is free to be Brian (reclusive, flighty)... and it works great.  Splash on top of that a little bit of ambition for Brian because he wants to keep his wife happy, and a little bit of charity from Mike because he wants to keep the peace... and you're left with a band that works very very well together right now.

This could continue on for years.

It was more than likely a bit that they rehearsed before hand and they picked that song because it was short and something that people would know. I hardly think that Fallon just blurted out Barbara Ann off the top of his head.

Leno.....who cares about Leno after last night? No offence but the bar has been raised too high for the format his show with the band will allow. There will be one song, Radio I figure and maybe a few words. This from the groups home town. Would probably be the same format for that type of show if JC was to agree to an interview. Silly questions for 3 minutes then cut to commercial.

My suggestion will be to watch it, get over it, then re-watch last nights clips.

Yeah, competition has produced Fallon... since Jay is king of the hill he has little reason to innovate.  When he actually tried to innovate (or was forced to) he lost his ass and the ratings went into the gutter... until he cryed and complained until he got his old spot back.

I like Jay and always have, but he's never going to change, he's very much got a 1980s style of show, and it's worked great for him for 30 years (Counting his guest stints on Carson).  Fallon has low expectations, so they let him (to a smalllllll extent) take the ball and run with it.

No huge show would have gambled with making the entire show about an old act like the Beach Boys like he did... and he was rewarded with good reviews for his bold move.

"Fortune favors the bold"

Jimmy Fallon reminds me more (much more) of early David Letterman than he does of Jay, or modern day Dave.

They've done it live in the key of E for decades.

I never said you were a new poster but Ron has been an equal opportunity grump for awhile now and dumping on many.

This is the best BB related site hands down and of course a lot of interest in the band this year will increase the flow here and we  need to encourage new members rather belittling them IMO.

Let us know if you hear back from the show. I see a staffer has compiled a top 50 list going by the site. He (Jon) may have passed on some advice for Fallon.

For all over the unsavory Mr. Positivity-hey-me-too-ness Mike has exhibited in the past, he's really come around to be a wonderful advocate of Brian's. Cool interview.

The first BBs-related special I saw was way back in the '70s, when a daring Dutch TV station showed the Lorne Michaels film (with Aykroyd and Belushi).

I was blown away, being 17 at the time.

Yesterday I was knocked off my socks by the clips from the Fallon show.

It's weird: it is as if nothing happened in between... the Fallon stuff is that good. A monument for a phenomenal band.

Period.

That was me.  I was at the Dodger Stadium performance and was taken aback by how Brian was suffing, only because I had seen him in concert, etc. many times before.  I have also had back surgery, so I know how I recovered from that, and I was only in my early 30's at the time. At the DOdger gig, he was SHUFFLING, not lifting his feet off of the ground. Not strange for one recovering from such surgery.  Although Mike was helping him on Fallon, to my eyes he is moving better. IT is a slow recovery, esp. for a man of his age. I would almost gauarntee that both a doctor and a physical therapist are on tour

I know that  :) . I was just saying if you've heard bands and singers from the 60's and 70's lower more than one half step (maybe they lower a half step for every 5 years of performance?  ;D), it can really change a song's texture in a bad way.

The Beach Boys do it in E, that's awesome.

http://social.entertainment.msn.com/music/blogs/scene-and-heard-blogpost.aspx?post=a4e1f37c-8115-4dd4-8014-b31aeb74356f&_p=baf8cc72-258e-4e47-859b-0de73bc504d8&_nwpt=1#scplatformComments

Boy, everythings so wrong in that review. The guy probably hasn't sen a show yet and didn't recognize that there was no other vocals on In My Room than the Boys' and Jeff's

And with all due respect to that last band on Leno as he was signing off, they were so far out of their f*cking league in comparison, they could have been playing in the bassist's mom's basement or something compared to the power of that first verse sung by the original Beach Boys...still not over the power of that first minute or so. Owned it!

Thanks but no thanks for the lecture, I could say more but I'll just say this. Ron: Don't be one of those posters. Don't cause a conflict where there is no conflict. If I or anyone wants to say something about Snow Patrol, we'll say it openly and I'll say it without needing to be called out or lectured for it. There is no problem here, don't look for one.

I'll also say I think Snow Patrol's song "Chasing Cars" is a brilliant and touching piece of music, in my top 20 songs at least from the past ten years, and one which I have taught a few dozen times and enjoy every time I hear it, teach it, and play it. But that has no bearing on how the band came off the other night as Leno was going off the air or how I felt about it. Maybe the fact that the new Snow Patrol song was so "off" in comparison to not only The Beach Boys but also their previous work which I have enjoyed is what triggered that response, in retrospect.

Nice to see Brian on a talk show since he rarely does that these days.  He seemed as comfortable as you can be on those things.  When was the last time he was on one before Fallon?

He's performed on Letterman and Leno several times, but I can't recall him sitting down to chat....

Period.

It's a really strange interview that one for me. It's like every Brian era encapsulated into one "Brian". I see hints of 60's Brian, that 76 Mike Douglas interview with Brian, a touch of Landy era Brian and Brian at his best during the last decade. He really is a fascinating creature our Bri, you never know what you're gonna get!

I know people have mentioned it already, but I wish Brian would watch his weight a little more.  He's really getting big again, and that's probably 90% of the problem with his back.  I know if I get 20 pounds or so overweight, I get to the point where I feel sluggish, it's harder to get up in the morning, I have less energy, etc.... you start eating right and you feel 100% better after you drop a few pounds.

I'm sure his doctors are telling him the same thing though, I'll bet he gets back into fighting shape in the next year or two.

I agree that Brian is not at a healthy weight-- not that he needs to be skinny like it's 1988, but he's pretty big now. I assume he's under a doctor's constant care, though, and hopefully he's not surviving on cake and steaks. Mike is giving Brian a run for his money in the weight dept these days.

He's getting older, too, though. And he's had a belly for awhile now I Think.

I'm sure it's much harder for him to stay in shape, but he looks to be 100 pounds or so overweight to me, he's really been packing it on... and if you're having back trouble that's affecting your quality of life... age or no age the weight has to come down a bit.   It's something he's struggled with his whole life, he'll probably swing back the other way soon enough.

Keep in mind Ron if his back is bad he can't do the exercise he may have done in the past. I guess his running days are over but wasn't he walking everyday? Perhaps when his back gets better he can start again.

But of course there is that catering at each gig and those hotels on the road have some great buffets damn them!  ;D

My brother went to see Brian in San Diego a few years ago and was sitting off towards the side.  He said when Brian left the stage he saw him take a fall in the wings as he left the stage, and surprisingly there didn't seem to be anybody nearby to help him up.

I think he's wearing a back brace under his shirt, which makes him look bigger.  There was a photo from Jazzfest where it was clear that there was something under his shirt besides his belly.

It could be... although, if you look at the high def. footage (the same footage that proves he isn't using autotune) on Jimmy Fallon's show (what this thread is about, I'm still on topic!!!!)... when he's sitting on the couch with Mike you can see the lovely, squishy, round mound under his shirt that only a big belly can provide.

Yeah, it does look like his belly on Fallon, but on this photo it sure looks to me that he's wearing something bulky under his shirt.

It's possible he decided not to wear a back brace on TV. Someone needs to talk to Brian's people and tell them he needs better shoes and maybe a better, more ergonomic chair for the stage. Any volunteers? Oh, wait. They're probably reading this thread. Done.

Someone mentioned on another thread how Brian looks more like Beethoven now, that's certainly true.  I wonder if Beethoven was a little pudgy later in life?  All I've seen are the same few... kind of idolized paintings and sketches of him.

He was a drunk, so I would assume he was at least somewhat bloated. But if you look at his death mask he seemed really gaunt.

I'm glad others brought up the weight issue. We love him no matter what, but yes he's getting way too big again....not sure why. It's also a serious risk for heart attack especially in men, when they let their belly weight go to extremes. I noticed in 2009 he was starting to gain a lot more weight again and it seems to be increasing as we go along. Maybe part of his willing to keep touring is that the powers that be let him enjoy eating what he wishes to..........who knows.

I'm just re-watching the video. Yes, there seems to be something under Brian's shirt besides his belly. When they are sitting on the couch and he's moving during his Presley story there is something clunky that won't move with his body movements (if you understand what I mean )
At least that's how it looks to me

EDIT:

Even more obvious on TWGMTR when Brian's moving
